Traumatic occurrences do not get stored like regular events in the brain, and for good reason. A survival instinct keeps the memory running in loop to look for possible continued danger. This is why rumination persists. When this is happening your PF cortex (executive function, logical decision making, learned âwisdomâ if you will) goes off-line. For these two reasons, concentration is difficult and thinking (finding solutions) and/ or attempting to not to think (mediation) are almost impossible.
If you can find a therapist that specialize in trauma, and/or that practices EMDR or brain-spotting, they can help you break that loop. By re-orient/storing the traumatic event to longer-term memory, you can then start to heal on a deeper level.
The good thing about EMDR is that it can be used as a short-term strategy to reduce the reactive / rumination cycle. Long-term, it also helps reduce triggering events, disruptive thoughts, flashbacks, etc., which can be scary. The somatization of trauma is real, by working to heal it you also avoid having it show up as another illness in your body.
A professional can help you return to being more fully present, so that you can then figure out how to get back to fully living again. May you find the help that you are seeking and may the right people guide you on your path to feeling safe again.

If you have eyes and a conscience you know that ICE are henchmen for the rise of fascism and use of terror by this administration.
You get rid of due process and habeas corpus for one, you erode the process for all.
No one is saying criminals are good people. Donât be obtuse.
Forever FUCK ICE.

Great way to reset. May the fall winds aid in healing your hurt. đ
On a personal note, there is no bad way to meditate. You came to it and did it. And when you are ready youâll come backâŠand maybe it becomes easier. Thatâs why itâs called a practice.
Sitting meditation right after experiencing truma is not often recommended. But meditation can also be taking a walk in nature, looking at the moon and stars, making a meal for yourselfâŠso long as there is some focus, mindfulness and intention.
Final note, I recommend Pema Chödrönâs writing to many but especially those that are experiencing distress & heart-ache. Be well, fellow human đ€

Are there any other women who donât constantly fear for their safety, or is it just me?
đŻ I had a similar trajectory. Lots of public transport in my younger years, roaming lower-income neighborhoods, and braving snow and freezing cold weather, and of course male harassment. Having my own car, later in life, not only felt like freedom but also served as a barrier from a variety of dangers.

Same. Growing you in a big city and having lots of autonomy since I was a kid Iâve learned or have a kind of right-seized fear of situations. I trust that (even subconsciously) Iâm always aware or my surroundings, and maybe most importantly to trust my gut.
As a BIPOC woman smaller towns can feel particularly creeps and sometimes flat out dangerous. Iâm not a stranger danger person but with whatâs going on in the US, I have less trust in folks. Sad but true. Iâm also so accustomed to having noise and people around me that when Iâm in quieter, less populated areas, it actually feels a bit unnerving đŹ
