Made on a Spirit Master machine. I see many people saying mimeograph, but a mimeograph worked on a stencil type system, like silk screening. A Spirit Master worked on an ink transfer system, where the purple ink was coaxed out of wax and transferred onto the paper. Only the Spirit Master had that fantastic smell because of the duplicating fluid composed of methanol and isopropanol alcohol.

If you were running late with your copies, the paper was still infused with the alcohol smell. And, yes, I'm old enough to have used both machines.

If you made a mistake on the Spirit Master, you had to take it out of the typewriter, use a razor blade to scrape off the wrong letter, rip off a corner of a different sheet, place that piece where you scraped the letter off since there was no more wax there, return the whole thing to the typewriter, trying your best to align to the sentence with the missing letter, and then type the correct letter.

That is fascinating as a 33 year old who still prints a ton of paper copies of things in a civil construction office. Thanks for explaining.

That smell was heavenly.

Every single person who worked with Dittos will tell you about that smell.

I remember copying machines being referred to as ‘Foolscap’, but the name Foolscap refers to an even older type of printing press.

Is that what we used to call the “ditto” machine?
