It’s all about familiarity. You keep stage names because that’s what the marquee says, that’s what CDs say. Yes you can choose to change it and I’ll agree the people with young in the name not changing it is a little goofy too. But it’s better than a nickname you have no tie to. No one is putting ā€œThe Boyā€ on a CD. It has zero weight but he chooses to use it. Why do you think Lady Gaga still goes by that even tho at this point she could go by her real name and still do well? Because the name has weight at this point. That’s what stage names do.

Drake doesn’t put ā€œthe boyā€ on a CD either, he just refers to himself as ā€œthe boyā€. Also it has nothing to do with familiarity especially for the artists I’ve mentioned. The is no other lil flip, there is no other young dro or dolph, they all could’ve dropped the young… in the streets a nigga would say aye bro play some dolph or you fuck with that new dro? If a DJ was welcoming young buck to a stage not one fan would be confused if he just said buck… like I said your argument doesn’t hold weight… but let’s take it further, I’m sure you’ve heard in real life or even on TV someone call their friends my boys, I’m from Detroit and we call each other my baby… I see grown men all the time say ā€œ cmon my baby won’t you let yo boy hold some real quick I got some shit in the Floā€ another case of grown men calling themselves ā€œboyā€ Drake just uses it as a moniker and says ā€œthe boyā€ still has nothing to do with age… yall can pretend like Drake is weird for doing it but if yiu a hood nigga or at least been imbedded in this hip hop shit then you know this ain’t nothing new…

Here’s why. My favorite artist is Ye. Now watch this ā€œYe has done some incredibly immature and embarrassing things, especially over the last 3 years. Being nearly 50 and writing lyrics like ā€˜one in the pink one in the stink’ shows a level of immaturity you would think he would have grown out of as a grown man and a dadā€

See how I can be honest about the rappers I like when they’re being immature or not acting their age? It’s because I’m not about to ride or die for another man to the point I’m on reddit defending him like his woman would.

Go listen to drake that’s cool. I like some Drake songs. But if you can’t see that a 40 year old grown man calling himself the boy is corny as fuck then you’re dick riding plain and simple.

Again I’ll say Ye is my favorite artist. But I’m not about to be out here defending his honor like it matters. Don’t like Ye? Think he’s immature? Think he’s a POS? Great you’re prolly right. Still not about to defend his honor.

Ok, so what’s the difference between defending his honor and continually hating on someone? Just as much as I defended Drake during this argument you’ve attacked… it’s not different from when the entire east coast of fans didn’t fuck with the west coast and vice versa… have you never been to a barbershop? Niggas will argue for hours about LeBron or Kobe or Iverson… how old were you when Jay and nas had their beef? The lunch room had crazy arguments during that time… I’m saying that to say everyone defends their favorite artist or ball player or whatever… it’s not new

And Ye’s controversial opinions and actions are widely different from calling yourself ā€œthe boyā€ as a moniker when you’re a rapper. If you think it’s corny cool, but you’re literally just hating… and I know one of two things… either you’re not a true hip hop fan or you at very least not a hood nigga bc that shit is common depending on where you’re from.

The only thing I attacked drake for was being a corny ass 40 year old calling him self the boy. Drake is one of the most successful artists of all time. He’s got the ability to make a good album at any point. The only knock on Drake musically is that he phones it in. The 3 piece album he dropped this year isn’t bad but it’s also by far not his best work and that’s been the story of Drake for a while. He’s the super gifted guy who doesn’t have to study to pass the test but he’s not getting As either. And he’s good with that because decent still makes him 20 million dollars an album.

To the point of ye. Notice I didn’t mention the controversy? I said he’s been doing immature things and pointed to immature lyrics. Because that is very comparable. ā€œReach for the pop corn oops that’s my cockā€ is middle school shit. Calling your self the boy is middle school shit.

No one is talking about some barber shop who’s better shit but you. All I said is dude can be a corn ball sometimes and the boy is an example and you just couldn’t let that go. I got nothing better to do today so I’ll just engage but genuinely? defending drakes nickname is a weird hill to die on my guy.

But do you.

I brought up barber shop shit bc you mention arguing for someone… and I’m showing you it’s not a weird thing at all bc that’s the type of shit we’ve always done in this culture… and I’m still defending him calling himself the boy bc it’s part of the culture hence why I brought up conversations we have as a someone from Detroit… I’m starting to understand the disconnect though, you don’t understand calling yourself ā€œthe boyā€ (even as a 40 year old man) is kinda like a flex in the hood… like a nigga would say ā€œyou already know she gone come fuck with the boy, these hoes stay fuckin wit meā€ā€¦ I think you don’t be around older hood niggas to even know how regular that shit is…

I’ll give you that it maybe a little less corny for him. Given what you just said. But you as a grown man calling him ā€œthe boyā€ does not get less corny. I’m sorry.
