Not quite true, Ukraine is extremely valuable real estate. Ukraine’s farmland and resource extraction industries will be making their economy go gang buster once the wars over (for whoever controls that area)

Economic reasons are unlikely the deciding factor on why Russia went to war. It's probably more related to Ukraines desire to be more in western block rather than under the Russian sphere of influence. And the prosperity that shift would bring Ukraine as Russia night then actually explain to their citizens and neighbours how everyone leaving their side is doing much better

Failing autocracies always need an external enemy to blame. Putin uses romantic WWII nationalism to hold onto power and has plainly stated his intent is to re-conquer the extents of the Russian/Soviet empire.

Exactly, same script different time. We are seeing it now with Trump’s Iran war, saw it earlier in both Iraq and Iran. Funny thing is that it usually backfires on them eventually. But not before a whole lot of pain, suffering and death 😩

I remember seeing a video where a foreign policy expert explained that Russia has an ingrained desire to close its historical points of weakness. Ukraine is such a point - wide, open land. If it comes with resources that would otherwise be used to end Europes dependence on Russia - all the better

Lithium isn't rare in any definition really. The demand has increased and it takes some time before mining can adjust to this demand. There's plenty of projects around the world on going and Ukraine is nothing special on that front really. There's no point in going to war over it, as there are much easier ways to get lithium.

Yes, the US and Europe wants those resources. The chips in Russian rockets and drones are ironically coming from those countries. China purchases Western consumer goods. And sells the chips to Russia, who uses them in their weapons. China can't produce those chips (yet). And Russia is lagging even more in the chip production industry.

Yes, but Ukraine doesn’t have large proven quantities. Just some small amounts and then areas they suspect have more. There would have to be a lot done to mine and then develop that industry. Russia can’t really utilize REMs on its own right now.

There's also a level of sunk-cost fallacy at play. A three-day operation and a four-year war have very different costs, and when weighed against the potential economic gains, one might be worth it and the other not. They made a huge mistake they simply can't walk back from. Had they known Ukraine would be such a tough nut to crack, they probably would have stuck to little green men in the east.

Except this is not true. American who spent a decade living between Russia and Germany. West grossly overestimates their standard of living relative to rest of the world. Maybe it was that way in 1990. Certainly not now. Should also say I lived in South korea and found quality of life to be higher there than in Europe as well.

Yes finally. And to add, NATO has spent years trying and succeeding to influence all of the buffer zones/countries between Western Europe and Russia. Russia has consistently said it would see it as an act of war if Ukraine joined NATO.

NATO doesn’t invade or take over countries - it’s a defensive alliance. Nations choose to join NATO for protection against countries like Russia and to prevent military conflicts with their neighbors.

Let me be explicitly clear, I do not support in any way Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. I’m simply repeating what has been stated for decades re Ukraine joining NATO. Someone below said that NATO doesn’t invade countries - correct; there are countless ways that have been used to get countries into NATO. Imo it doesn’t need a hard sell to move across to a democratic alliance but there have been lots of direct “inducements”. Ofc Russia is its own enemy…Finland asked to join NATO as soon as Russia invaded Ukraine.

At least that was the idea.

Now, with all the destruction, mines, unexploded ordinance, etc. It's going to take a while to clean up, before they can even start rebuilding and reaping what's there.

Keep in mind Russia thought this war would be a quick win for them. Even JD Vance and others thought Ukraine didn't have much of a chance and needed to give up.

All of that is an added benefit, but Putin views Ukraine and all former Soviet countries as lost Russian territory to be regained. The fall of the USSR and loss of Russian power and influence across Europe and Asia is an embarassment he cannot live with.

We’re talking about Russia here, largest country on earth, with vast amount of land and natural resources. Russia has over 2million square kilometres of farmland, 3 times the size of entire Ukraine.

Ukraine is one of the worlds ‘bread baskets’, has tons of rare earth minerals, and oil. While you’re not wrong that Russia has tons of undeveloped land a plenty of natural resources due to is size, a whole lot of it is very difficult to develop and/or extremely remote.However, Russia can’t produce food on the same scale, even when accounting for the size difference.

+ direct access to Poland, Romania, etc… (basically the EU market). And a larger access to Black sea. It really worth it for russia. They know it because it was a same country during USSR. They remember what they loss very well.

Russia is already the biggest country on earth with a small population vs size. It already has almost unlimited resources. Putin has been willing to kill 500k of his own people so far and seriously injure another million as well as wreck Russias economy. Putin only ever had one reason to attack Ukraine and that is his own fat ego, like Trump or any other of the worlds dictators.
