Advertisement I'm building a springtail resource site for the community – would love your feedback

When I first set up a bioactive terrarium, springtails were supposed to be background noise. Just the tiny white specks that cleaned up after the “real” stars. But once I noticed them, I couldn’t stop noticing. They weren’t just a cleanup crew, they were their own main characters! That spark of curiosity snowballed into its own hobby, and eventually into a project that now fills many of my evenings: Mesofauna.com

Mesofauna.com is a passion project, built slowly as I’ve been teaching myself web design. It’s not perfect yet (there are still a few “bugs” crawling around the site), but it’s alive and growing. And here’s where you come in.

The vision is simple:

A place for species profiles, care guides, and educational posts that are easy to read but scientifically grounded.

A site that teachers and students can use just as much as hobbyists and researchers. (I’m a biologist, my wife is a teacher, so education runs deep here.)

A collaborative space where the community itself helps document and share this hidden world.

But this cannot happen without you. We need images. We need stories. We need the fingerprints of the hobbyists who are already out there peering into cultures and watching springtails leap across the soil. If you keep springtails, you can help shape the profiles and guides that others will learn from. Share your photos, your notes, your observations. Everything will be fully credited and linked back to you.

I'm are also looking for guest authors. If you’re doing any kind of citizen science, fieldwork, or just have a story to tell about springtails or other mesofauna, I'd love to feature your writing on the site under the community dispatches section. It doesn't have to be long or formal, just genuine. This is about giving more voices a platform and growing the hobby together.

Mesofauna.com is here to celebrate springtails, to keep knowledge alive, and to spark curiosity in new and seasoned hobbyists alike. My hope is that it grows alongside this subreddit, with each strengthening the other.

So here is the call to action: check out Mesofauna.com, send in your feedback, contribute your photos, and if you feel inspired, write an article. If contributing isn’t for you, that’s fine too—take a look anyway. You might just see these tiny creatures in a way you haven’t before.

Other Another profile but the same scammer!

Beware of this scammer who steals content and tricks people into thinking it's their own. They've even created a website to make it look more legitimate, but it's the same user from Cameroon scamming people. Here are their old and new profiles:

https://www.instagram.com/shopvariegatedplant/

https://www.instagram.com/springtailsculture/

And the website: https://springtailsculture.shop/

They claim to ship to all of the United States and worldwide, with a minimum order of $100 and free shipping on orders over $200...

Please be very careful and spread the word.

I just found this guy on new moss! I was excited because I didn't know my area could host stubbier cute ones like this. Their name containing "flea" does them injustice.

Collection Question/Advice TC Insects

Good day.

I have been looking over TC Insects inventory - or lack there of - and have been interested in trying to order from them. My gut told me to come here first, and ask about them.

I did a cursory search of the subred, and there's a TC Insects post from 3 and 2 years ago.

I'm wondering of anyone has had any current experience with them.

And if they ever restock :P

Thanks :)

Husbandry Question/Advice Advice on keeping Morulina genus

Any advice for culturing Morulina sp. springtails? I have a small culture that I haven’t really been able to get to grow. Also, what’s the best way to culture slime mold for them to eat? I’ve been struggling to actually get it to establish instead of just shrinking and (I assume?) dying off. (pictures are of my culture)

What are these?

I have recently moved into a rented flat, freshly built. I'm finding these everywhere, concrete slabs, kitchen slabs, window rails, floor, skirting.

Some are very small, ranging from 1-2mm, maybe smaller.

When I tap near them, small translucent ones move, little bigger pot shaped ones jump.

Please help me how can I remove them?

I have tried keeping the entire flat ventilated, enough sunlight. My area is already pretty dry, flat idk since it's recently built.

Identification Are these springtails?

Post image

I posted this same picture in r/gardening and some people suggested these were fungus gnats, and one person suggested it could be springtails. I’m very new to gardening and very unsure what these are and if I need to do anything.

For context, these showed up after a bit of overwatering + rain. I stupidly thought if I “drowned” them I’d reduce the population (I thought were tiny flies, don’t roast me.) this obviously backfired and they are happy and there’s more of them than ever.

I got a little cup with a few orange springtails at a local pet store. I love these little gummy bears! I was wondering if I could put them with my isopods when I get a communal big enough, what do you think?

Husbandry Question/Advice Mite help

I have quite a few fast moving mites in my tank and my springtails haven't been able to out-compete them. I feel like I have stopped seeing my springtails and now I saw my first dead baby this morning. I know that babies are fragile and some naturally dont make it but I'm worried that the mites may be related to the death and the springtails dissappearing.

They dont see interested in food at all, I'm not sure who to how to get rid of them.

Fairly certain it is a springtail. If it is-- a less common variety I have seen for springtail hitchhikers. Also wondering why it starts twerking like it's trying to scratch its back or something.

Seeking Seller/Trader Springtails in New Zealand

Anybody know where I can get springtails in NZ? Or is anyone from here in this forum? I tried catching my own but it's very hard and the ones I managed to get don't seem to be doing well.

Just wanting some basic white ones or anything really.

I saw this thing in my isopod terrarium and asked r/isopods if this was a mite. Someone answered that it was actually a Selaginella tamariscina. I just wanted double check here if it actually is. If it is, how can I care and properly culture them?
