I haven't seen anyone comment on this, but Ukraine's level of intelligence over Russia is impressive. Given that they know the base he commands, Varpakhovich is relatively easy to find. But they got a gunman within relatively short range of him and took several shots.

At this point, Russian generals are going to require armed escorts just to travel within their own borders.

It's not new either. We've seen several assassinations carried out by what appear to be Ukrainian intelligence. Such as when Mikhail Shatsky, a Russian cruise missile engineer, was shot.

To say nothing of the assets on the ground needed for Operation Spiderweb.

They need armed escorts just to stand near a window.

They can't trust the armed escorts not to push them out the window.

Armed escorts on planes aren’t much help either - Viktorovich Prigozhin.

Russia was unwise to invade a country, let alone one that who knows and understands them so well. They once invaded Afghanistan but back then the USA was an ally worth having so the Afghans won.

They're not going to live long enough to retire, sooner or latter they're going to get shot. If they want to live, then start opposing Putin.

I think the method is the giveaway. From the article -

shot twice by an unknown assailant on a motorbike

If Putin wanted to make an obvious example of Varpakhovich, he'd find some corruption charges and send him to prison. If Putin wanted Varpakhovich gone quietly, it would look like an accident (or a death in battle).

A shooter on a motorbike is too obviously an assassination; Putin would not go for any death that could even seem like an attempt by Ukrainians.

Lastly,

Moscow confirmed a Russian serviceman was admitted to hospital in Engels without providing further information.

Not to take away from the Ukrainians' actions, but if Putin wanted Varpakhovich dead, he'd be dead (or at least disappeared).
