I haven't read the Krakoa comics myself, but I kind of hate it conceptually. Even before learning about any of the bad things they did, I never liked the idea. Cause like, yeah lets just take the minority allegory group and turn them into an ethnostate, that sounds like a good idea
Too bad the story very quickly became borderline Zionist apologia. I’d say Krakoa aged like milk but it was rotten the minute it hit shelves.
And it doesn’t matter that it’s “the point” that they were awful and you weren’t supposed to root for them, not only was it still handled offensively with a very Americentric view of paradise with horrifically unfortunate implications for the groups the X-Men are meant to stand in for, but many authors and fans DID root for the, and played into it sincerely.
Some People are stupid and without any empathy. What are you gonna do, when even things really the nose fly over their heads.
I know it can feel shitty when characters you know and love are depicted that way, but I have known people that turned to be like that in real life. You are allowed not to like them. Fuck, I would say its bordeline mandatory. But when a storytelling does something revolting doesn't automatically makes it bad.
To be fair it seems like half the stories are about how yea this is a terrible idea and beyond messy. How much that was intended is a different question.
I see this ethnostate comment a lot and it feels so devoid of context in order to make a bigger impact. Like it seems like we forget that the world hates them and tries to murder them every 3 business days for just existing.
When it was only a school or at its worst, a rundown building they had to hide in that housed and sheltered groups of mutants, that was apparently fine. Live in squalor and always look over your shoulder, that's cool.
Get an island that houses 100x that amount of mutants and give them a high quality of life and shelter away from society that never wanted them around? Nah, we can't stand for that.
The Krakoa run wasn't perfect, I can recognize that. But we should never fault a group for wanting to move away from their attackers.
Krakoa being a place where minorities can be safe isn't the problem, them making that place an ethnostate is what makes it bad. You can have a place where you're safe without it being an ethnostate. They literally had portals that only worked if you were a mutant
Humans are allowed on Krakoa the exact same way non wakandans are allowed in wakanda. Guest, political official, family etc. Are we only calling krakoa an ethnostate or does wakanda get to skirt that label for doing it even longer than krakoa has been around?
And that's the problem with this ethnostate label. They're doing the exact same thing they've been doing when they only had a beat up hotel to hide in. Do you call that an ethno-building? Ethno-motel? Wheres the line for ethnostate, 100, 1000, 10k people?
Also every country in the world has border checkpoints you have to go through. Just because krakoa had one thats way better than others doesn't mean anything negative about them. You think America or Wakanda wouldn't do this if they had the technology?
I don't like those examples either, I am in fact very pro immigrant. I'm an American, and it pisses me off to see Americans being anti-immigration. Krakoa's borders being "way better" does in fact make it negative, as the thing that makes it "way better" is specifically that it excludes people that are not their desired group to a near absolute degree
also an ethnostate isn't about the number of people, its them being their own nation. Having your own hotel doesn't make it an ethnostate adjacent thing because its still in a country. It kind of, y'know, lacks the state part
