You're supposed to just beat the bosses first try.

Unironically 😭

I never noticed because I beat the game without dying

You can die in that?

74

u/Kekkonen_Kakkonen Dec 11 '23

I never played it. Is it like ds2?

79

u/PageOthePaige Horny for Bed of Chaos Dec 11 '23

Yeah, a lot like ds2, you have infinite healing, bosses aren't much of a threat, and most stuff is balanced around you having half your max health and at a lower level than you can fairly easily teach. It's genuinely kneecapping its own difficulty a fair bit.

21

u/thelongestunderscore Dec 12 '23

Flamelurker kicked my ass like 10 times. I still have no idea how you supposed to dodge his claw strkes.

u/No_Name275 Dec 11 '23

god screw this dam system i was aiming for the plat and i had to do multiple ng+ just for the world and character tendency events beacuse i didn't know pvp affect character tendency so i had to do multiple ng+ just to get my both character and world tendency to shift to white despite the game being the shortest compared to other souls games the new game plus difficulty can be really fcked up and unforgiving compared to other souls game and this when i realized how terrible some boss runs can be in this game this vid is mostly just meme like the average ds2 boss runs but pretty sure some people can still realate to it

47

u/Scroteet Dec 11 '23

Lol. On ng++ the lunge attack those wimpy zombies on the swamp level do will one shot you even if your shield’s up. Basically every 90 seconds you have to reapply the damage reducing spell or you’ll get dropped by an out of sight butt fucker in the shanty town

21

u/No_Name275 Dec 11 '23

i hated how random those stupid lung attack are seriously in term of difficulty this game feels the hardest when it comes to the plat or just ng+ difficultly and yes i know it's probably skill issue

10

u/WestKenshiTradingCo Boykisser (DS2 fan) Dec 11 '23

48

u/GenericVicodin Dec 11 '23 edited Dec 12 '23

Because it was the first of its kind and Miyazaki has refined the formula with each subsequent entry.

I wish the Remaster had made some QoL changes instead of just giving it gorgeous graphics and a couple new armor sets.

40

u/I_h8_DeathStranding Dec 11 '23

Then ppl would shit on it for not being true to the "original spirit"

28

u/GoldenSpermShower Dec 11 '23

People already shit on the remaster for the aesthetics/music not being "true to the original spirit"

3

u/Real_Mokola Dec 12 '23

And that it's not as hard as the original was, what the fuck ever that means..

10

u/PoIIux Dec 12 '23

It means that with controls becoming better, the game turned out to actually be quite easy. DS2 would be the easiest game FS ever made (yes, even easier than Sekiro) if they let us have DS3 controls. The difficulty was completely artificial in that the most base part of the game, character movement, was shit.

4

u/UnlegitUsername Dec 12 '23

Maiden Astraea OST change was rough

4

u/Hallowbrand Dec 12 '23

Wild cause the new theme was a banger, and I hated most or the new arrangements.

3

u/UnlegitUsername Dec 13 '23

It’s a banger out of context, in my opinion the remake has consistently better produced songs but it does feel as though they were trying to capitalise on Kitamura’s work in DS3. The OST doesn’t have its own identity in DeS 2020 and I think Maiden Astraea’s new theme doesn’t use the motif enough or convey the correct feelings in the fight.

However, each to their own and I do like it as a piece of music.

4

u/PoIIux Dec 12 '23

That's why no one should ever listen to DS2 and DS fans

12

u/Hushed_Horace Siegmeyer of Catarina enjoyer Dec 11 '23

Demons souls has the second best level design in the series tied with bloodborne and only loses to dark souls 1.

1

u/ubric professional greirat prolapser Dec 11 '23

The existence of tower of Latria disproves this statement

15

u/Hushed_Horace Siegmeyer of Catarina enjoyer Dec 11 '23

Tower of Latria is easily the second best level in Demon’s Souls. Upper Latria is also great. It only loses out to 1-1 and 1-3.

13

u/oblmov Don’t give up, skeleton Dec 11 '23

Why would you complain about tower of latria of all levels. that might be the best part of the game. You really played through the swamp and thought ā€œat least it isnt tower of latriaā€???

6

u/ubric professional greirat prolapser Dec 11 '23

The swamp was unironically leagues better than the tower with squid men who can stunlock one shot me where every corridor looks the exact same. Shit was annoying as fuck, especially on higher ng cycles

1

u/oblmov Don’t give up, skeleton Dec 11 '23

But the atmosphere

6

u/ubric professional greirat prolapser Dec 11 '23

The atmosphere dosent matter if the gameplay is ass

0

u/artoriasisthemc Dec 12 '23

17

u/SupplyChainMismanage Dec 11 '23

Had an argument with my brother in law about this. I said ā€œdemon souls is alright, just way too many fights in areas you can fall.ā€ Dude proceeded to do the whole get gud thing like jesus christ bro

11

u/WeirdestOfWeirdos Dec 11 '23

just way too many fights in areas you can fall

Almost as if the game didn't care nearly as much about the combat system as just putting you in uncomfortable, tense situations mostly given by the level design? I find it far more interesting to negotiate the unwieldy bridges and roofs of 5-1 (or Blighttown/Tomb of the Giants, for that matter), or the descent in 4-2, or the labyrinthian structure of 3-1, or whatever the fuck 2-2 is, or the tense crawl through the bridge in 1-2, and so on, than it is to grind any traditional boss fight. While there are certainly memorable levels in the other games, particularly DS1, DS2 and even Elden Ring, this kind of scenario is not the core focus of those games (tragically so in the case of Elden Ring, which is, for me, just SO CLOSE to having that same kind of charm in its legacy Dungeons, my favorites being Haligtree and the Subterranean Shunning Grounds).

12

u/SupplyChainMismanage Dec 11 '23

I honestly do not know what you are trying to say here haha

16

u/PageOthePaige Horny for Bed of Chaos Dec 11 '23

They like falling.

More charitably, they like when the areas provide a threat via hazards and shaky designs, rather than being carpeted runways to a boss fight.

I think the best souls feeling is a balanced difficulty between areas and bosses, so I get where they're coming from, but gravity isn't a fun enemy when the platforming is souls jank. I think most of ds1, vanilla DS2, and a certain game mods won't let me mention do this pretty well, whereas Demon's souls goes a little too unfun on areas and easy on bosses, and DS3, Sekiro, and Elden Ring go a little too easy on routes.

5

u/SupplyChainMismanage Dec 11 '23

Thank for the explanation I know my brain is burnt from work but their comment felt like conflicting emotions. Also agree on your third paragraph.

Wait game mods are banned from being said here?

13

u/seriouslyuncouth_ Demon Is Souls Dec 11 '23

Having a level you actually have to think about when you play is a terrible design choice

1

u/Derpikae Dec 12 '23

You telling me the series isn't actually one elaborate boss rush?

4

u/Ignis_Imperia Dec 11 '23

It's because it's easy so most people don't notice

3

u/SourGrapeMan Dec 11 '23

other than boss runbacks and healing grass (both of which aren't even objectively bad) what design choices would you consider terrible?

11

u/ubric professional greirat prolapser Dec 11 '23

The bosses themselves are generally kinda shit and gimmicky and the combat is super barebones and kinda boring

20

u/oblmov Don’t give up, skeleton Dec 11 '23

The combat was interesting if u played it on release. it only seems boring now because Fromsoft has made 6 other game combat systems building on it

3

u/ubric professional greirat prolapser Dec 11 '23

Fair enough. I got into the series with ds1 on the ps3 so I was used to the clunkniess , but it just felt kinda mechanichally boring

3

u/nervousmelon Aldrich, Devourer of Bussy Dec 12 '23

The bosses are fine. It's easy with hindsight and bosses like Gael or isshin existing to say demons souls bosses are bad but they're just not.

In terms of being called bosses they're perfectly fine compared to other games.

-7

u/SourGrapeMan Dec 11 '23 edited Dec 11 '23

gimmick bosses are great and if you disagree you are a coward

2

u/SuperD00perGuyd00d Darkmoon class Dec 11 '23

Game's bosses are more of a "what would you do to survive" scenario that Miyazaki was more or less aiming for here in Demon's Souls. That's why it's so much fun 🤌Also the pvp was fun

But I get why people dislike it. Weird world tendency shit, bosses are mid and pvp is basically dead across all platforms

5

u/Jubarra10 Dec 11 '23

I too like mashing the swing button against a specific spot on a boss's body without doing any damage 100 times so I caj get 3 attacks that do barely anything to his health.

3

u/Razhork Dec 11 '23

demon dong fans when you can only damage the boss by the big obvious gushing wound while pressing b to dodge it's singular attack which takes 20 business days to land: 🤯🤯🤯🤯

miyazaki peaked at adjudicator, why even try anymore

8

u/Veris01 Dec 11 '23

World tendency

9

u/SourGrapeMan Dec 11 '23

wrong that's cool as fuck. I wish modern fromsoft had the balls to add shit like that into their newer games.

10

u/oblmov Don’t give up, skeleton Dec 11 '23

Its an interesting idea but i dont think it worked well. If youre good at the game it gets even easier which makes it boring, and if youre bad at the game it gets harder rather than helping you learn

Knowing the game gets harder when u die does help with the dark oppressive atmosphere that demons souls was really good at creating. but World Tendency was so obscure on release that i bet most players didnt even realize that was happening

1

u/SourGrapeMan Dec 12 '23

are you stupid? do you really think that just because you don't like them it makes them objectively bad? The fact that there are loads of people who'd disagree already proves you wrong

0

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '23

Thats not how this works lil bro People can have many reasons to like an objectively bad thing, liling it doesnt make it subjective, its still dogshit game design and theyve moved on from that for a good reason

72

I know your ass didn’t die to adjudicator.

16

u/Jubarra10 Dec 11 '23

Adjudicator is in no way obvious for how to defeat him outside of hitting the bird. Being a melee build against him was a pain

55

u/SirWillyworth Dec 11 '23

Me when incredibly slow boss with attacks so telegraphed you can walk around them exists:

5

u/rhoparkour Dec 12 '23

LMAO brother what the hell. That boss can't even kill you if you walk somewhat to the side sometimes, worst you stalemate because you didn't figure out the obvious weak spots.

30

u/Sufficient-Turn-7799 Dec 11 '23

Fromsoft adding checkpoints and bonfires so close to the bosses in their later games feels like an apology for all of the horrendous run backs of Demon Souls.

Going from Sekiro, Elden Ring and Dark Souls 3 to Demon Souls was one hell of an adjustment period for me, thank christ the bosses were easy and gimmicky, imagine having to deal with a run back as bad as World 4-2, but with a boss equal in diffuclty to Malenia and Midir, I'd go hollow after the first death.

13

u/GenericVicodin Dec 11 '23

Sekiro is a whole other ballgame because of Wolf’s mobility.

10

u/artoriasisthemc Dec 12 '23

the runbacks are even fun, like genichiro you use the hookshot to glide all over the place, if you get it down is like flying all over the castle

4

u/FXRGRXD Dec 12 '23

what do you mean genichiro? you only step out the window and go up, why are you flying all over the castle to genichiro

7

30

u/SupplyChainMismanage Dec 11 '23

Yeah who slams the left stick left and right super fast while moving?! Skill issue and totally not a joke post /s

82

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

Honestly thank god demon souls is comprised of gimmick bosses and bosses that are about as complex as an ER mini boss if not easier, because I would kill myself if I ever had to do a boss run back in demon souls

45

u/SourGrapeMan Dec 11 '23

that's why the bosses are easy lol, because of the runback. they're capstones to levels

25

u/WeirdestOfWeirdos Dec 11 '23

Which makes it all the more hilarious that the three hardest bosses in the entire game also have some of, if not THE worst runbacks (Flamelurker's broken-ass "platforming" section or the alternative 5+ minutes of tunnel crawling, Maneaters' staircase with the red Mindflayer of death and... Allant with the claustrophobic-ass tower, two- or three- shotting enemies, insta-kill dragon that takes some 10 minutes to kill by shooting arrows and 30 second elevator ride, which they had to make a shortcut for in the remaster).

Not like there aren't some other terrible ones too (Old Hero, Leechmonger, Tower Knight and Fool's Idol all come to mind).

Still my favorite FromSoft game by far

8

u/ZeldHeld CHAMPION OF NIGHTGLOW Dec 12 '23

Flamelurker’s runback is like thirty seconds of running and four rolls, is it really that bad? I never noticed.

2

u/artoriasisthemc Dec 12 '23

towernight is god-awful. you have to time your run to the stupid dragon and go through that tunnel with the dogs. Then get back in the boss arena and kill the 6 archers and then you can fight the boss. like come on, who design that crap

9

Except that these bosses have gimmicks that take repeated attempts to learn how to work against.

28

u/Adventurous_Cup_5970 Dec 11 '23

I've literally never died to the adjudicator so i wouldnt know how bad that runback is

I would however say, old fromsoft fans are way too soft on their games. In ds1 or des, if theres a bad runback, the fans are like "this is good, we love this" but in ds2, or some of the later games have a bad runback, its hell and needs to be gotten rid of

8

u/shadeslayer141 Dec 11 '23

no way my man.
One of the most hated boss runbacks has got to be the Bed of Chaos runback in Izalith.

8

u/Adventurous_Cup_5970 Dec 11 '23

Dude i've heard ds1, demons souls and bloodborne fans defend runbacks like old king allant, gravelord nito, or laurence, when they are all awful

Its only in 2016 when they started to be nicer with runbacks.

Bed of chaos isn't even close to one of the worst runbacks if you get the secret bonfire

1

u/artoriasisthemc Dec 12 '23

the Laurence runback is not bad at all, its just like 4 full sprints and you don't have to kill anything. Allant is completely different, thats the worst runeback in the series by far

1

u/Adventurous_Cup_5970 Dec 12 '23

Laurence's runback is cancer. Its just like allants runback, unnecesarily annoying. You have to wait 20 seconds for the door to open every time, while being attacked by other enemies, and even go through like a fucking jigsaw movie of traps and chainsaw dogs and dudes with guns.

All that for a boss whos just as cancer, its not even worth doing

At least i've never died to allant, and his runback is devoid of enemies besides an easy to avoid dragon. Its just a patience game

also anyone who has played all the games would know blue smleter demon and the twin tigers have BY FAR the worst runbacks and its not even a competition. Twin tigers runback can take 5+ minutes in a zone where you can't see, and the blue smelter demon runback has three rooms full of traps and enemies, that are timed so they close off if you don't make it in time and get stuck, AND mages who make you fat roll and move slower

8

u/Anonimous_dude Great bows are Great indeed šŸ¹ Dec 11 '23

Fun fact: if you decide to ignore the enemies in the area, each of these runs cost you exactly 2-3 pieces of full moon grass, or 4-5 of late moon grass, or 8-10 of half moon grass or an obscene amount of crescent moon grass.
You will never use new and dark moon grass except with bosses or the swamp of 5-2.
This game is horrible for inventory management

Yeah, you could roll off a certain ledge to get a much faster route to the boss.

u/RESEV5 Ludwig's Holy Sword nišŸ…±šŸ…±a Dec 11 '23

There is an easier way to reach the boss lol

Imagine dying to a Demon's Souls boss that isn't Flamelurker

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

its the punishment for dying bro restarting the boss battle isnt enough bro death has more meaning bro its part of the difficulty bro its just one minute bro you can use it to plan and adapt bro

1

u/Creamstar Dec 14 '23

1

u/CreativePreference73 Mar 02 '25

The run back from Adjudicator to Old Hero nearly broke me and my sanity.

1

u/irus1024 Dec 11 '23

Don't give up, skeleton

1

u/jayboyguy Dec 11 '23

Yeah if there’s one thing that’s aged poorly, it’s the fact that you only get checkpoints for beating bosses in Demon’s Souls

1

u/Mental_Pie4509 Naked Fuck with a Stick Dec 11 '23

Take the shortcut then. Pffffff amateur

1

u/AMetalWorld Dec 11 '23

OP when his controller gets stick drift in 0.2 seconds: 😨🤯

1

u/SuperD00perGuyd00d Darkmoon class Dec 11 '23

you didnt even reach the boss fog yet, also you missed the ramp that skips the entire level

1

u/gorehistorian69 Dec 11 '23

i think ds1 has the longest boss runs i cant imagine how many hours ive racked up watching my stamina meter regen over the souls series

1

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '23

Shortcut fixed in remake?

1

u/Skramron Dec 11 '23

The boss run to old hero right after is WAY worse especially on pbwt

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '23

Just kill em, dur

1

u/ZeldHeld CHAMPION OF NIGHTGLOW Dec 12 '23

Honestly the worst runback in DeS is Tower Knight or Allant, the combination of the dragons mixed with constant attacks from the enemies makes it annoying as hell

1

u/Top_Collar7826 Dec 12 '23

Its cause the boss is so easy they have to give you a little challenge

1

u/DrMeds Dec 12 '23

God this stage with all black world tendency gave me nightmares

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '23

Souls players when they fail to comprehend the fact that you can defeat enemies on a boss run

Imagine dying to the Adjudicator

1

u/rhoparkour Dec 12 '23

I really hate that this wasn't even a boss run, not a single shortcut unlocked.

1

u/xantcatchme Dec 12 '23

Narrator voice "that was not, in fact, the 'average' boss run in demon souls."

1

u/BodManFord Darkmoon class Dec 12 '23

Didn’t use the cheese shortcut I see

1

u/Xboxusername Dec 12 '23

You’re not intended to die on a boss lmfao

1

u/Bacsoss12 Dec 12 '23

Ngl you deserve it if you managed to die to Adjudicator šŸ’€

It’s honestly bugging me because I swear I’ve heard it before. I just can’t remember it though perhaps u/No_Name275 will be a kind soul to us

1

u/ozziezombie Dec 12 '23

I hate it that people complain about "boss runs" when playing like this. Aren't you playing the game in order to, y'know, play the game? Not skip it?

Also, git gud

1

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '23

I love souls games and all but damn man I why make me run through a battlefield just to fight a boss that’s even more harder then die and run through it all againšŸ’€

1

u/Another_Saint Pontiff's Fuckboy Dec 12 '23

the best part is that they're using a non intended skip so it's normally longer

1

u/envylv Dec 13 '23

This is the only souls games I dropped just because of its boss runs

1

u/emadel Dec 17 '23

My closest first souls like game was Code Vein. Any recommendations for the next soul game? I'm looking for one with a good weapon upgrade system and enough monsters to grind xp before taking on the boss. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried killing the enemies? Hope this helps!
