If that’s the full story that’s pretty dumb of him. Everyone knows the first production isn’t that lucrative. Sequels (or renewals in TV) are always where the original cast and crew can leverage more money. Imagine if RDJ stopped at Iron Man 1, and just quit out of spite because he made less than Terence Howard. The author here could’ve surely put a higher price tag on the sequel equal to the profits he missed out on, plus the correct backend rights on the sequel itself and would’ve made it right.

Forrest gump made 10x it's budget back. it wasn't a misunderstanding, it's a long running scam in hollywood.

I understand. And that’s the end of the story whey they’re not looking for a new contract for a sequel or follow-up. Given they approached him, he had leverage to have a high ask that would make it right. Maybe he did make the ask, and they turned him down, who knows, but if the story is just that he declined full-stop because he didn’t make enough on the first film then that was a dumb move.

So the reason we have all the terrible sequels we do is so the author can be paid, and all we sacrifice is any goodwill the audience had for the first movie?

Funny you mentioned Terrence Howard because if I remember correctly, that's exactly what happened with him, so he got replaced by Don Cheadle.
