Celiac Disease is not an allergy to gluten. Don't worry, your ignorance is not your fault, and it's more common than you might think. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack its own stomach and intestine lining when a very very very small amount of proteins called gluten are found. In one-off occurrences, these flare-ups can cause myriad symptoms (every Celiac patient is different) for up to two weeks per exposure (not stacking lol). Symptoms can range from painful to demonic.

In the US, where I'm based, Celiac is classified as a disability and is covered by the ADA. I used to scoff at that but after several years prior to diagnosis up to this day, I can tell you with complete honesty that having Celiac in the US is hell. There is cheap wheat flour everywhere due to decades of federal wheat farming subsidies. People like you don't take it seriously because GF is a fad.

I hope you don't take this as a personal attack, because it's not. I used to make light of CD too, ten years ago. It's fucking brutal. I had to grieve my old life, and that process is still ongoing. Now, I try to educate folks who I'm sure are well-meaning like myself those long years ago, because it's still somehow a mystery in my country. All I hope you take from this is that Celiac is closer in severity to an extreme peanut allergy (not the anaphylaxis, but the sensitivity) than it is to the typical day of GI discomfort that I'm sure you're thinking of. Honestly, if you are still reading, I appreciate you already.

There are dogs trained to detect gluten it’s pretty cool

I said this in another comment, but it's more likely they're trained to detect bread or bread crumbs given how tiny and odorless gluten proteins are.

Pretty simple don’t eat anything bread related.

I’m fairly certain you don’t need a dog shitting all over an elementary school to tell you not to eat anything that looks like bread .

Do you guys listen to yourself when you type this stuff?

All it takes is a spec of gluten from a different food item to end up in your food from cross contamination

Pretty sure gluten never killed anybody

An estimated 42,000 children die per year from undiagnosed or unmanaged celiac disease.

Unheard of in the US, we seriously need service dog reform to only blind people

If they only had a service dog………….. to eat all the gluten!

So this cross-contamination will kill you?
You need a secondary dog to be with you 24 seven because you’re a idiot and are unable to navigate the world ?

That's just wrong but the speed in which you replied tells me you're just an automated aggravation troll. I hope there's an outage on your block soon.

Education is an interesting thing, having emotional opinions versus factual responses, lends you to believe that you know what you’re talking about.

I can almost guarantee I'm more educated than you are, generally

And I know I'm more educated than you on this subject since I am someone who has symptomatic Celiac Disease in the US.

You can choose at any moment to stop spewing brainless idiocy, but I understand you probably lack the awareness to be able to stop.

Nothing screams ‘educated’ quite like announcing how educated you are, using your own diagnosis as your credential, and then replacing an actual argument with insults. If you know this subject as well as you claim, demonstrating it should be easy. So far, you’ve demonstrated that you have celiac disease and a very high opinion of yourself. Congratulations on both.

Education is an interesting thing

Isn't that what you're insinuating??

I've laid everything out very clearly in my first several comments on this thread, and you decided to play the troll on each. Excoriating me for giving you my credentials is insanity on your part. I will join the countless humans who have not nor will ever congratulate you for anything.

Bread ain’t the only thing with gluten. You don’t need a dog but it’s definitely not just as simple as not eating bread. Anything with rye, barley, oats, wheat, etc is a no. This can include sausages, other meats, soups, all baked goods based on wheat, bread, curries, seasonings, sauces, potato chips, a lot of candies (soft or hard), some drinks, certain thickeners, some sweeteners, make up products like lipsticks that go on or around the mouth, lip balm. Even stuff that’s been made/processed on the same lines like nuts, chocolate, sprinkles even, canned fruit etc

Wrong again! Gluten is a protein found in many grains, including but not limited to: wheat, rye, barley, farro. It's also found in things grown on bread or other gluten-containing ingredients, such as natural flavors or yeast extract... Those last two are in a fuck ton of processed foods in the US.

To expand on another user's comment, when dining out Celiac patients can get sick when their meal was prepped on a cutting board that has been used for bread (ever, turns out cutting grooves in something is a great home for sticky, tiny gluten proteins), or if GF pasta is cooked in the same water normal pasta is.

It’s called Darwinism for a reason.
