Tourist driver arrested after crash. 2 dead, 5 injured.

Please consider if renting car is correct for you, when travelling to Northern Norway. Sadly, there were fatalities yesterday, as forewarned many times.

https://www.vg.no/nyheter/i/Rjy6na/turist-siktet-etter-doedsulykke-i-troms

2 local women in their 70s from southern Troms, did not survive after a tourist drove into their driving line in slippery winter conditions and crashed head on into their car.

The 5 tourists are injuried and has been sent to the Regional Hospital in Tromsø, UNN.

Police has arrested and charged the asian tourist driver in his 50s.

From VG

To kvinner i 70-årene mistet livet da to biler frontkolliderte på E10 i Tjeldsund tirsdag ettermiddag.

Help with travel ideas and tips

I hope everyone is well! I need some help and ideas. Any natives from Norway, specifically from Tromso? I need tips on how to get a good deal on renting a car in mid December, lodging (nothing fancy just a warm place with Wi-Fi) that's not too expensive and mostly I want to see the Aurora lights! Where is the best place? Or what else is there to do that's underrated? Any help would be appreciated.

Tromso driving tips needed!

Hi!

I am visiting Tromsø from 18–23 November and deciding whether to rent a car for day trips to Sommarøy and nearby areas.

I am a confident driver and have experience driving in snow and difficult terrain, but not in Arctic winter conditions.

A few questions for locals and people who’ve driven on these roads in winters:

  1. How are the roads around Tromsø and Sommarøy typically in late November? Is driving manageable with winter tyres?
  2. Is staying 30 minutes outside the city centre practical, especially for driving back after dark?

Please share your real experience of these roads in November, rather than generic winter-driving warnings!

Does anyone recommend this cafe? What is the best way to get there from Tromsø city center without a car? Bus? Thanks!

I'm one of the developers of Arctic Seek, a walking puzzle game in Tromsø, and I'd like honest feedback

Transparency first. I'm one of the developers behind Arctic Seek, so this is a promotional post. The company behind it is Dathiaso AS, based here in Tromsø.

Arctic Seek turns Tromsø into a walking puzzle game on your phone. GPS guides you to 10 landmarks, and each stop unlocks when you're there in person. You solve a short puzzle or play a small mini-game, then move on to the next place.

The practical stuff:

- The route covers the city centre and crosses Tromsøbrua to the Arctic Cathedral. You choose the order.

- A pass costs 100 NOK. It runs in the browser, so there's no app to install.

- Several phones can share one pass, with shared progress and one timer.

- Race the clock for a spot on the Tromsø leaderboard, or take breaks and grab a coffee. The timer only counts time used.

It's new and has no reviews yet, so I'd like to hear what you think. If something breaks or a puzzle is too hard, tell me here or at contact@arcticseek.com.

Need help for 23year olds planning a trip to view Northern Lights

Hello everyone! My friends and I (group of 5 23yr olds) are planning a trip to view the northern lights in the first week of February. We are thinking of doing both Tromso and Lapland. This is our itinerary:

Feb 1st : Travel into Tromso - decide airport express vs taxi :

  • do a small gondola ride to see city view (this is open till 12 am)
  • Can do a scenic walk around harbor
  • Bar hopping, eating food
  • Big bus (120 USD) optional

Feb 2: Main Activity day

  • Do a snowmobile tour in the alps - 200 USD
  • Do aurora chase at night (can do a small minibus or big bus) - 250 USD

Feb 3 : Main city day

  • Visit attractions in the city such as museums, aquariums, cathedrals - 100-120 USD
  • Travel to rovianemi (overnight express) - 300 USD

Feb 4: Reach rovieniami at 8 am

  •  Igloo stay
  •  do another aurora chase)

Feb 5:

  • Hotel
  • husky sledding

Feb 6 - leave

We need some help in finding some budget options to reduce costs for our trip as well as general things we should keep in mind. We are aiming to spend something around 30000 NOK- 40000NOK and we would really want to not exceed this budget. We love doing adventurous things (not planning to ski), we dont plan to rent our own car.

Would really appreciate any recommendations on hotels, ways to cut cost that worked for you, suggestions on some tours that would save us money, changes to this itinerary, budget clothing recommendations if we dont get clothing on budget tours (we come from places that are 5F-15F in the worst case, average 20-25F) etc. Is one aurora tour enough in tromso ?

Thanks for your help!

Day Tour Options from Tromso

Hi! Will be visiting Tromso for 4-5 days in March. For sure we’ll be doing some northern lights tours, but I’m trying to decide on what to do for the other days/ during daylight.

I’m interested in nature/ landscapes/ fjord tours. For fjords, would it be better via an arctic cruise or a van that drives through Sommaroy and Kvaloya? Are they 2 distinct tours or would I be seeing the same things from either tour?

I’m also considering taking a ferry to Finnsnes then taking a day tour (can’t drive in snow) around Senja. I’ve only found one local tour provider for this though (please let me know if you know of more tour providers!)

In short, which of these (arctic fjord cruise/ Sommaroy and Kvaloya/ Senja) do you think is worth it during March? And if you have any experience doing these, do let me know how it was

Thanks :)

Woke up to some cold, white stuff outside on my veranda and on top of the mountains over at the mainland. Winter is definitely coming, and only a few minutes later, the wind had been picking up and the fog had shown up.

So, another morning in Tromsø. I was walking into the kitchen to make some coffee and have some breakfast. Then I cast a glance out the living room windows and saw this. A mixture of hail and snow was covering the deck outside, and the top of the mountains, on the mainland are white. But only a couple of minutes later, the wind picked up and fog obscured most of the mainland and the fjord. Weather conditions are changing rapidly here.

Aurora Borealis dancing across the sky over the north side of Tromsø, this week.

I’m living on the north side of the Tromsø island, and have been living in Tromsø for more than 20 years now.
The view from my home is amazing all year round, if the weather is okay and there’s no thick fog to obscure the view.

Some days ago - I can’t remember if it was Monday or Tuesday, but it was a cold and clear evening, almost no wind and with negative degrees. Minus 5 Celsius and humid.

That’s perfect conditions for an amazing northern lights display , but of course, sometimes they simply don’t show up.

At first there was only a light green mist, kind of glowing a little.

But then the mist started shifting, the colours; a strong light green and yellow, started forming and twisted themselves across the black star filled sky.

I was staying outside for about an hour, and almost froze my hands off because I forgot to bring warm gloves. If you’re going to visit Tromsø , and you’re planning to stay outdoors- always bring warm clothes! The weather can change in only minutes!

Anyone find a camera?

Complete shot in the dark but has anyone found a silver Fuji camera with a green leather case?

It left behind yesterday/last night at the McDonald’s (no they don’t have it).

Tours to book ahead

Hi,

I’m traveling to Tromsø from November 23rd to December 1st. Which tours would you recommend booking in advance, and which ones would be better to book once we arrive?

Complete Aurora Forecast Hub for Tromso

Post image

I gathered and compiled everything that I know since 2013 in 11 trips to the lights and created a forecast and guideline hub for those places. Basically I do this for my very own need but maybe it would be also helpful to others. Free. No signup. No login.

Need your input!

Travelling to Tromso from Brussels with a friend this December 20 to 24.

Need inputs on these:
1. Where to book hotels (Shortlisted few Airbnbs in Tromso)
2. Which activities to do in 4 days and where to book them. Is online the best option? Which vendor is good?
3. Main Concern - How to commute between Airport, Room and activities.

Thought of taking a package. Damn expensive. Also, not sure which travel vendor is legit and safe. Hence, trying to plan things on my own.

P.S - I have not driven in snow. I believe I can manage. But not too sure. Don’t wanna risk if I am being too confident. Any alternatives?

Thanks in Advance!

Title: Norway for 14 nights in September 2027: Senja + Tromsø or Lofoten + Oslo? Travelling without a car and struggling to choose

Hi everyone!

My wife and I are planning a Norway trip from 2–16 September 2027, flying from Mumbai, India. We’re trying to finalise our itinerary and could really use advice from people who have visited these places, especially without renting a car.

We love nature, dramatic landscapes, beaches, mountains, quiet villages, scenic walks and sunsets. We’re not into nightlife or party scenes. We want a relaxed trip, but after putting together a draft itinerary, I’m worried that we might be planning too much downtime and not enough to actually do.

Our main dilemma

We’re currently deciding between:

Option 1: Lofoten + Oslo

  • Around 10 nights in Lofoten, with one base in Sørvågen/Reine.
  • 4 nights in Oslo before flying back to Mumbai.
  • Reinebringen as our main hike, possibly Munkebu as a second hike.
  • Explore Å, Reine, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy and nearby beaches/viewpoints.
  • One kayaking experience and one sauna session with a cold-water plunge.

The problem is that 10 nights in southern Lofoten feels like too much for what we have planned. Most days seem to revolve around visiting fishing villages, taking photos, walking around and relaxing, with only one or two proper hikes. I’m worried we’ll run out of things to do, particularly because we won’t have a car.

Option 2: Tromsø + Senja + Oslo

  • Spend a few nights in Tromsø.
  • Explore Senja for several nights.
  • Finish with 3–4 nights in Oslo before flying home.
  • Potentially visit Sommarøy from Tromsø.

Senja looks incredible, especially the mountain and coastal scenery, but I’m concerned about getting around without a car. I’d love to do Hesten or Tungeneset, explore the scenic coastline and have a few proper nature days without relying on expensive private transfers or guided tours.

Would Tromsø + Senja offer more variety and a better use of our time, or would we be sacrificing too much by skipping Lofoten?

Our non-negotiable constraints

  • No rental car. Neither of us wants to drive in Norway. We need an itinerary that genuinely works with buses, ferries, walking and, where worthwhile, an occasional organised excursion.
  • Accommodation with a kitchen. We’re happy to cook most meals and carry some ready-to-eat and dry food from India to manage costs.
  • Budget-conscious. We’re aiming for roughly ₹4 lakh for two people for the overall trip, including international flights, accommodation, domestic transport, groceries and a couple of paid experiences. We know Norway is expensive, so we’re trying to keep things realistic.
  • Nature over cities. We’re happy with just a few days in Oslo and would rather spend more time in the north.
  • Only 2–3 proper hikes in total. We enjoy hiking, but we don’t want a demanding hike every other day. We’d like a mix of easy coastal walks, viewpoints, beaches and relaxed exploration.
  • A few experiences, not a tour-heavy trip. We’re interested in kayaking and a sauna with an Arctic sea plunge. We don’t need whale-watching tours, expensive excursions or guided Northern Lights tours.
  • Minimal internal flights. We’re flying into and out of Oslo, and we’d prefer not to spend too much time or money on multiple domestic flights.
  • September travel. We understand that weather can be unpredictable and public transport may be less frequent than in peak summer.

Accommodation question

We found a possible Airbnb in Lofoten for around ₹65,000 (sharing the listing below). We’re trying to work out whether staying in one place for so long makes sense, or whether we should split our stay between two bases.

Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.co.in/rooms/31561817

Would Sørvågen be a sensible base without a car, or would Svolvær be more practical for buses, groceries and activities? We understand that staying in Svolvær makes the southern Lofoten villages and Reinebringen much harder to reach.

What we’d really appreciate advice on

  1. If you had 14 nights in Norway in early September without a car, would you choose Tromsø + Senja or Lofoten + Oslo?
  2. Is 10 nights in Lofoten too much for our travel style, or are we underestimating how much there is to do?
  3. Can Senja realistically be explored without a car, or would we end up spending a lot on tours and transfers?
  4. Is Sommarøy worth including as a day trip from Tromsø in September?
  5. Would you recommend splitting the northern part of the trip between two bases, or keeping one base to avoid constantly moving luggage?
  6. Are there any scenic walks, accessible hikes, beaches or free activities we’re overlooking?
  7. Is our approximate ₹4 lakh budget for two remotely realistic?
  8. Also please help with public transport and also any airbnb recommendations

We’re not trying to tick off every famous place. We’d rather experience fewer places properly, have time for the scenery and avoid spending a fortune getting between locations. At the same time, we don’t want to spend 10 nights somewhere only to discover that our lack of a car severely limits what we can do.

Would love to hear from anyone who has travelled around these areas independently, particularly in September. Honest advice on what you’d choose differently would be really helpful. Thank you!

Possibility of photographing owns in Tromso?

I'm currently in Tromso for a few days and I'd love to photograph some owls in and around Tromso. Can someone guide on possible locations or recommend companies that offer a short birding tour?

Tromsø vs Abisko vs Rovaniemi in December — Best chances of seeing Northern Lights?

I'm planning a trip from 20–31 December 2026 and want to maximise my chances of seeing the Northern Lights. I'm considering Tromsø, Abisko and Rovaniemi. I'm happy to stay in remote locations, join aurora-chasing tours and spend more if it significantly improves my chances. For those who've visited these places in December: Which destination would you recommend for the highest probability of seeing the aurora? Is Abisko's microclimate a significant advantage over Tromsø? Are Tromsø's aurora-chasing tours worth it? Would you stay in one place or split the trip between destinations? I'd love to hear about your actual experiences. Thanks!

Best excursion experiences?

I’m using the official visit tromso site to book excursions but would love any personal recs on fav activities. We have already booked a large silent green whale watching boat for one day.

Is snowmobiling on lyngen mountains worth it?

Should we do dog sledding? Is reindeer feeding worth it?

Should we consider staying in a glass house outside of town?

We’ll be in tromso 4 nights in mid January 2027.

Hi, do you know which places serve mulled wine ? Could not find a list anywhere thanks!
