What’s the difference between a sports car, a GT, a super car, and a hyper car?
This is a PSA since I see people often mix these up.
Background: I am a professional car designer, currently chief designer of a car company which I won’t mention out of respect.
All four of these vehicle types are often used to describe high performance driver oriented vehicles but they differ in 2 key areas. Intention, and architecture.
Sports car:
A light weight vehicle, only 2 seats, can have the engine mounted in any format but must be RWD or AWD. The frame is designed from the beginning to be rigid and light. Traditionally manual not automatic. An upgraded economy car is not a sports car.
Only 2 doors!
Intention:
these cars are focused purely on driving experience, not winning races, and not luxury. They typically have some comfort features but often forego larger stereos and electric seats in order to remain lightweight.
Examples: Mazda Miata, lotus Elise. Aston Martin Vantage, Porsche Cayman
GT (Grand Tourer):
They are almost exclusively front engine RWD, can be either a 2 seater or 2+2 layout. They have a slightly heavier more comfort oriented frame/features and usually have a larger engine to compensate for the extra weight. AWD or RWD.
Only 2 doors!
Intention:
These vehicles are the middle ground between sports cars and luxury cars. They are still high performance driver cars but offer more space and comfort for freeway driving and long drives (hence the name, grand tourer). Most “sports cars” these days are actually more akin to gt class than they are sports cars.
Examples: Mercedes Gt class, Aston Martin vanquish, Toyota Supra, jaguar f-type, Porsche 992
Super Car:
Almost always a mid engine layout, typically RWD but can be AWD. always 2 seaters. Usually use a significant amount of composite materials to achieve an extremely rigid light weight frame. Majority are dual clutch transmission. Some advanced tech but still street legal and driver oriented.
Only 2 doors!
Intention:
These vehicles aim at giving the driver a near race car experience but with a more fun sports car nature. They are luxurious but in the lightest way possible. They can be daily driven but will cost quite a bit to keep up (typically).
Examples: Porsche carrera gt, Ferrari 458, c8 corvette, Ferrari Enzo, McLaren 720s
Hyper car:
Usually uses a hybrid system for propulsion, extremely track oriented in all areas, frame is often carbon fiber along with most body panels. RWD or AWD. Active aero is a must. 1 or 2 seats. Almost no comfort features. The closest representation of a race car that can be road legal (some are not). Only 2 Doors!
Intention:
These cars are often referred to as “halo” cars, as they represent the farthest the company can push their technology. They are not necessarily drivers cars as they utilize technology to make the car go faster at the expense of rawness and pure driving experience. These cars have one focus, numbers. They are often limited in production numbers and typically require a special application process. 2 doors only!
Examples: Porsche 918, McLaren senna, Ferrari f80, sesto elemento, McLaren Solus Gt, McLaren speedtail,

Thanks for all your comments and some of you for your classic Reddit hate!
This list is to help inform people about how cars are actually classified by professionals in the industry, this includes: the design team, the marketing team, the engineering team, etc.
I don’t have time to reply to every ridiculous comment but if you have a serious question feel free to tag me in ur comment and I’ll try and offer an honest and accurate response.
Cheers.

Discussion Why aren't there more turbine–electric hybrids?
I mean a turbine that spins at a constant RPM that acts as a generator for an electric motor. It has most of the power of a turbine and the torque of an electric motor. Pretty much the only car with this setup is the Techrules AT96. It should be able to take track records at least.
