OK, that honestly makes it worse. Not part of the Security job description. Wallen is still a dick though. You’re not wrong Wallen, you’re just an asshole”
No he was still wrong. You don’t get to throw a fit and break someone’s shit because they aren’t doing their job correctly. Imagine if someone was allowed to smash a McDonalds employees phone because they were on it on the job?
Did you miss the part where I said he was a dick and an asshole? He wasn’t wrong in that the security guard should not have been doing what they were doing. But he was an asshole for how he handled it.
As someone who is actually in professional security, I would absolutely not be doing this. First of all, it isn't my job and could be a fireable offense now that this person has been seen fucking around like this. Secondly, I want no part of being responsible for someone else's property.
That's a liability to me personally, and again to the job who might get held responsible for 'missing or damaged' items because I decided to putz around instead of paying fucking attention to a situation that go weird at any moment.
Hmm, good point. It’s kinda partially on him for the crowd member losing their phone now. Since he took it in the first place. Huge liability issue. Didn’t think about that.
Well thanks. And hey, I will gladly grant that this is somewhat venue dependent. If I am working a wedding and some group wanted me to take a photo for them, not a problem. But in front of a gaggle of tipsy-to-drunk yodeling rednecks you gotta stay focused and sharp, cuz something can pop off at any moment, realistically. Concerts are very fluid, and there's a shit ton of people and possibilities.
I don't know their SOP or anything so maybe this isn't the end of the world and they have plenty of overlap. From my experience though if you're on watch, you're on watch. If you need a break (or to do anything that isn't your job) you get relief first.
Makes sense. I’ve never been to a concert, so I was going off what I’ve been told and seen online. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen security goof off or been slightly lackadaisical. So, I assumed it was a group effort to just maintain order and the safety come in during the check-in process before even entering the concert venue (metal detectors and such). I stand corrected
but maybe that security person should have put the phone down once the artist is in your area?
Are you kidding me? How can anyone think it's acceptable for the security guard to even pull out his phone? Dude has a job to do and he's ignoring it to get special access video? Wallen should have stopped the concert to have that man escorted out of the building.
There was a little bit of hyperbole there, but the security guard's actions are flat out unacceptable. What's the appropriate reaction? Because it sure as hell isn't doing nothing.
lol the cope is ridiculous here. “What’s the appropriate reaction?” To let someone know that there is an employee not performing their job? Have you actually ever been to a concert? After the song say something to a hand or say it over the mic. We’ve seen artist do this thing countless times. What 100% is unacceptable is to forcibly take a phone away from someone and yeet into the crowd. Damaging property and potentially hitting someone is ridiculous behavior for an adult. Shows lack of emotional regulation and decision making skills.
I didn't have a question about anything else you said. Only the part that I had a question about. What response should I have given to the part that I understood and didn't have a question about?
Allow me to rephrase my previous comment in an attempt to meet your requirements. Pretend tis is what I said instead.
"Fair, but did you have to say any of this? Did anyone advocate for this?"
Damaging property and potentially hitting someone is ridiculous behavior for an adult. Shows lack of emotional regulation and decision making skills.
No, I said what should have been done and that didn't involve destroying anyone's property, did it? Someone said that was an overreaction, so I asked if they had a reaction that wasn't doing nothing.
There's no way that you can try to twist my question into trying to excuse Wallen's behavior.
We get the society that we allow. If we allow security guards to be a joke because we think their job is a joke, then that will become a self-fulfilling prophecy and their response to emergencies will be joke-like. They're the ones pushing for that society. And if that's the society that they want, I hope they get a taste of those consequences.
