Will Wyre and his X-Men become the Marauders or something like that? Also, Magnus is lying, he abandoned his students before lol.

That abandoning students line, Xavier catching strays right after Magneto's heart-to-heart with his inner Chuck

I do wish Fantastic Four #18 was out today too so we could see how Magneto recovered and the end of that mission. And I am on the fence about Wyre and the 3K X-Men just leaving (same with Astra and Joseph). I do believe we need more villains for the X-Men to fight, but I don't think Wyre is especially compelling so far, and Astra and Joseph in particular should meet their end here with Magneto recovered. Thematically it just works better. Still, I am somewhat curious what will become of these villains. I assume Wyre and the 3K X-Men will end up being some kind of Marauders/Nasty Boys-esque faction. Astra and Joseph, maybe they team up with Sugar Man or maybe they end up being a villain for Magneto deal with.

Scott chaining Ben Liu to the space station. That felt maybe a little too ruthlessly utilitarian of him. I do think he is going to survive DNX, Scott that is. But I also think he's losing the faith of the team. Ben is not going to be happy about it, as even though he activated his powers, he would have failed and died had Magneto not shown up. Magneto is probably not entirely thrilled with Scott's choice, and Magik wasn't too happy either. Not to mention he's called in Crimson Commando and ONE, who will assuredly stab the X-Men in the back, and Chairman Beast got the drop on them with Juniper.

Art was fine this issue, there wasn't as much action in this one, and you can tell Vicentini was a bit stretched to finish the event on time as some faces are a little weird. But on the whole I like his art.

Definitely think this is going to pay off the “catastrophic burnout” thread they’ve been seeding across all of Scott’s everything since FtA began…with Jean coming back because Scott has a breakdown after one of the Hanks dies.

Good issue, but I wish the transition between the FF fixing Magneto from the inside and Magneto being cured and deployed on the battlefield had been smoother. I feel like a couple of extra pages would have made the narrative flow better.

A bit weird that F4 18 is listed as after this in the reading order, only even releasing in two weeks. Heck, there's even a box that says "see F4 17-18". I get that you don't need to be strictly chronological, but here it comes off as awkward.

u/jethawkings 3d ago

I'm guessing FF 18 might have spoilers on what the reveal here would be?

5

u/TowelSilver318 3d ago

Maybe, but at least it should've released at the same time.

the amount of titles coming out twice monthly for Marvel is kinda nuts so I can see how hard it would be to crunch that schedule but then again those are the few titles I am following from them so I sort of get it.

Good issue. Moved things forward. I expected Ben to have a more character-defining moment, but I guess this is cool too. Shame that Magneto's and Ben's relationship hasn't had more panel time before this event. The consequences of Cyclops' actions will be interesting.

Desperate times, desperate measures. Scott really got his hands full there with what to do. At least one of those decisions, with Bohannan, gonna come back to bite them, I can see it.

Well Magneto is finally up and about and ready to use his powers again, though I guess we still have to wait until FF 18 to see what was hidden in Magneto that will lead to a cure. I guess they skipped Iron Man's involvement in it in the future where he sent back the info about a cure to himself in the past. So I wonder if they decided to change that to 'just have it be inside Magneto instead'.

This was a good escalation issue of sorts. You knew the X-Virus was going to get unleashed at some point. It's not on the same scale as Age of Revelation just yet. But it still has the potential to be.

But I think the main point of drama in this issue revolved around Cyclops. I see a lot of people are already scrutinizing his tactics and rightfully so. Reading through this issue, I get the sense he's letting the memories and trauma from his experience in Age of Revelation show. He knows what happens once that virus gets unleashed. He knows the future they're trying to avoid better than anyone on the team because he experienced it directly. And I think what he did with Ben shows that's affecting his judgement. It usually takes a lot to shake Cyclops from his tactical leadership mindset. But this is definitley one of them.

However this plays out, he's going to face scrutiny from his team and everyone else. I think McKay is setting it up so that he's really going to need Jean's presence. Because at this point, he's letting bad (future) memories affect him more than he's letting on.

Feels like one of the big contributing factors to why Scott might not be leader after this is what he done to Ben this issue.

9

u/TowelSilver318 3d ago

There's also intentionally involving O.N.E., especially given events in the main comic (which to be fair, Scott is still unaware of). They probably could've involved themselves anyway, but if something goes sideways with them it'll be seen as his fault.

I'll admit that I've had another possible theory, ever since the Jean Grey comic was announced, which only seems stronger with the implication that he won't remain the leader, which is that I'm not sure Scott survives. It seems to fit as an explanation for that comic hapenning as well as other hints we have at post-DNX events. This might be a long shot, but it may have even been kind of forshadowed when Scott used the question of "what happens if I'm killed?" as a threat.

u/BiDiTi 3d ago

I think Scott’s out as leader after this arc, but I don’t think he’ll be dead.

This issue looks we’re on pace for some catastrophic Cyclops burnout, right here.

8

u/Classic-Ad4883 3d ago

Another great crossover issue

Excellent character moments for all involved and cyclops decisions regarding Ben is probably why the team is probably ok with him taking a back seat or leaving the team

I think that moment with magik proves it as it’s something she will do but doesn’t like it that Scott thought of it first

It’s nice to see magneto return though I wished his solo issue could’ve set it up better

u/cmcdonald22 Multiple Man 3d ago

So i'm guessing the "cure" or stop to the X-Virus is going to be something coded to Hank's DNA specifically, and reset beast will have to try to sacrifice himself in some way to stop it, and then either will or we'll get the swerve of Scott some how getting the Chairman to do it involuntarily or some such.

u/OkSuggestion1722 3d ago

Does the timing work in this story? How slow motion is this crash exactly? Slow enough for Ben and Johnny to get to the Baxter building, get mini-fied with the other 2 of the FF, enter Magneto's body, lose their minds somehow, fight each other for a bit, have Sue put mini force fields in their brains, and then do whatever happens in FF#18 in time for Mags to show up and save the day. All while the saucer is in the process of crashing?

3

u/Terrible-Issue-4910 Egg 3d ago

Wyre specified the engines were going to turn off slowly. I figure it's because he had to retrieve his team and get out himself so he didn't want a quick landing.

2

u/OkSuggestion1722 3d ago

The issue does say "slow". But to me "slow" means "on the order of minutes", and the required events would seem to take on the order of days.

5

u/Terrible-Issue-4910 Egg 3d ago

Yeah, I don't think the FF adventure takes more than an hour. It might be barely 20 minutes.

  • I dig Vincentini's art on the Chairman in the opening pages before he teleports away - he gives him a nicely bug eyed look of outright mania that's framed well by his glasses, even if the eye colour is all wrong. Sometimes I'm willing to let these art drifts pass if they look good enough.
  • There's such a hot and cold affect to Scott's voice in this exchange that really does make it kinda read like he might be on the verge of fraying apart emotionally. It's subtle, but Scott calling someone a bastard and using ?! is actually fairly severe from him.
  • Belt mounted teleporter is smart. I like to think the Chairman learned his lesson after being gutted and killed by Wolverine/X-Force enough times.
  • That it was Wyre and not the Chairman to set the cloud base on a collision course with Philadelphia is interesting and very consistent with his characterisation. He's not against massive casualties, so long as they're in aid of something - he has no interest in going out of his way to kill a load of civilians to make a point, he wants more mutants, so it'd be wasteful to just crash the base. Wyre, though, has no such compunctions.
  • Interesting that Bohannon was, seemingly, already in Philadelphia when Scott puts in the call, since he can see the falling base from his window. Fast response, or something more?
  • Scott is INCREDIBLY cruel to Ben here, outright admitting that if he didn't think Ben was useful he would have cut him loose months ago and then proceeding to force the guy's powers to manifest through some real sink or swim tactics. This is some extremely Utopia era Scott, and, you know what? I kinda love that MacKay is doing what Fraction so often failed to do, which is portray this kind of behaviour as extremely harsh and, in all likelihood, unnecessary and cruel, because sometimes that's what happens when it's the only way you respond. If all you have is a hammer, etc.
  • So, the X-Men have Nova in custody, eh? Interesting. And from the sounds of it, Myriad is who Psylocke is going to be taking on 1-on-1 in X-Men #40. I wonder if Cobb is going for Nova, since she's attached herself to Cassandra as a mentor figure?
  • Wyre and the remaining 3K X-Men are totally gonna become Sugar Man's replacement Earth agents, calling it now. He needs a new group now that the Upstarts have been definitively taken off the board.
  • They advise that, if you're picking up DNX #5 and Jean Grey #1, that you read DNX first. Interesting.
  • "There had to be a kinder way." Magik calling back to the conversation she had with Beast pre-DNX, where she told Hank that he and her have a bond, that they understand their worst potential - in a way that Scott maybe doesn't. He isn't limiting himself in the way that Hank and Illyana are, and it's going to blow up in his face, I think. "We never get to do things the kinder way" - bet.
  • "We can stop the X-Virus." I assume stop the spread, but not reverse it, which is a nice little half-victory.

Overall, good issue, though I very much hope we get a lot more Chairman in issue 4. For the main villain of the piece, he's actually not gotten to do or say very much yet, and if we're heading into a climactic showdown, we kinda need to give a fuck.

u/friday126 3d ago

Not bad overall. "Wire" is a pretty lame villain. Like he would have been a Cable villain in the 90s who gets killed in the same issue he appears in.

The statue things was dumb writing (with execution). They had a WHOLE issue about it- as in- a weird statue pops up surrounded by a force field, that looks like someone who genocided mutants before... and... let's not worry about it? Yeah we'll handle it later. Totally not a mad scientist plot point. Hell, someone could have just likely teleported it to space in 5 seconds.

Damn I hope someone kills bad Hank by the end of this. Utopia era Scott would have hunted down 3k long before this happened. Miss that guy.

12

u/lepton_neutrino 3d ago

They only became aware of the statue for one day.

13

u/TowelSilver318 3d ago

It's also one of those things that's far more obvious in the context of knowing there's a 4th wall. They did try to deal with it, but once it became clear that wouldn't be easy, they had bigger priorities. From their perspective, the connection to said priority is only  obvious in hindsight. Also, as far as I can tell, they did try to take every opportunity to stop 3K earlier, they just really didn't have many.

u/friday126 2h ago

Magik, who can teleport the thing into space WAS RIGHT THERE, pick up Cain. They needed it to remain there for plot purposes. Better writing would have had Dark/white Beast just NOT put the thing he's trying to be sneaky about in a mysterious statue with a forcefield around it.

1

u/friday126 2h ago

That's plenty of time for a team with their resources to deal with it. Magik was standing in front of it who could just teleport it to space. Or hell.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Bar_844 3d ago

Would you compare the space station magik teleported in x of swords as bigger ??

2

u/okayactual Vulcan 3d ago

Magik also was part of a mutant circuit at that point no?

1

u/swoozes 3d ago

ehhh, it's comics, varying degrees of "How much power" every hero has is at the whims of the writer in any given moment.

3

u/ForteanRhymes Beak 3d ago

I'm going to say it: Scott did nothing wrong.

u/CuddleFishEye Kid Omega 3d ago

I didn't want to believe it, but not only did Cyclops actually chain Ben into the crashing spaceship to stress-force activate Ben's powers into stopping the ship, but Scott couldn't even show happiness for Ben finally using his powers like Magik, just dissapointment that Ben's powers werent enough.

SCOTT SUMMERS SHOULDNT BE LEADER OF THE XMEN
