I'm convinced the term was hijacked to deflect from the true struggle. like the occupy movement, or how baseless conspiracy theories derail actual cover-ups.

17

u/RealTheBestLadyman Aug 29 '26

That’s exactly what happened. There’s a reason a lot of conservatives now call anything they don’t like woke. They were trained to do so to help delegitimize the word.

2

u/HungryYeastStarter Aug 30 '26

This conversation got weird fast but it's based and I'm here for it.

7

u/BenAdaephonDelat Aug 29 '26

That's exactly what happened. It's also important to note WHO it was stolen from, which is the Black community.

2

u/plzicannothandleyou Aug 29 '26

Yes.

This is a common occurrence and is entirely intentional.

There was a right wing guy who was 100% responsible for a lot of this stuff. His name is completely lost to time, but effectively he directed all of right wing media strategy.

Co-opting words, flooding the airwaves with misinformation. It was all him.

And it wasn’t some talking head. He was a behind the scenes strategist guy, that’s why no one remembers him. I can’t even figure out how to google him.

We knew all about it well over 10 years ago.

u/Pokez Aug 29 '26

Newt Gingrich isn't exactly a well-kept secret. Unfortunately for us all.

1

u/plzicannothandleyou Aug 29 '26

There was another. Newt was the original, but there was some other guy. He was young, fat.

And I’m pretty sure he just did it for the love of the game, I don’t think he much cared about the politics, it was all about just controlling people for the sake of doing it

1

u/AnotherSoulessGinger Aug 29 '26

Frank Luntz is probably who you are thinking of.

2

u/plzicannothandleyou Aug 30 '26

That’s the one, pretty sure.

1

u/rustySQUANCHy Aug 29 '26

It gets to that point where you just have to stop giving a crap what people think and buy things that you want. Why does it matter if someone else is not excited for a game that you are?

11

u/LoamyLoamisLoamy Aug 29 '26

Now being woke is being a psychotic POS.

That says more about you than them. Woke nowadays is just whatever the right disagrees with

Other than pointing out hypocrisy I don't see anyone seriously calling the right woke

2

u/Laq9091 Aug 29 '26

remember when i first heard it on that erika badu album. man how times have changed.

2

u/TheWaywardOak Aug 29 '26

Being woke was close to being a hippy.

Bad comparison IMO. The hippie movement by and large ended up tuning out of society while the people actually trying to do something got murdered by police or the FBI. And then it just got absorbed into mainstream liberal culture. It's got more in common with how woke got co-opted than anything else.

3

u/Wolf111993 Aug 30 '26

Exactly!

The bigots had made a mockery of people's desire for fair and evenly distributed privilege and survivability and flanderized it into meaning you support the chaotic decisions of "super insecure" and "meantally unwell" people and being (or becoming) black, transgender, furry, poor, Islamic or anti-religion and gay.

Wanting to be treated fairly and more affordablity isn't a joke.

1

u/Dramatic-Bluejay- Aug 29 '26

Weaponize the word and use it against them before it gains any real traction.

1

u/Umutuku Aug 29 '26

The people who say that are just drowsy, and grumpy because it's past their bedtime.

1

u/Head_Statistician_38 Aug 30 '26

When you ask someone using the word "woke" what it means they all give you a different definition. If you ask someone the definition of most other words people will give you a similar description.

It is almost like woke doesn't actually mean what most people think it does.

I Googled the definition and it said "Aware of the social injustices in the world"... Okay, well of that is what it means I am woke, and I feel like most people are.

1

u/Queen-Of-Fairies Aug 30 '26

i miss when "woke" was a past-tense verb and not an adjective tbh

1

u/coolhooves420 Aug 31 '26

im actually woke

Even your negative connotation of social justice is heavily influenced by the propaganda against it. Fox News and other right wing media has somewhat poisoned that term for you and you may not even be aware of it.

Social justice is why we have weekends, overtime, unions, women's and colored voting rights, and many other things we all tend to take for granted. They were in-fact clawed from the clutches of the rich and powerful by people fighting for social justice.

3

u/Dangerous_Serve_4454 Aug 29 '26

And then you have the conspiracy ret*rds like this that always default to "muh government" "muh illuminati" thinking because let's just blame the highest easily identifiable power structure instead of understanding anything.

Companies and even individuals atp have a PROFIT INCENTIVE to trigger your emotions because of the way they make money from media. It's not even a secret at this point, this is 100% the reason and mix that with us being even more anti-social and less community oriented and you have today's algorithm attention-domination based existence that makes everyone hate themselves and hate everyone else.

2

u/Decloudo Aug 29 '26

Why is it always propaganda and not people being addicted to media and drama?

People choose to consume that.

They pull out the phone, install the app, open the app, and scroll and scroll away.

Same with turning on the tv, or what channel.

This is not something done to people, its something done by people.

1

u/Decloudo Aug 29 '26

Im not that well versed in memes, can you translate that?

1

u/SequentiaIFarts Aug 29 '26

“not sure about that one bud”

1

u/Decloudo Aug 29 '26

Thanks.

I may have put that too one sided.

Im not saying propaganda doesnt exist and that people in power dont utilize it.

I wanted to say that many people are way too careless on their media consumption (and fact checking).

There will always be people who are ready to use their power to sway others for personal gain, but ...we could also resist that sway a bit more.

Information is widely available, but people seem often lead more by emotions and identity/ideology.

And drama, so much drama.

1

u/SequentiaIFarts Aug 29 '26

very fair and nuanced point

i just find that when the attacks come from all sides (politics, fast food, social media, sedentary jobs) it gets real difficult for a person to act reasonably. theres a great heap of studies showing humans make many choices without thinking about future consequences, only immediate friction. doubly so when stressed.

1

u/Decloudo Aug 29 '26

Thats why I keep social media to a minimum. Its can be straight up ...dangerous.

Its also social cause a lot of people use it, so there is a bit more agency in that then people admit to. Its a "place" people intently go to.

Fast food too, people choose to eat that against other options.

Regarding sedentary jobs, well... Those exist cause the need exists. Cause of what we want others to do, supply or manage. If you want insurance, someone needs to sit infront of a pc and manage that. Same with banking, shipping, shopping (online too), webdesign, programming/apps... etc. pp.

I mean how else would this work?

If we want to have it easy/fast/cheap, someone else needs to do the work for that.

And we are those people. Everything we use and consume needs to be designed, made, managed, etc. pp.

People working as "workers" for their own consumption as "consumers".

So I dont see how this could run any other way, cause we run it like that.

2

u/Skidda24 Aug 29 '26

I just don't think it is that deep when we are talking about gaming. Reddit and other social media sites tend to be extremely judgemental.

2

u/GreatMovesKeepItUp69 Aug 29 '26

It's not some super cabal doing some evil genius plan from inside a mountain. People are inherently tribal and divisive unless it's specifically hammered out of them from a young age. The difference nowadays is that people are getting tribal and divisive with words on the Internet about video games and stupid superhero movies instead of slaughtering each other for territory. If you look at human history, this is a massive improvement, not a downgrade.

It seems like nowadays its not only conservatives who appeal to a mythic past, it's left leaning people as well. The past SUCKED please look into what things were actually like back then it was not rainbows and sunshine.

1

u/OneBigRed Aug 30 '26

The worst of tribality used to be saved for sports fandom. The part where you think your team can do nothing wrong, and other teams are losers.

Now many people use the same approach to just about anything they come across in public discourse. Pick a side, denigrate everyone who picked differently, circle jerk with the other ubermensch who picked the same side as you. No matter if it’s a video game, movie, public figure, real life conflict, or (worst of all) politics in general.

1

u/Azarsra_production Aug 29 '26

Also internet. If this didn't exist, we'd be way happy, although most likely more ignorant.

1

u/DrPoopyPantsJr Aug 29 '26

Nah it’s human nature. Certain demographics of people have always been this way. It’s just the internet exacerbates it and throws it in your face 24/7.

1

u/bluehulk900 Aug 29 '26

At least people are seriously waking up to this shit now. Being a conspiracy theorist is no longer something that requires a tinfoil hat and social ostracization.
