Image / Video It's baffling just how many people doesn't understand this

Post image

If you're someone who pre-orders games, you're an active participant in the constant enshitification of gaming. Doesn't matter what game it is, you're contributing to a scummy corporate tactic that serves no positive benefit to the player.

It made sense with physical copies that had a limited quantity, now it's an outdated tradition from a bygone era.

Yes. The people preordering the game were buying it day 1 anyways, it literally makes no difference. OP is just mad and yelling at the clouds.

53

u/PhatTuna Aug 13 '26

It does make a difference. On PlayStation, Sony takes your money for the preorder immediately. Why give them your money months early for no reason?

Also on PlayStation, if you want to cancel your preorder and get your money back, you have to contact customer support. They make it as hard as legally possible to get your money back.

Amd doing this for games none of us have even seen gameplay for yet? That just sets a bad precedent and sends the platform holder and publisher a dangerous message.

u/rtakehara Aug 13 '26

Also sometimes pre orders comes with exclusive bonuses. The exclusive bonuses have no reason to be exclusive, they are maliciously making it limited to make more money and I see no reason to reward this kind of behavior.

18

u/Noble-Jester Aug 13 '26

What's worse is over the last six to eight years, they've just started handing out those "Exclusive" rewards at later dates, making it even sillier to preorder.

u/PhatTuna Aug 13 '26

I often buy physical games like a week or two after release, and they always come with the preorder bonus in the box.

-2

u/Electrical_Rate1026 Aug 14 '26

Not anymore

2

u/PhatTuna Aug 14 '26

Since when? Saros was the last physical game I bought, and it had codes for the preorder skins in the box.

Is it online/multiplayer? No exactly.

7

u/Soulblade32 Aug 13 '26

I guess I just have much less of an issue with people spending their money than others. I see zero difference in buying a game day 1 compared to buying it a month in advance. Some people may have disposable income today to preorder a game whereas they may not on launch.

2

u/Drummer-Turbulent Aug 13 '26

Has everyone forgotten how many games released broken and glitched as fuck? hell Spider-man 2 has many glitches that should not still be around

2

u/nthomas504 Aug 13 '26

Platninumed it and have no idea what you are talking about

0

u/Drummer-Turbulent Aug 13 '26

i can't go 1 playthrough without thugs randomly clipping into buildings. not allowing me to complete a crime request. Recently i had a hunter running in place...

1

u/Soulblade32 Aug 13 '26

Ironically, I think the only bug I ran into AT all so far this year was not being able to sprint in Ghost of Tsushima until I turned off my console and turned it back on, which was super frustrating. Yes, there are bugs. It is highly unlikely that reviewers are going to catch those kinds of bugs. It also is unlikely that bugs that are mostly minor inconvienences are going to deter someone from buying a game they have been excited to play for a year or more. Not many games release broken as fuck, the only one that I can think of off the top of my head was Cyber Punk.

Again, my argument is that if you are buying the game on day 1, it makes no difference if you preorder or not. You aren't going to know about bugs on launch day if you play at launch regardless. And I highly doubt people preorder games if they don't plan on playing it for a few months.

1

u/Drummer-Turbulent Aug 13 '26

Patience always wins out my friend. there are many instances of games releasing with many bugs and glitches. Heck there are times a game will release and be out for a bit. then they ADD IN microtransactions that didn't exist beofre to skirt reviews. Always wait. you save more and if it's a game you want to play. now it's been fixed (unless were talking Bethesda in which case they probably broke it again)

1

u/LessInThought Aug 14 '26

They do these things because idiots keep buying these broken ass games. .

-1

u/0hMyGandhi Aug 13 '26

Preordering makes absolutely no sense. I did it twice in my life and I felt like a moron.

First time was Halo 3, and the second time was for Killzone 2.

Halo 3 sold like hotcakes, and availability was limited, but not impossible. This was back when customer service lines would be 10-20 deep of people waiting to pick up their preorders.

And it wasn't really for perks. Maybe some merch depending on the store, but mainly it was literally to be sure that you'd be playing with friends on day one.

I'm 35. I don't know how old you are, but if you are on the younger side, I'd tell you that day 1 patches, season passes, and the idea of a "base game" just...wasn't...a thing. On the PC side, sure. But console gaming was always a bit more old fashioned.

Oblivion is widely considered the first game to have DLC, and that was back in 2006, and it was for horse armor.

All that preordering does is incentivize publishers, (not developers) to strip more content away from the "base game" to sell to you as DLC. X360/PS3 era made popular the trend where DLC that would "come out" months later was actually on the disc, but hidden away.

And remember - what you are telling publishers is that their expensive advertising campaigns and sales tactics are working, and you're making companies like EA and their shareholders very happy because you intend to buy the product regardless of reviews.

And again, what people need to realize is that most companies will not grow a conscience and "do right by the players". If you are telling them that youre willing to spend 100 dollars to get a day one ultra edition of a game without waiting for reviews, that's even better.

Now? They say you'd need to spend 100 bucks on a more premium edition of GTAVI to get the "base" game. Rockstar removed features that were standard in earlier games, and are just selling it back to you for a higher price. And preorders will always tell publishers that you as a player condone those practices.

-1

u/rtakehara Aug 13 '26

I don't have an issue with how people spend their money, I have an issue with companies being rewarded by bad behavior by exploiting the fear of missing out, If everyone waits for reviews before buying anything, nobody would buy anything, a little bit of faith and risk taking is fine, but they make artificial rewards, show no gameplay, even the fact that they take your money before giving the product feels wrong and abusive.

2

u/xvsero Aug 14 '26

I'm still a bit annoyed at Control not doing that. They had some preorder exclusives that stayed exclusive and they looked so cool. Apparently you can get most of them on PC with modding files so I guess I'll do that since I have it on PC.

https://www.reddit.com/r/controlgame/comments/1aocfe2/is_there_a_way_to_get_preorder_and_deluxe_edition/

1

u/Impossible-Fig3114 Aug 14 '26

Not to be 'that guy' but they are called exclusives for a reason

1

u/SOSpammy Aug 14 '26

In the case of Grand Theft Auto V the pre-order bonus didn't become available until the game got remastered, and you had to buy the remaster to get it. I assume the same will be for GTA 6.

1

u/Electrical_Rate1026 Aug 14 '26

Not with the Fire Jason in Friday 13 game. That preorder skin was never released at a later stage. It was “sold” for thousands of dollar at sketchy sites.

4

u/Noble-Jester Aug 14 '26

There is always outliers, I wasn't trying to say EVERY GAME, in a literal sense, hands out it's pre-order bonuses later on, but a good few have, and it's not a satisfying feeling.

That take also comes from someone who also think Limited Time Items are stupid as hell, and should definitely be available to anyone any time.

Just not the "I paid extra early during a risk period to show my dedication" kind of unique rewards.

2

u/AscendMoros Aug 14 '26

I mean preorder bonuses have been a thing since I started gaming in like 2008. Idk why we’re acting like they haven’t been rewarded for this behavior for almost 20 years.

Also sometimes they are things that will in fact run out. As in a miniature statue for your desk. Stuff like makes sense to be limited runs.

1

u/rtakehara Aug 14 '26

I never acted as if this haven't happened for years, in fact I always hated the concept of paying for a product that you don't receive in the same day, I do, however, understand that shipping a physical product over long distances sometimes take some time, and a tracking feature do make the product feel more owned, but to answer for everyone else, maybe they don't know it's nothing new.

In the case of actual limited editions that are actually impossible to be infinitely reproduced then my complaint doesn't apply, of course. Even physical copies with no bonuses whatsoever, they need time to be made and shipped, so it would make sense to pre order so that it can be played at the same time as digital copies.

1

u/PhatTuna Aug 13 '26

What's crazy is the worse it's getting, the more ppl that are defending it. Before digital started outpacing physical I remember it being a geral consensus among gamers that pre-ordering games was stupid. And it made WAY more sense to preorder back then than it does now.

And I just learned today that apparently that all digital platforms take all your money as soon as you preorder. WHAT? How is everyone okay with that? Ive never paid money to preorder a physical game. Even today I could preorder Wolverine on Amazon, and my cc wont get charged till they ship the game to me.

21

u/killerspawn97 Aug 13 '26

Counterpoint, what difference does it make giving Sony money for a game 3 months in advance vs 1 hour in advance or heck even 1 day after the fact, the game doesn’t magically go on sale at some point and Sony still it’s getting all the money (or whoever your buying the game from) so it really makes zero offence when you buy the game you know your gonna buy.

9

u/chowmaing Aug 13 '26

waiting 1 day after embargo and seeing reviews shows publishers that they cant just release broken games and expect to get paid

11

u/Rynetx Aug 13 '26

Some of us like to have an opinion on a product we try and we don’t need some internet guy to tell us how to like a product.

12

u/Koribakusuta0708 Aug 13 '26

I'm gonna buy and play games how I have for over 30 years. No amount of reddit bitching will change that.

-3

u/HumbleAlbatross2944 Aug 13 '26

Im gonna keep bitching on Reddit how I have for over 30 years. No amount of your opinion will change that.

6

u/Koribakusuta0708 Aug 13 '26

Doesn't really hit thay hard. Just makes you seem like a pathetic weesle.

-1

u/HumbleAlbatross2944 Aug 13 '26

Same can be said about your comments chief

1

u/BumbleBear1 Aug 13 '26

That's the rational thing to do, so naturally people will be against it. Jokes aside, that's a huge reason why it's not just pointless for consumers (unless there's a bonus), but also harmful to everyone in the long run. It definitely tells the company it's ok to release incomplete and broken products, because people will throw money at them regardless

If one is going to preorder, just wait til there's more information, at the very least. Some reviewers don't spoil anything, get products far ahead of time, and only speak on gameplay/performance, so there's enough time to know if it's for you or not and still preorder while making an informed purchase.

Do whatever y'all want in the end if you truly don't care, but people are still going to try to reason with perceived irrational/uninformed behavior. It's how we try and look out for each other, even if it may appear as asshole behavior... Sometimes lol

1

u/Cruxis87 Aug 14 '26

reviews are usually a week or two before release. Or they can just do what CDPR did and only allow the PC version to be reviewed. Or what multiple companies have done and make review versions that have a bunch of bullshit removed from it, but included in the final release.

1

u/killerspawn97 Aug 14 '26

Right but if the game works perfectly fine then really there’s no difference between a pre order and picking up on day 2, like if your skeptical about a game that’s fine but if everything about it looks solid then why not? Worse case scenario it’s a cyberpunk situation and you gotta get a refund

1

u/Soulblade32 Aug 13 '26

The majority of people don't look at reviews. So many reviewers have been shown to be paid to promote the game and if they give too low of a score they are blacklisted by the company, meaning they can't get early access to write their reviews. Why the fuck do we trust those that have a financial incentive to give good scores to mediocre games?

I literally watch the first trailer or 2 of a game and say "that looks fun" and play it. I don't care if others like or hate it.

-1

u/Cruxis87 Aug 14 '26

I literally watch the first trailer or 2 of a game and say "that looks fun" and play it.

I can't do that anymore. They are all 3 second action cuts. Games are not played in 3 second segments. It's the game play between those action points that determines if a game will be enjoyable, and they all leave that out.

-1

u/NoCoolNameMatt Aug 13 '26

Differences:

1) Loss of information in your purchase decision you would have otherwise had. What if it ends up bad? You're giving up the ability to act on that information for zero benefit.

2) Loss of investment value. Paying money months early for no gain is bad process because that fee cannot earn you interest during the time of the preorder. It seems small for a single game, but when you have many bills that adds up to significant lost opportunity.

When giving a company money, the question isn't "why shouldn't I give them money?" It is, "why should I give them money?" You should get something in exchange for your dollars.

0

u/killerspawn97 Aug 14 '26

The game looks fun from the trailers I’ve seen, therefore I give them money based on the info I have.

On top of that in regards to bills to be paid if I’m struggling so hard that I can’t afford a single $80 personal purchase for myself in a month then I have bigger things to worry about then video games.

-2

u/speedbreaka Aug 13 '26

Cause you are supporting anti consumer strategies that influence other people. Gonk

1

u/killerspawn97 Aug 14 '26

Uh huh, who told you to have that idea?

8

u/Refrigerator_Lower Aug 13 '26

I guess I've been really blessed with their customer support then? I've cancelled 4 preorders in the past because when I saw more footage of it, I just realized it wasn't for me from what I initially thought. It was a super easy fast process. Talked to one agent all those cancellations and it was done. No hassle. Also Sony automatically refunds your pre order if the game moves it's date around.

Unless I was a statistical anomaly, I swear you guys just say stuff to push a narrative.

1

u/tiger2205_6 Aug 14 '26

I've also had no issues with the customer support. My account got hacked so I cancelled the charges on my bank app. Then contacted PlayStation to get my account unsuspended. Took like 15 minutes I think and was super easy.

2

u/dixonciderbottom Aug 14 '26

If you haven’t downloaded the game it’s very easy to get a refund from Sony.

Reviews are shit anyway, I’ll review the game myself. IGN can suck a big fat cock.

0

u/VersaSty7e Aug 13 '26

IGN isn’t a real person. Good luck with that.
Try and have a nice day.

- I buy every game. Then I have to give it a 9 or 10. Otherwise I’mmmmm the sucker. Who shoulda waited for a review from someone I vibed with.

2

u/SirSabza Aug 13 '26

Reviewers I vibe with often don't release reviews till weeks after release, because they're playing the game.

So if it's a game I really want, I'm not going to wait for a review. If the games shit, they'll just not get money from me again.

1

u/SirSabza Aug 13 '26

Which platform doesn't take your money when you preorder? Nintendo does, steam does is it just xbox or do they do it too? I don't understand this 'they take your money when you buy it' argument.

Also the only game I can think of that had preorders up before any gameplay was GTA6, a game which was going to sell millions of copies regardless of gameplay anyway.

Also you don't have to contact customer support. Log in on the website, go to purchases, cancel preorder. Don't have to contact anyone.

-1

u/PhatTuna Aug 13 '26

Is that supposed to be a flex? Paying money to receive nothing is cuck behavior.

2

u/SirSabza Aug 13 '26

What are you on about, why would you receive something on a pre order. You ordered it before it came out.

I'm calling out your dumb logic.

1

u/Cruxis87 Aug 14 '26

Paying a deposit for something has existed for decades, before video games were even a concept. Game pre-orders were also just a $10 deposit back when you were pre-ordering physical. It should still be a partial deposit, but that is a lot of extra coding and backend work for no real reason.

1

u/Cruxis87 Aug 14 '26

Amd doing this for games none of us have even seen gameplay for yet?

I would preorder the next FromSoft game right now if they opened it up without even a name and picture available (the switch game doesn't count because fuck Nintendo)

1

u/Ill-Description3096 Aug 14 '26

I haven't played on console in years at this point, but do they require you to preorder months in advance? I have preordered a day before for loads of games.

1

u/24bitNoColor Aug 14 '26

On PC, it doesn't really matter. If I preorder a game now that comes out in a year, I still have 14 days total and 2 hours of game time from the time it releases on to decide if I want to keep it. If not, I get my money back within the same day by just doing like 4 clicks or so.

1

u/HustleWestbrook94 Aug 14 '26

What? It’s super easy to get a refund on pre-orders.😂

1

u/ConclusionBitter155 Aug 14 '26

People give them their money months in advance because sometimes people already know they’re gonna wanna play a game and therefore buy it when they have more disposable income. My friend buys all his games for the year when he gets his tax return because gaming is expensive and it’s easier to get everything you want when you have extra money to spend. Especially for games coming out during the holiday season (where a lot of people are tightest on money) like GTA6.

1

u/PhatTuna Aug 14 '26

The more ppl preorder games (like GTA6), the more content they will cut out and charge extra for as DLC / microtransactions. If they already got your money, they dont need to sell you on anything for the base game.

1

u/ConclusionBitter155 Aug 14 '26

Yeah i’m not disagreeing with you, but most casuals don’t care about that. I feel like you completely glossed over what I said and responded to an argument I never made

1

u/PhatTuna Aug 15 '26

What do you want me to say. You responded to me. Just cuz your friend doesn't care doesnt mean they arent contributing to the problem.

0

u/ConclusionBitter155 Aug 15 '26

You need to work on your reading comprehension man. I’m giving you the pov of people who aren’t chronically online and don’t care about video games beyond it being something to do in their free time. The reality is that most people have way more to worry about outside of gaming and to most people it simply isn’t that deep.

1

u/PhatTuna Aug 15 '26

1

u/Mac4491 Aug 14 '26

If I give them money now…then in 3 months it’s basically free!

1

u/Known-Opportunity428 Aug 13 '26

I preordered Wolverine and then canceled it easily online.

1

u/Tactical_Squishy Aug 14 '26

That's your problem, you are using a PlayStation

0

u/CigarLover Aug 13 '26

I mean this is a good point.

But you know there will be those folks that are, for whatever reason, are just shit with money or perhaps life happens and they won’t be able to buy it day one.

So For those preordering, it just makes sense.

As for reviews?

That’s in itself is an opinion, and I don’t mean the review itself, but the idea of waiting for someone else’s opinion on whether to buy a game.

If you need that, that’s fine.

But let’s not act like it’s REQUIRED.

0

u/FunkHavoc Aug 13 '26

Did you not read the comment you replied to? The people pre ordering months in advance are buying no matter what. If they have the cash now and want to then so be it.

0

u/MotionMaveric Aug 13 '26

I understand your an ops stance but at the same time I can't recall ever preordering a game I wasn't 100 percent sure I was going to buy regardless. Wolverine, Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave, and Castlevania Belmonts Curse I was planning on getting no matter what and most gameplay footage didn't come out till after my preorder. If anything most people preorder as a vote of confidence that the game is gonna be good. I'm speaking strictly for physical cuz I see less of a point to digitally preorder games.

0

u/OctoEight Aug 14 '26

Is the dangerous message that the player likes them and would buy more of their games if they keep making games like it? Cuz thats a good message. Thats how sequels get made. Thats how developers gauge interest.

1

u/PhatTuna Aug 14 '26

When they getting paid for preorders without showing gameplay or much if anything, the message is publishers/devs can do the bare minimum and drones will still pay for it. They could cut half the original content and then charge for it in later DLC since they already got paid.

If less ppl preorder, they will have less incentive to cut out existing content, because they will still need to sell the base game.

1

u/OctoEight Aug 14 '26

You think developers are actively just cutting out content instead of building games with dlc in mind? You cant be serious. If u built dlc into most games main games they would feel like bloat. If valhalla launched with god of war ragnorak people would think its weird asf that thats the end of the game. Same with spiderman 1 dlc. Plenty of dlc now adays is built with the ending of the game in mind and then adding extra story points through dlc. Combining them to the main game would be to the games detriment. Imagine if you had to do sable side missions and photobombs in the base game where in that game could u fit the dlc story and not make it feel out of place as hell? Spiderman dlc only works well assuming u finished the game and are roaming around after looking for shit to do.

1

u/PhatTuna Aug 15 '26

Of course they are. It's not just missions and levels (Destiny absolutely did this). But stuff like skins too.

13

u/lawdreekers Aug 13 '26

I agree with you on established IPs. Like I know I'm going to enjoy wolverine. No question, no need for reviews

But then there's games like cyberpunk that are promising the world and under deliver. Thankfully cd projekt red actually cared to fix cyberpunk, but it still left a sour taste in a lot of mouths on release

7

u/Soulblade32 Aug 13 '26

Thats fair, but also there were a ton of worrying signs about Cyber Punk to begin with and everyone was giving refunds for it too. I had it on ps5, and was given a full refund.

If the game is genuinely broken then refunds are given, and in the case of Cyber Punk, reviewers weren't even allowed to release their reviews until release day. So day 1 purchasers couldn't have been saved regardless.

But I do understand the sentiment in that situation.

1

u/lawdreekers Aug 13 '26

Unless you're dumb like me and buy cyberpunk, not be able to play on ps4 (I already said I'm dumb) and then forgetting to get a refund in time 😂😭

0

u/NewManufacturer4252 Aug 13 '26

genuinely broken

Is doing a lot of heavy lifting there

8

u/TheEuphoricTribble Aug 13 '26

The Witcher 3 did a lot of the same, no one remembered that when Cyberpunk 2077 released. And it was only in the state it was in based on reputation on consoles. PC was fine. Not great, I’ll give that much, but fine.

People are going to forget Cyberpunk when The Witcher 4 releases in that same state. Then W4 with CP Orion drops. If they want the game they will come.

1

u/Cruxis87 Aug 14 '26

Starfield as well. People that loved FO3, or Skyrim, were excited for FO4. That ended up being a terrible game (and now people are revising history about it like what the star wars community have done with the prequels). Then for some reason, people were excited for Fallout 76. That was even worse, and at one point was considered one the worst game of all time. Did people learn? Nope. Starfield comes along, people are hyped, and are then surprised at how bad it is. And I would bet everything that I have, people are going to be hyped for elder scrolls 6, and it's going to be another pile of shit to add to the pile of Bethesda games.

0

u/Promature Aug 13 '26

Doubt it since W4 is using Unreal instead of their proprietary engine, which they cited as part of the issue with the launch state of their games.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

2

u/Promature Aug 13 '26

Less so as time goes on. That’s another benefit of the engine. Problems other games encounter get remedied and become more easily addressed in future games or nonexistent.

1

u/Knickers1978 Aug 13 '26

Depends if the devs pay attention to optimising the game right. There have been quite a few games on Unreal Engine 5 that have had no issues at all.

4

u/geaux124 Aug 13 '26

That used to be true but is becoming less true by the day. I'm sure a lot of people said "I know I'm gong to love Dragon Age!" or "I know I'm going to love the next Halo" just to name a few.

1

u/lawdreekers Aug 13 '26

Ya got me there. I didn't pre-order but I definitely got hit by the new dragon age disappointment

1

u/Rafnork Aug 13 '26

Wolverine is an established game ip?

3

u/lawdreekers Aug 13 '26

Nah poorly worded on my part. Marvel is an established ip and insomniac did a phenomenal job with the spider man games (in my opinion)

2

u/Primerius Aug 13 '26

It’s a game made by Insomniac, set in the same universe as their Spider-Man games, so like the commenter you are responding to, I would consider it part of the same IP as well.

1

u/BigJohn4077 Aug 13 '26

And Insomniac's stuff is polished. Half of these companies get pre-orders on games that aren't polished for 3 months after release, if even then. They just like locking people in for a "you pay beta" until they finally get around to fixing their shit. My favorite is the early access bs which they charge for, especially when it's loaded with bugs. Of course, with zero accountability.

1

u/lawdreekers Aug 13 '26

Meanwhile, if the game is good, people don't necessarily mind paying for the beta. Palworld is the example I'm thinking of

1

u/24bitNoColor Aug 14 '26

I agree with you on established IPs. Like I know I'm going to enjoy wolverine. No question, no need for reviews

On PC, Spiderman 2 had a lot of technical issues that Spiderman 1 didn't have. You can never be sure that a game actually runs ok when it releases. Honestly, you can never be sure if gameplay that looks fun in videos is really good in practice. Wolverine wouldn't be the first example of a popular studio suddenly dropping the ball on a new game that should be right up their ball park.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '26

Yeah but why buy a product you don’t even get to have why not just wait day one pre ordering is bad cause once they have your money they don’t have to make the game any better they can even release the game in a broken bad state and not think twice about it cause you already gave them your money

Consumer gotta realize they have the power in their pockets

1

u/CigarLover Aug 13 '26

Also, not sure if others are like this, but I love pre buying services too. It gives me ease of Mind, especially when I travel.

u/JonnyTN Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26

I always picture these posts made by kids who are peanut butter and jealous.

But partially sad for them as they are usually a kid that really didn't have the funds to get the game day one, will probably get the game spoiled for them and they really want to play day one

Pre order culture solidifies unpolished releases, i get why OP is 'mad'. Would've been fun to see the faces of people who pre-ordered jedi survivor thinking it was gonna be great. Unfortunately the game being good is not enough for the experience to be good

It's wild to me that people think that they can dictate what is right and wrong about preordering. It's just fucking preorders. Who cares if someone preorders that's their money and they already plan on playing the game day one anyways. Preordering or not won't change anything or affect anyone.

What wise wisdom, please explain how I'm bootlicking for buying a game 1 day before release as opposed to release day?

You are increasing a companies capital before even receiving the product. Its prime bootlicking. Don’t forget the bottom of the boot too!

Ohhhhh noooooo, I paid $70 a day early! Now surely that's going to contribute to the fall of society! :(
