This guy shot and killed his entire family, and I believe he's actually completely insane. It was on one of those modern-day crime shows. One of the rare cases where I thought, "Yep, this guy is completely mentally gone."
If you watched the whole episode, he's not planning anything in the moment he kicks the wall. He's arguing with "something." Not excusing his actions, but of all the crime documentaries I've seen, this is one of the only suspects who really seems to have lost all comprehension. Check it out.
It's fucked. I just rewatched it, and it's really bizarre. He's in and out in waves of lucidity, and I'll even admit I was questioning my original position. I still believe he's insane, but the way he's answering so bluntly and then immediately asking about their wounds healing and how many dead there are is strange. IF he manipulated the whole thing, then he's an evil genius, but I don't think that's the logical belief. He's nuts.
You can hear him talking about seismic waves, Big Ben; he’s talking about a mass casualty event happening, and then, he can’t even appreciate the factual scenario at that point because he also asked Detective Carole, how many people died? He can’t even appreciate that his family, you know, was dead because he’s asking about it. He doesn’t seem to understand what’s going on,” said Attorney Grace Kienzle.
He wasn't checking at first though. He punched the wall from what looks like frustration while he's arguing with "someone" (no one is in the room with him), then appears to realize it's hollow.
Not excusing his actions as he killed his innocent family so he's going to be put away for life either way. But if you have the context of watching the entire thing and then see his reaction once he kicks the wall, it's one of surprise. Up until then, he was in an argument with whatever occupies his mind. Just because you can conceptualize leaving an enclosed space doesn't mean anything. Animals realize things like this too.
"Completely gone" isn't the legal bar for insanity. Roughly speaking, it's the inability to distinguish right from wrong and/or what is real and what isn't.
