I live in a place where these don’t get used. We just get parking tickets. People that are idiots about parking accrue alot of tickets. When it’s time to renew your license plate, buy a car, etc., those tickets will come back to bite you in the ass. It’s pretty effective. I still see some assholes, but not many.

What do you mean? They don't get a license plate? Or they only have to pay once they get their plate? In my country when you don't pay it directly when receiving the ticket, they will find just file a lawsuite against the car owner and then you also have to pay that additionally to the fee you would have in the first place.

But in the end, if you pay, its just an expensive parking ticket, so rich people can be assholes and still park wherever they aren't towed...

Basically there are late payment fees, but they don’t force collection on them until you go to renew your car license plate.

Most places in the US at least. They can also tow a car that has them as well some places.

Bold of you to assume these type of people renew their car plates.

Yep. Can't get a plate/plate sticker until you pay your past due tickets. Getting caught driving with expired/no tags is a much bigger fine and may lose you your license for a period of time.

I wonder how theyre going to deal with this in the states that are making sticker obsolete...

You still have to pay registration, so your plate just gets run (which they do even if you appear to have a current sticker) and it'll return "unregistered". With cameras it's all automated.

In New York City, there’s a lot of cars that aren’t registered in New York, and the drivers aren’t licensed in New York. How does your system address them?

Based on the maple leaf pfp I’ll assume that commenter is also from Canada, and up here we aren’t a fractured country who get away with not following other provinces (states) laws. 50+ vastly different marbles in a jar and the guy holding the jar doesn’t have control of any of the marbles.

Bold of you to assume that jar hasn't slipped thru his cheeto greased chode fingers and shattered across the floor already.

You literally have provinces trying to secede lmao, not fractured at all.

But to answer the question, no matter where they are registered we have this nifty program called the dmv, so they still wouldn’t get a license with unpaid tickets

The operative word is "trying". With american help I should add. The US is interfering in our democracy and our sovereignty.

Our laws (the criminal code and the motor vehicle safety act) still apply coast to coast. We dont have a patchwork system of 50 different agencies doing the same law enforcement.

The whole point was the other Canuck said America is fractured but with or without Canadian help no state wants to be part of you guys

And I think you’re confused but it’s ok, our laws still apply coast to coast. The “patchwork” states you speak of are all still American. Of which your entire countries population could fit in a number of…..

No one actually wants Canada part of America but it would just be another state

Also, to address the comment you’re replying to. The ones that want to separate are in the minority. Quebec tried it a few times and lost miserably each time. Currently, it’s only about 30% that want to, and that’s not enough to make it happen. Even with the new PQ government.

"lost miserably each time" is absolutely false.

Last time it happened (1995), 49.42% voted yes.

I left the summer of ‘94. Perhaps not lost miserably, but certainly didn’t win.

Some tickets will interchange between states. Also, on speeding tickets, NY state will asses a "driver responsibility fee", i.e. an extra fine that you have to pay every year for a few years. Even if you're from out of state.

To make things even more annoying- NY asses different tolls on the same bridges based on residency and if you have an EZ-Pass transponder.

Did I mention their non-compliant traffic signs?

They get away with this shit because they're NY State.

I am surprised the US can't handle that. Here in Europe I can get a speeding ticket in Sweden or a parking violation in the Netherlands and a non access except for authorized vehicles ticket in Italy and I would simply receive mail at my home address in Germany for that. If I don't pay in time all of those countries will rack up more fines/fees and collect them or even take you to court for them in Germany.

Probably the same way states handle it between each other. A parking ticket probably won't prevent an out of state person from doing business with their local DMV. But something like a traffic violation they will definitely see that and refuse to do business with that person until they clear it up with the other state first. With a parking ticket though they might just send it to collections or have your vehicle towed or booted if it returns to their jurisdiction.

People are just taking their plates off in my neighborhood. The cars cost too much for sanitation to take if they look abandoned and no one is towing them. People treat the neighborhood like shit and then also complain when anything nice happens as gentrification. It’s like people want to live in an underground society where they only like the people who look like them. It’s nuts. I half get it since the US has treated so many minorities poorly. Yet it also feels like when change is coming that it’s viewed poorly. I wish people could work together.

Lots of unregistered people too....

This is NYC - the city that may have the wealthiest people in the world - where I live wealthy people treat parking tickets like paying for preferred parking - doing this inconveniences them into not doing it again

The consequences come too late to stop idiots
