Hey, I gave birth to two babies the natural way, needed stitches both times, and all they gave me at the hospital was acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Not saying there’s never a need for stronger meds, but a lot can be accomplished with over the counter painkillers and strong will.

You'll know when you need them irl, can't do much without them in some certain situations, emergent or otherwise (general anesthesia, whatever).

I serve up the drugs as an emergency/critical care nurse. If I roll up in my helicopter and you're wedged in a wrecked car, I'll give you fentanyl ketamine versed whatever and its fine.

Long term requires a regimented program to transition off them if at all possible, imo.

Problem is docs under prescribe them now, but they’ll still give you enough to get hooked and then just do nothing to help after. You can have a particularly grueling shoulder surgery and maybe the pain is truly brutal, but they give you 10 low dose pills and maybe after 2-3, someone who is going to get dependent or addicted is already there. Then they can’t get more and start scouring the streets or friends, and docs don’t do anything to monitor this or wean them off. Frankly it’s almost more harmful. Either don’t prescribe them at all, or enter a full on program to monitor and adjust and keep a close eye on people.

That being said 99% of people don’t get addicted, and it is still a choice early on to use and keep using and seek more.

Tbh there’s a huge problem in this country with complete inability to tolerate any pain or inconvenience. I think doctors definitely under prescribe opioids nowadays and that’s even more dangerous, but there’s also a ton of people who can’t live with discomfort for a few days, it’s like they think they should never have any pain at all in life. Inability to tolerate mental illness and physical pain are the biggest issues for drug abuse. People just can’t cope anymore
