I’ve accepted that the BioWare I loved, is gone.

Mass Effect, Dragon Age, KOTOR…that’s what I’ll remember them for.

Bethesda isn't far behind. My expectations/hype for TES6 is non existent right now. With the push for discless consoles there's absolutely no reason to pre order anything ever again.

41

u/penywinkle Jul 10 '26

To add to the "B" trend, Blizzard lost their soul when they got bought out by Activision...

32

u/ibyczek78 Jul 10 '26

Don't forget Bungie and they're now infamous shit show acquisition / separation with Activision as well.

1

u/Benedikto0 Jul 10 '26

YES! I played WoW for 15 years and now I cannot go back because I have no idea what is going on.

37

u/JaylynnDay7 Jul 10 '26

Bethesda lowkey (or hell, highkey even) skyrimpilled itself

It's why Starfield ended up as Skyrim in space but worse, even when they weren't trying to Skyrim in space it

The only thing I enjoyed was ship building and some gun customization.

1

u/CookieMonsterOnsie Jul 11 '26

Then you take the thing for a spin and realize that hey, this is actually pretty terrible, and go play Scritchy Scratchy for an hour.

3

u/JaylynnDay7 Jul 10 '26

That is why I said “but worse”

But it does make a pretty bad tomato.

8

u/PomponOrsay Jul 10 '26

skyrim in space sounds dope actually. they should just do that. dovahkin in space.

2

u/ChudSmasher69420 Jul 10 '26

They'll invent reasons that shouldn't exist. Exclusive content for pre-orders is already a thing so expect that to ramp up, too.

2

u/JTX35 Jul 10 '26

For real. Like when TES6 was announced back in like 1982 or whatever, I was hype af for it. I was willing to give them a pass for the release of Fallout 76 since its an MMO which is different from what they normally do, and although I didn't play it because MMOs aren't my jam I heard they got it in pretty good shape like 2 years later.

However Starfield being the type of strictly single-player RPG they're known for killed all my enthusiasm for TES6. Bethesda is supposed to be a AAA studio, but honestly that game to me looked like a AA game and just the camera movement and stuff felt super dated.

2

u/OGGriftimus Jul 10 '26

My Bethesda Days ended with Oblivion. Skyrim was a great game, but for me it was too much of trying bring back the feel of Morrowwind with some reworking of Oblivions graphics. The time between games is both a blessing and a curse... keep them steady you build a dedicated fan base or steady income... wait too long and then you become Bethesda and teader on the and of company and your IP taken over and Halo'd

2

u/Capraos Jul 10 '26

It'll still be at least two more years before Elder Scrolls 6. Every bit of news I get about it is how it's still got a lot of development left.

1

u/EternitySearch Jul 10 '26

I don’t think TES6 exists or will ever exist. Microsoft wants Bethesda to focus on Fallout because of the TV show. We likely won’t get anything else from Bethesda in the foreseeable future.

1

u/ZylaTFox Jul 10 '26

Bethesda hasn't been a good company fo ra long time. FO4 wasn't great and most other games are unmitigated crap when they come out. They depend on the modders to have a decent game.

1

u/Cuts4th Jul 15 '26

At least Doom is still good but I agree, I doubt TES6 or Fallout 5 will be good.

0

u/Existing_Radish_3440 Jul 11 '26

Yep. They been on a downward trend for a while its just with the last 2 major releases and of course the updates and re-releases of old games its never felt steeper. Like I love Skyrim but even then its a flawed product compared to previous releases. Streamlining the rpg elements down. Making the vanilla world feel kind of binary.

Then we got Fallout 4 which further devaited from their rpg mechanics while delivering a kinda subpar story (still fun but not the greatest). Then there was 76 and all the insane decisions made around the release and development.

And then there was Starfield. Now props to starfield for trying a new setting. Bringing back missed rpg mechanics but its story and world fell kinda flat. It felt old when it was released.

Now we have to wait for Elder Scrolls 6. I am curious about it more than I am excited rn. Its been a long time. I personally think its not going to live up to expectations. Maybe it'll be a great world to explore, with good side quests occasionally but I can't help but feel it will be "Skyrim 2" essentially trying to do what Skyrim did but nearly 2 decades later with no feedback taken to heart

u/redditsellout-420 Jul 10 '26

Seems you've forgotten jade empire

37

u/Traditional_Hour5529 Jul 10 '26

That was a fun one. The twist wasn't as good as KOTOR but still a pretty fun twist.

29

u/redditsellout-420 Jul 10 '26

You really can't top kotors twist though, im still pissed that gamefaqs spoiled it for me

2

u/ProotzyZoots Jul 10 '26

I had a friend spoil it for me and somehow it made the twist hit even harder when it did. I guess I was just in denial and/or assumed my friend was messing with me so when it actually happened I had a reaction very similar to Luke when Vader told him he's his father.

I played so long ago I don’t even remember what it was.

1

u/Dependent_Rip3076 Jul 10 '26

Halo

1

u/redditsellout-420 Jul 10 '26

Halo has a plot twist?

1

u/Dependent_Rip3076 Jul 10 '26

Whoops lol.

I just meant to put it in a general comment, not your thread, sorry 😅

1

u/Preeng Jul 10 '26

I heard there was a twist and that was enough to make me figure it out once I started playing. It wasn't really subtle...

12

u/IronMonkeyofHam Jul 10 '26

Very few game storylines beat KOTOR. The 2nd one taught me a good bit about why the dark side enticed the good Jedi so much

2

u/Indigocell Jul 10 '26

Have you ever seen the movie "Equilibrium"? The type of society portrayed in that film always reminded me of what it might look like when you take the Jedi code to the extreme. It would be cool to see an idea like that explored in Star Wars imo. Make us really sympathize with the dark side when the balance of the force has swung so far in the other direction.

1

u/Jaku2011 Jul 10 '26

The twist is so dumb and goofy that it loops around to being awesome, I love Jade Empire.

1

u/TrippyyA1 Jul 10 '26

Still on sale for less than 5$ all the time on Xbox as well

2

u/IronMonkeyofHam Jul 10 '26

When are we getting a remake of that gem? I beat it with every fighting style back in the Xbox era

2

u/TransparentMastering Jul 11 '26

Oh man, that brings back memories. Great game.

4

u/MeraSC Jul 10 '26

And it's still missing their absolute best games, BG1 and 2.

3

u/DominantDo Jul 10 '26

I'd say that dao is better than BG1

3

u/WulfgarofIcewindDale Jul 10 '26

You would be wrong

7

u/DominantDo Jul 10 '26

I adore bg1 but dao is just so re-playable it's maddening!

2

u/l2aiko Jul 10 '26

Im literally subscribed to a guy that does 5 hour long streams everyday even during holidays replaying BG1 and BG2 over and over again

3

u/DominantDo Jul 10 '26

Bg2 is bioware's Magnum opus imo. Bg1 is incredible too but doesn't have the same highs that bg2 has

1

u/l2aiko Jul 10 '26

Yeah, BG2 is the younger brother that was taught keeping in mind what was missing from teaching the older brother lol

1

u/MeraSC Jul 10 '26

Davaeorn's (assuming that's who you're talking about) streams are really cool! I sometimes have him on while remote working, it's chill. BG really has an insane replayability!

2

u/l2aiko Jul 10 '26

That's the name, couldn't remember on top of my head! His build, spells and class guides have been very helpful to my return back after so many years.

1

u/WulfgarofIcewindDale Jul 10 '26

I think I’m your opposite. Yin to your yang! 🤝

1

u/TheeAntelope Jul 10 '26

I've tried so many times to play this and I don't get far. I only have it on mobile, is it better on console/PC and just isn't mobile friendly? For comparison, I've played Kotor 1 and 2 on mobile multiple times.

1

u/redditsellout-420 Jul 10 '26

Probably, I can't even find the mobile port for jade empire

1

u/RichWinzz Jul 10 '26

and Baldurs Gate 1 &2

I have a glimmer of hope that OwlCat will deliver us an incredible experience with their game set in The Expanse universe coming out next year. So far they've done a mostly-favorable job with their CRPG games (Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader). Osiris Protocol, their "The Expanse" game, looks like it'll play similarly to Mass Effect, but is in the same setting as my favorite show of all time.

(Edit: Said Paizo instead of OwlCat, thanks for the correction.)

u/Inspired_Nuisance Jul 10 '26

Wow this wasn't even on my radar lol... Looks decent. One thing that The Expanse doesn't really have as far as a worldbuilding element is that the only species in the solar system is Human. The books were originally intended to be lore drops for an RPG setting that the writers wanted to make, but we get Martian, Earther, and Belter as the 3 somewhat different "races" that is, unless you read past where the show ends in the books. You get hundreds of worlds and plenty of xeno-biology to play around with then...

Exodus, exploring a more vast space, looks like it will have more variety in that regard. Though it's a little weird to me that they'd choose "40,000 years in the future" when we kind of already have a 40k franchise that for sure has more lore than this new thing can hope to achieve.

2

u/Darth-Sonic Jul 10 '26

…That’s OwlCat though?

2

u/Inspired_Nuisance Jul 10 '26

Fuck, you're right, Paizo does pathfinder, thanks.

6

u/Super-Franky-Power Jul 10 '26

Also Sonic Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood, truly a masterpiece. /s

2

u/BPViridian Jul 10 '26

An unsung hero. I was hoping this would get a series in the likes of Mario & Luigi. Sigh

2

u/BuckManscape Jul 10 '26

It’s been gone for a decade.

2

u/skyguy_22 Jul 11 '26

This BioWare ist actually gone. Most people, who build these games have left the studio. It's mostly just the name that's left. So you might have to look towards other studios, if you want the old BioWare.

1

u/RCMW181 Jul 10 '26

Owelcat and Larien have become my choice for RPGs.

1

u/TwiceBrokenWatch Jul 10 '26

Me too, my friend. I will forever love them for what they gave us, but unless something truly drastic changes they will never again get a cent of my money.

1

u/paradoxpancake Jul 10 '26

Can I potentially recommend Owlcat to you? If you like the classics, like really good stories, and don't mind ARPGs like classic Baldur's Gate or Divinity: Original Sin, they write some really good stuff.

1

u/Knicks-Knacs-sKnacks Jul 10 '26

Wow, still sort of feels like im still living in that era..I haven't played through any of those series in its entirety. Still want to. Time is just a fabricated construct.

1

u/RandomGreenArcherMan Jul 10 '26

Fate of the Old Republic is in development by a new studio and the creative director is from the OGs

1

u/kittenTakeover Jul 10 '26

I mean Bioware is over 30 years old, so that's not very surprising.

1

u/zveroshka Jul 10 '26

Mass Effect in particular is something I struggled to let go, but I think I've accepted it at this point. Andromeda was fine for what it was, but I'd be absolutely shocked if they were able to ever recapture the magic of the original ME trilogy.

1

u/TheDELFON Jul 11 '26

Jade Empire

ONE THOUSAND CUTS!!!!!

1

u/Consistent_Detail_61 Jul 11 '26

Blizzard is shit now too

0

u/The_8th_Degree Jul 10 '26

They successfully destroyed Dragon Age. Only way they'd fix that is a complete retcon remake of Veilguard and make it DA: Dreadwolf.

Bioware has 1 last chance with ME4, and it's very difficult to have any hope for it given past releases.

0

u/SmoothConfection1115 Jul 10 '26

I have zero hope.

The original mass effect story has essentially been told, and wrapped up in the first 3 games.

And their ability to craft interesting stories, IMO, has been lost. And their recent releases are the evidence.

DAVG? It was not well received, and as a fan of the series, after seeing the reviews, I didn’t have much interest in trying it.

Anthem? That thing is dead.

Andromeda? Well, given they’re returning to the Milky Way for ME4, that doesn’t like it was a success.

I expect it will probably flop, and EA will pull plug on this once legendary RPG studio. Because that’s what EA does.

1

u/The_8th_Degree Jul 12 '26

Not continuing the Trilogy is a good choice on their part. Shep doesn't need more story.

Veilguard was an outright failure, there's no way around that. Why? I don't have a clue but unless they retconed the whole thing with a successful new release then DA Is unfortunately dead.

We don't talk about Anthem.

Andromeda flopped and that's not a big surprise. Plot holes, empty worlds, pointless missions/objectives, no impactful choices, absolute GARBAGE loot system, terrible multiplayer, a certified half-made game. I still can't get over the fact it took them 7 MONTHS after release to give us access to the X5 Ghost. The games LITERAL ICONIC WEAPON that defaults in every cutscene. Like how the **** do you not have that ready to launch?

BUT Andromeda also failed due to EA's shit production methods. The game was more than halfway done when the geniuses at EA decided to switch from Unreal to Frostbite to save cash. Bioware had to scrap everything and start over from the beginning without an extension to the games release deadline. They did the best they could with what little time they had but it still flopped. Andromeda had some good ideas and could have been a good game, but sadly, this is what we ended up with.

I don't have much hope left either. Been let down too often; but I'm willing to hope just a bit for ME4 given how much time they've had to work on it. At current it doesn't seem to be a rushed release so maybe, just maybe, it will be good.
