It’s actually not! He went through a for-profit body broker, which is how they ended up in this situation at all.

The body donation program that’s specifically sanctioned by the government… doesn’t and can’t work with the US government as a client. The Anatomical Gift Association can only work with academic (as we generally think of that term) end clients, and the military and its contractors (again, as we commonly think of that term without going down the insane rabbit hole that reveals almost everybody is somehow a military contractor) do not qualify.

No, if you want to, you definitely can. Just make sure it’s either through Anatomical Gift or directly to the university you want to be a cadaver for.

The amount of research-research (as in, generating breakthroughs) that can be done with a person who is already dead is phenomenally limited. Especially medically. What there is, is usually as the very last step of a research study you would enroll in as a living person. These are happening all the time, and usually are a research and/or teaching hospital working in conjunction with a foundation devoted to a disease the study is examining. It’s really unusual for these studies to need specimen that can be obtained through the normal post-mortem donation path, so, as mentioned, people usually enroll as living patients.
