r/officechairs is under attack by spam artists. How we go after them next is going to be partly up to you.

Very good epp in last weeks WSJ podcast about Reddit subs and the prevalence of brands spamming subs as a way to sneak brand content into LLMs.

https://www.wsj.com/podcasts/the-journal/ai-loves-reddit-but-redditors-arent-so-sure/5695c5e0-5ee6-41e6-97fa-ac04fde0c5f4

It's happening here and we are not controlling it as well as we would like to.

Years ago it was Autonomous, we banned them for a while, engaged with them and they have been respectful of the community standards for years now.  Some brands participate here with this sub while also being respectful of the rediqute and the rules, think Steelcase, Anthros or Musso.

Now, it feels like we see quite a bit of content about Libornovo, Secretlab and ProtoArc.  Regularly, multiple accounts and posts, but similar kinds of content being inserted into the sub.

This raises questions to me.  Our r/officechairs team has been leading this sub for about 6 years.  This last 2 years, the amount of slop / promotional content has been off the charts.

When we stated moding here, u/classroom and u/cranda58 and I were able to keep up with the spam and the self promotion to a minimum. Now even with more people on the team plus the auto-mod functionality, we are just not able to keep up with it all.

Today, spammers have become very sophisticated.  It's much harder to see what is bot / spam content and its both very cheap and potentially very profitable for them to attack this sub with their slop of nonsense.

What are brands you notice that seem to be over represented here lately?

How aggressive do you want this sub to be moderated?

There were 800 posts and 6300 comments in the last 30 days.  Normally, the mod team will not see all of the posts and only a small fraction of comments, so if your goal is to slip some slop into the LLMs, it can be done quietly.

The nuclear option would be for us to require new posts to be affirmatively approved by a mod before they hit the sub.  One of us would really see if there were 50 Libornova posts every week and act accordingly.  It would be a more curated sub but it would also be more resistant to marketers efforts.  A less aggressive option would be to use mod tools to pause mentions of those brands that we suspect are being the most aggressive lately while engaging them to make sure their future communications here are within the bounds.

If you want to see what un-moderated looks like, my social experiment r/officechairsIsell is based on the idea that if you give folks the ability to post whatever they want, a chairs sub will become garbage.

Its our sub to use so please, what do you, the subscribers want to see us doing about this problem that is impacting the quality of what we have here?

Thrift Find - Steelcase Leap V2 $15

Spotted this Leap V2 right before closing on Thursday. I was already pretty content with a K1 Impress chair I thrifted several months ago for $25, so I actually walked away and left it behind.

Slept on it, changed my mind, and sent my wife first thing Friday morning to grab it. Wild twist: it was originally marked at $20, but my daughter’s girlfriend had pulled the tag earlier and decided against buying it. When they put it back out on the floor Friday, they repriced it down to $15!

It took some serious deep cleaning on the upholstery, and it has the usual minor scuffs plus a missing tension knob cap, but mechanically it works like a charm. Can’t complain about a $15 Leap V2.

We will see if I like it more than the K1.

I've been using an ikea wooden chair with a cushion, scouring marketplace and second hand shops for "the deal" and I finally found it! $12 for a Herman Miller Aeron, I'm pretty sure. I'm geekin'.

I posted earlier asking for recommendations for a budget chair. To my surprise, a Steelcase Leap V2 popped up on FB Marketplace today…

I checked it out. It felt comfortable, supportive, and I’m amazed at the various adjustments it offers.

I purchased this for $275

Feels like a good investment to me. There’s some wear on the armrests but nothing terrible.

Did I get a decent deal? (whats done is done, just curious)

Finally, here’s a pic of the totally ergonomic chair I was using the past 6 years…

Any opinions would help alot thanks.

Chair recs? I’m working for it

Hi office chair community! Before you jump to say ahhhh a boring recommendation post at least hear my reasonings… let me plead my case:

As of September 2026 I have been a university student, within that same month I was diagnosed with CRPS in my arms. I can’t type or write or do much of anything these days due to my pain, I was an avid gamer and have had to stop playing for over a year now. I have worked my ass off to get into one of the most competitive schools and into a program I truly love at the age of 26 (late bloomer!!). I have overcome a lot in my life and my next challenge is finding a damn good comfy chair so my arms can feel some comfort and I can work on these assignments and make my family proud 🥲

I have pain that starts in the shoulder, wrists, forearm, elbow so finding a nice arm rest would be truly life changing, just the smallest bits of relief make such a difference for me.

My school pays up to $600 for the chair

I’d like something with adjustable height, good arm rests, and good back support. I also really love when I can tilt the chair back. I previously had a DX racer (I’m sorry gaming chair 😭 ) and liked the height and that it rocked back.

Available in Canada

Need a chair for WFH setup + casual gaming

My only need is a tilt lock mechanism because sometimes I tend to lean and rest on reading or even sleeping so it needs a good head support and lumbar support is necessary because of my WFH + gaming setup.

My pick was Greensoul Jupiter Pro, but read some reviews and it is suggested to never go to greensoul.

So please suggest some good or better options, my budget is around these only but can extend a little further too.

Shaq Maximos chair making weird noises? (Video clip in post)

Hey guys! I bought the Shaq Maximos office chair about two months ago and the chair was great until about a few days ago. I noticed when I sit in the chair, it makes this weird crunching noise (like you can hear in the video) every time I sit in it. It just started a few days ago and since it started, I noticed my tailbone and glutes starting to feel sore after sitting in the chair.

I’m around 280lbs and the chair is rated for 400lbs, so I can’t imagine my big back managed to bottom out the cushion after only 2 months but I’m at a loss as to what this sound could be and why my bottom now hurts out of nowhere. I should also say that the first thing I checked was all the hardware on the seat plate, arms, etc. to make sure everything was secure and it all is and it still makes that noise.

Any help or ideas will be much appreciated, thanks!

Herman Miller Setu or Mirra

Hey all,

I’m looking for a new chair and am debating between a Herman Miller Setu and a Mirra. On average, I spend about 2 to 3 hours a day at my desk. Is the investment in a Mirra worth it for that amount of time, or is the Setu good enough for my use case?

Noticed this about my Leap V2 chairs, is this normal?

I have 3 Steelcase Leap V2s, and I noticed that one is different. One on the right has a different hydrolic, while the one on the left (and another one I own). The only difference is the one on the right is leather. (One on the left and not pictured are fabric). It's not an age thing because the one on the right and the other not pictured are newer (have QR Codes) while the one on the left does not. Do some V2s just have different hydrolics or are they broken? Thank you!

I'm 6 1 male and on the larger side, after some research the Steelcase Leap V2 seems like a solid option, but not a chance i can afford one new. Does this look like a good deal for a used option?

Selling Titan Evo 2022 (EU) - need ergonomic alternative for lower back pain + casual gaming ($100 extra budget)

Hey guys, I’ve been using a Secretlab Titan Evo 2022 for a while, but the integrated lumbar support just isn't cutting it for me anymore and my lower back is taking a beating during long sessions. Looking to sell it and swap to something better for back health. I need proper lower back support for work, but also something that reclines comfortably when I want to lean back and play console games on my monitor. I'm looking to sell the Titan Evo and add no more than $100/€100 extra out of pocket for the new chair (open to second-hand or budget ergonomic options). Any recommendations that hit that sweet spot between posture support and relaxed reclining?

Chair with durable seat?

Hello, asking for some purchase advice here.

I got a Steelcase leap v1 years ago. Chair is really good, but the seat cloth is getting ripped as I change position a lot on the chair, friction from that weakens the fabric.

I already changed seat once when I found a cheap one from second hand. I tried to stick to once position but I cant, now it is breaking again!

Can you recommend a better chair for my use, or what material should I aim for instead? I'm afraid mesh would just rip appart the whole seat. And leather worked well on my previous ikea chair.
