Asking for the game to improve doesn't mean it's not for you; Mojang releases the same update every year: a tree, a biome, and a creature that almost nobody finds unless they look for it
They hired the guy from Aether but made him a paid resource in Bedrock; the game doesn't improve due to Mojang's sheer laziness
I don’t disagree that Minecraft could be improved, I just find that a lot of people seem to misunderstand what the game is trying to do, and as such end up suggesting ideas that wouldn’t actually add much to the game.
Minecraft is, at the end of the day, a building game. There’s combat, gear progression, survival mechanics, sure, but they are just a means to an end to add limitations and make the building more interesting; to make a gameplay loop out of what is otherwise a voxel-based MS paint.
To that end, new kinds of blocks to build with, new biomes to build in, and more mobs to populate a build or offer new resources are perfectly valid. They aren’t as flashy as a new dimension, sure, but they are meaningful additions.
I guess at the end of the day I’ve just grown kinda jaded with the way people talk about Minecraft. There isn’t zero valid critique of the game, but lot of Minecraft criticism reads to me like people just wishing they were playing terraria instead.
I think people are really underselling what mojang is actually doing right now.
They are basically redoing the entire code for the game from the ground up while maintaining function for each update and keeping it friendly to the modding community.
Minecraft is a tonne of messy spaghetti code that makes it difficult to change antibiotics which is why caves and cliffs fucked them so hard.
These minor updates are little things they add to keep the game fresh while they are basically seeing themselves up for success when they want to start changing big things again.
There is also another important fact, that most minecraft players are still rather young. They don't think about code, they only see that their favorite game is not getting a full bucket of new game changing stuff. Same thing about people yelling about the most grossing game. Mojang is getting small fraction out of it, they are only a tool to somehow sustain years of 'great' microsoft decissions.
Quite large indeed, but it's still not the biggest group. It's still appealing to the youngest groups across multiple generations, and generally there is more of the younger ones from what I saw
It's a mixed bag honestly. And then depends on the meaning of a word 'kids'. Roughly 6-11 yo, then it's propably roblox, however in my country I think minecraft is more popular (like 1/3 of kids this age in the primary school of my younger brother had clothes and backpack with minecraft designs). Yet I can barely imagine a 16 years old who would prefer roblox over mc
tbf a lot more of the playerbase that does complain about minecraft online would tend towards the teen to young adult ages compared to kids that (hopefully) aren't on social media
The game has been out for 15 years and it isn't an MMO, idk why they're still bothering with it anyway, instead of just making a new game. Game is finished and modders make the game more than devs ever did, they should just let it go.
The code of Minecraft is indeed really difficult to work with, I don't doubt that at all, my main point is that they often add junk nobody ever asked for instead of requested content (like more animals, biomes and building blocks, not guns, electricity, nukes and that shit). They should also maybe pay some attention to fixing experience-breaking bugs, especially on Bedrock edition, which they intentionally make harder, less customizable/supported – plus, don't even get me started on denying mod access and milking players through add-ons and other microtransactions.
I am not the kind of person to call Mojang extremely lazy or evil, I understand that they put a lot of effort into the game, but I still feel like they're intentionally leading Minecraft development down a path players don't support, coding difficulties aside.
Nah, I have to heavily disagree . Minecraft is the most highest grossing game of ALL time. There is no excuse why updates are 6+ months apart. There should be montlyh or at least bi monthly updates. It is actually insane how long it takes to add a single biome.
It is in large part because of Microsoft. They push the microtransactions really hard, so that is where development time goes. Mojang really has been rebuilding the codebase for a couple of years to make both platforms run better. For example, just the other day they were able to quadruple the render distance for their paid servers from 12 to 48 because of code fixes and streamlined processes. This has been in their communications for many months, about making certain details and aspects data driven and able to be VERY easily modded. Hell, they even shouted out a specific community member for bringing up a single tiny bug that impacted a lot of aspects that went unnoticed.
I will never understand this mindset. They are under no obligation to keep adding free content to the game. When I was a kid, you bought a game on disc and that was the game you got. If the developer came out with more content, you paid for it. The idea that Mojang owes it to the community to add free content monthly to a game that already has so much content in it already is honestly absurd to me. I am very thankful for getting a bunch of free stuff every 6 months to a year on a game I already paid for
No. They monetize skins, emotes, texture packs, and more. Shit, they monetize mods like the aether now. they CONSTANTLY make money off the game and it's players. In what world should I NOT expect new content from a game that was bought by one of the largest companies on the planet. I refuse to make excuses for this company when there is non to be had.
The only thing I will agree with you on is the Aether. Everything else has nothing to do with the base game you agreed to pay for to get access to the content that was in it. That's like going to Walmart and buying body wash and getting offended they also sell loofahs and didn't give it to you for free. You don't have to buy skins or emotes. And to act like because other people spent their money on skins and emotes that somehow makes you entitled to free content is just ridiculous to me. But we can agree to disagree. Neither of us will change our mind, and this is just a silly conversation on Reddit that won't effect the situation at all. I do hope you have a great day though, may it move along quickly and be free of stress or worry
I disagree with you. I see where you’re coming from but I disagree. Each update they have to make sure it works with not just pc, but console, mobile. They have to make sure each update can run smoothly and have the least amount of bugs, then also updating textures and that blocs or entities work together. And also they don’t want to constantly bombard the players with new stuff. And if you add all of that with a big line of development and line of people it has to go through it takes a long time.
If games like no man's sky did not exist, I would be more willing to agree with you. These devs pump out several content rich dlc a year with maybe 10% of the budget and resources. I just can not excuse the time frame between major updates for a game like minecraft when other far more complex games get far more content for free.
It's not about changing the loop, it's about improving it, just like they changed the Nether, they could add the Aether, improve the End, and anything else
Yes and no to certain extents. A lot of MC fans want the game to completely change their design philosophy and change core parts of the game. Yes some of the updates can be kinda lazy, but fans want too much.
Basically the reason this happens is not laziness, it's because the devs physically cannot do anything else because of Microsoft and Xbox corporate.
They have a list of about 250 things that Minecraft "isn't" or "can't be" or "can't add" and it excludes basically anything. They also had to go through a reported 14 layers of management for any additions. Combine this with no funding and what happens is that there are very few things that passed. What does get passed has to wait a year for management, and then, of the idea isn't too big, then they can get a start on the project.
This is because Xbox's revenue during the age where they acquired a million studios was a very large portion Minecraft. They were losing 64 cents on every dollar they invested.
That company was a mess. Minecraft got no funding because it was funneled to various studios that no one played the games of, despite its size.
The mob vote is typically rigged either way as well. The mob they pick is usually the least interesting one which always seems weird but then for some reason has a specific use in the next update, like the sniffer being released right along with the archeology update.
Ya see I think those people enjoy Minecraft, they just refuse to grow up and understand that minmaxing it is taking away from that original experience feeling they’re craving for
I've had this exact conversation with a friend of mine. What turns me off the most about the game is that it's blocks and I just don't find the design choice engaging.
He argued with me that I must've never tried it with mods (which I have) but for the sake of argument, I asked "Is there a mod that doesn't make it look blocky ? Is the game still about stacking cubes ?".
He gave up after that. That's where my distaste essentially boils down to, I don't want to play glorified Legos.
I guess I wanted to avoid the word "realistic" but that's the best way I can explain my issues with it. If the game looked like, I don't know, GTA but it's building stuff, it would probably be my favourite game.
I just can't get past the core design philosophy of the game and there's really no mod that could change that short of making it an entirely different game.
I don't like Minecraft, I think Vintage Story is much better. But at the end of the day, both games really are just stacking blocks. Vintage Story fixes a lot of the boring parts of Minecraft but it doesn't fix this guy's complaint about it being all blocks.
you do know that modded minecraft is the grandfather of the automation/factory genre? And this is a silly statement, have you played GTNH? Nomifactory? Enigmatica 2 Expert? And so much more. These modpacks are genuinely really amazing.
I still think Minecraft is a masterpiece due to the sheer amount of possibilities it offers, I mean no game has as many multiplayer and single player communities as it and thats because of the Sandbox of it, the multiplayer and mod friendly approach, and just overall hosting it as a great platform for people both gamers and non gamers alike. Its OK that its not for everyone, but I do believe if everyone (at least every gamer) found the right community in it, they would enjoy it. Some of my favorite Minecraft projects are Bedwars on Hypixel (probably my 3rd favorite pvp game ever tbh after Titanfall 2 and SSBU), and recently, Drehmal Apotheosis, a large map that doesnt feel like Minecraft, but more like Skyrim or lther fantasy RPGs
I honestly still don't get the point of the game.
Played the original version and just... okay I can build stuff. Got bored and moved away. Played some Pixelmon with friends and got bored from that and moved away again. Haven't touched the game since XD
Normally I don't mind games that have it, it was more the lack of concrete direction that bored me at the time, felt aimless, nobody could tell me what we should be doing.
"What do we do?"
"Just build something."
"What?"
"Whatever you want."
"And then?"
"You build more."
"... but... what's the point?"
"To build whatever you want!"
Was basically how my friends and I interacted regarding this game.
I suppose that aimlessness is just part of the package deal as an open ended sandbox game. Some people need more direction than that, and that’s fine, different strokes for different folks n all that.
I will say I also sometimes struggle with there being a ‘point’ to the building but I think it helps to think of Minecraft more of a gamified medium of art than a regular video game. All the survival mechanics are just there to turn creating a cool piece of art into a game-like experience with limitations and challenges.
Agreed. To each their own.
Personally I'm not very good at aimlessly building something, I don't have that mind for creating a building, as much as I wish that I did.
Give me a guide or direction and I'll happily go along and build it though.
i want to get into mc bad to understand the hype. I play sandbox games, played random modded lobbies, random Roblox games. But I just don't find the point of playing Minecraft
you just build whatever you want? is there any innate game mechanic to get you to progress towards something? A friend introduced ATM and I found that to be even more pointless unintuitive jargon trying to emulate factorio/satisfactory
Yes, the end goal of Minecraft is ultimately to build what you want. Much of the game’s progression centers on making the resource gathering and construction process more efficient and reliable.
The only thing I’d say you need in order to get into Minecraft is an idea of something you want to build. Doesn’t have to be big, but having some kind of project in mind, a goal to work towards, helps a lot when faced with the admittedly shallow nature of the game’s survival and RPG mechanics. Again, those aren’t really the point of the game, just a means to an end.
This! Like I love building in it. That’s it. My brother on the other hand? Hates it. And that’s totally fine cause he’ll shit talk it (playfully) when I played it and I’d shit talk him back about whatever game he was playing at the time. (Playfully) not every game is meant for everyone. It’s just a fact.

I wish more people were like you and accepted that Minecraft isn’t for you rather than insisting that it try to become something it isn’t.
