META Building a Better r/bettafish: Culture, New Mods, and a Look Ahead
Hey everyone, Roboto, your friendly neighborhood (actually human) mod here with some subreddit updates!
First, the least fun part in all of this –
We need to talk about our subreddit culture.
Our community is toxic. There’s no other way I can think of to describe what has been happening. Even worse, this reputation extends beyond our immediate community into other subreddits and even other platforms. People are afraid of us.
I’m going to take some ownership of this. The harsh reputation of this subreddit far precedes me as a mod, but in recent years, our hard-fought progress on this front has been lost. That’s on me. The lack of consistent moderation here has let rules 1 and 2 go under-enforced for too long, allowing hostility to take root as the norm.
The adversarial and unwelcoming environment we’ve collectively created functions in direct opposition to our subreddit goals, and frankly what I believe to be the goals of many users here. If we care about betta fish first and foremost, this culture needs to change.
Our expectations and what better looks like
If you have good advice to give, give it in a more constructive, not destructive, way. Shaming people makes them shut down and disengage so they don't even process the rest of the good advice you have to offer. Don't highlight all the things they're doing wrong, focus on what they can do better and why it's helpful in a way that encourages them to do it.
So instead of saying "your empty tank is sad," share the opportunities for improvement, like "betta fish benefit from tanks with lots of plants and hiding/resting places so your fish would be happier if you filled the tank in a bit more."
We can’t ignore that people will think they're doing research by going and talking to presumed experts or reading product information. Store employees are presumed to be properly trained and products marketed at bettas are assumed to know what they’re talking about, too. It doesn't help that there's very little consensus online about what adequate care even is. For example, Petco's online betta care guide, updated in 2025, says bettas need a minimum of 1gal. Furthermore, many quality care guides are on niche websites that may not seem credible to a new hobbyist compared to a well-known chain.
With that in mind, we all need to stop:
- Telling people they should have done more research
- Immediately calling people abusers for making mistakes
- Shaming the pineapple (or any other novelty decor/bowl)
- Attacking aesthetic choices instead of addressing actual care needs
- Debating what it means to rescue a betta on posts where ethical sourcing of fish isn’t the main topic
Going forward, comments exhibiting the behaviors listed above will be removed as violations of rules 1, 2, or 4 depending on the exact nature of the comment.
I know members of our subreddit are burned out from the bad husbandry they see constantly. It's exhausting and I won't pretend it's not. But if we bully one owner into submission, cool, that's maybe one fish saved. How many owners did we scare away from asking for help in the process? We're going to have a far broader impact building people up in this hobby, not tearing them down.
That said, this is a two-way street of support. I'm cognizant of the fact that people offer their time and mental energy supporting our subreddit, and they don't deserve to have that wasted by people who don't care to use it. If someone is given better information and advice and refuses to take it, that violates rule 3. We often get reports about all the fighting around ignored advice, but not the ignoring itself. In the future, please report these instances to us. For this to be successful, we also need users to avoid escalating disagreements when OP refuses valid and respectful advice.
Now for the fun stuff –
New mods
We recently brought on 12 additional mods to enable us to better support this community’s needs. Please help us welcome:

They’re going to introduce themselves in the comments below and I’ll try and link their names in this post as they do.
It takes a bit to get 12 brand new people to operate as a consistent group, so we may occasionally over-moderate while everyone learns.
I realize that our increased emphasis on subreddit culture may make removals feel arbitrary at times. In the spirit of transparency, I have given the new moderators the guidance that if a senior mod isn’t free to give timely feedback, when in doubt, they should remove posts/comments that are believed to violate rules. Senior mods will still review the content in question, and removals may be reversed, if necessary.
If you disagree with a moderator’s decision, please send us a modmail and one of the senior mods will review your concern and get back to you.
Updated tools and resources
Small updates at this time, but more exciting things in the pipeline!
- We’ve begun a major revision of the subreddit wiki. Some of our work in progress pages are already live, with more to come.
- Select pages are also now linked in the subreddit sidebar to streamline access to key information for new betta fish keepers.
- In the next few weeks, we will be rolling out additional tools that should make it easier to share information that we often find ourselves repeating. Our hope is that this will help address some of the burnout we see many of you all experiencing.
Roboto is a super sentimental actual human
I realize this post started on a challenging topic, but despite the highs and lows our community faces, I remain grateful that I get to do this with you all.
I’ve been a mod of this community for nearly 7 years, and a member for far longer. In that time, so many things, from our mod team, to Reddit as a platform, to our own lives and the world around us, have become fundamentally different.
There are very few constants I can point to after all this time, but the enduring engagement and passion of this community is one of them and I’m honored to steward this space.
At the core of it all, this hobby, and this subreddit, are comprised of people who really want the best for one another and that makes this work so much easier.
Thank you all, sincerely, for riding with us as we figure this thing out. I’m excited for the next chapter of our subreddit, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together in the next 7 years.
- Roboto
Edit: If anyone has additional feedback about our community culture, please share it in a comment below, or feel free to send us a modmail.

- How long the issue has been occurring
- A picture of the problem
- Any additional helpful context
Click this link to view our CARESHEET
🐟 Caresheet Summary:
- Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
- Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
- Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
- Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
- Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
- Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
- Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

RIP Goodbye my sweet Pixie
This is Pixie, he’s mine and my sister’s fish. The first betta we’ve had since we were children. We got him nearly two years ago, not long after I had to have my dog put to sleep. I immediately developed a strong connection with him. He was such a silly little guy, and brought so much joy over these last couple years. My heart hurts so much knowing that I’ll never see him dancing around his tank ever again, or tucking himself into his leaves. I just wanted to share how loved he is. Sleep well my Pixie Stix 🧚💞

Transformation Swanson’s 6 month update
Pictures are when I first got him, 2 weeks later and now. His fins seem to still be growing but thankfully he’s feisty so doesn’t let them hold him back. Some of his new fin growth is coming in orange which scared me at first but after some research I’m pretty sure he just has marble genes.
I’m curious if he might have been a reject from an alien line due to his very metallic appearance but regardless of what he is I love my colour shifting little grump 💕

Introducing My beautiful boy, Milo!
I’ve had a shrimp tank for a while, and I love my little sea bugs with all of my heart, but I felt like something else was due. After a few months of planning, researching, cycling, and preparing, I’ve finally gotten my betta! A week in and he’s already doing well!
I’m absolutely in LOVE with not only him but bettas in general!! I’ve been fixated on the species for a while and have been wanting to get one for such a long time. Unfortunately the last time I’d had a betta was when I was a kid and not fully equipped with the knowledge of what goes into proper fish care. Now though, I feel confident enough that I can give Milo a good, prosperous life.
I will say when people said plakats are more active than those with longer tails, I wasn’t expecting such a big difference between the two. 😭 That boy can and DOES move; he flies through that tank like he’s got somewhere to be. It’s very entertaining to watch!

Help Beginner
So I work at Petsmart, and i rescued a sick betta we had, and decided to keep him. I don’t know much about bettas other than basics, and signs of distress. But i need some extra advice on the best way to care for this sweet boy.
I know he doesn’t have the nicest tank, and i have cats so i cannot have an open lid on the tank. But i made sure to get a filter, a heater, and real plants- i tried to not get painted decor either. I’ve been using a stress enzyme to help and this one leaf i think is called Tannin to help heal the fin rot he had. he looks way better and happier now but i still want to know as much as possible to help this guy live his best life. i’m moving in a few months so i plan to get a 10 gallon instead of the 3 gallon (11.3in x 17.5in) one i have now, since i dont have space for a bigger tank. this was his tank the day i took him home after letting the tank cycle for a week and having him in a small recovery tank my roommate had laying around for her fish. Hes currently on a pellet/ blood worm diet. I’m very new to fish in general, i’ve never worked with them before or had one really. I don’t trust any AI or google search because i prefer actual people telling me. Any advice would help!

Full Tank Shot First time making a proper betta tank
Ive never made a tank before, ive owned bettas before however i was like 10 and wasnt aware of how many requirements i needed to hit, im 20 now and i researched a lot and put a bunch of money time and effort into this. I just maybe wanted tips or maybe even advice to make this better and to keep my plants from dying.
This tank is a 5galled rimless cube and there is a sponge filter and heater in there but no fish yet because im cycling.
My mother got my younger sister a betta and its sitting in a 2.5gal tank currently with petsmarts plastic plants and dyed neon gravel with a small filter and a heater that i put in to make his time a little better while this tank cycles
The betta is a dragonscaled male betta and im determined to give him a better life!

Help have i made a huge mistake? cycling questions
ok, for context, i have owned a betta before and she was perfect and lived for about 3 years before she got dropsy and died, and while i owned her i really tried my best to make sure she was having the happiest life possible, including getting a 5 gallon tank just for herself. however i was a broke college student and couldn’t afford some things so my 19 year old brain said ehhhh let’s just go without.
i’m 27 now and i missed having a betta so much that i bought the tank and with my adult money and adult time i am now able to afford real fish care and tbh there are many more resources now than there was just a few years ago so i know a lot of what i was missing my first time around. for example i have some nice driftwood that is getting some tannins into the water, and also these are my first live plants that i’ve been able to have.
now here is where i may have made my mistake. i saw this lovely tiny little girl betta at petco who was just so washed out and so sad in her little cup, and i figured since i was getting the tank ready for her anyway i would just take her home and put her in a temporary holding situation to recover a bit from the cup until her tank was ready (i’ve put a heater and a little moss hideaway for her so she won’t get overwhelmed by movement or light). i know you’re not supposed to get the fish before your tank is ready but it was just so depressing to see her fading away motionless in her cup that i thought i could do her at least a little better.
however her tank cycling is going quite slowly and i’ve been having to do 25%-50% water changes daily in her temporary tank because her ammonia levels have been consistently at around .25ppm. which is fine, i don’t mind doing the water changes, but honestly it’s been stressing me out so much to think of her suffering even a little bit that i’ve literally been having dreams about her ammonia levels being wayyyyyy in the red and her dying which would be devastating for me.
(that being said she does look in excellent health, much better than when she was in the cup, but still.)
my reasoning was that even if she couldn’t be in the tank, her temporary holding tank would be far better for her than the tiny cup. but when i test and see that .25ppm i feel just horrible. i’ve been testing the big tank too (has a filter by the way) and no ammonia is forming at all and it’s been like a week even though i’ve been ghostfeeding consistently.
my question: should i just try and start an in-fish cycle and just put her in the big tank? i have been doing daily changes every day either way for her temporary tank and i’m wondering if it would be better for her to just go into the big one so that at least the ppm won’t be so high? when i read about in-fish cycling i literally feel like i’m doing that already…
a note: i do take note of her behavior every day and she seems to be acting like a healthy betta—she’ll chill sometimes, float around analyzing things sometimes, and she’s always responsive if she sees movement on the outside of the tank, and is eating well (though i am only doing a tiny bit of food so that her ammonia levels don’t go up).
i’m not completely new to this sub or owning a betta but i am honestly still new to the hobby as a capable adult so any advice would be welcomed! i just want her to be happy!

Identification is my betta a female?
I bought a betta, Kitty, who is currently in a holding tank (different than the pic) while I finish cycling his aquascaped 10gal. He changed colors rapidly. Only thing… I’m starting to think Kitty is a girl. His fins have looked the exact same and ain’t nothing changed but his color 🤣😭 Any input?

Discussion Betta Rescue
Went to the store to get stuff for my dog and saw this guy…poor lil bastard was floating on his side in gnarly water. I have 2 other Bettas and a smaller 6.5 gal tank that had a bunch of Neo shrimp. Ended up spending all morning rescaping my shrimp tank to house a long finned betta. He spent a few hours in a bowl with fresh conditioned water (shallow). I’m hoping he makes it because he’s absolutely gorgeous. What are things you guys have done to rescues?

Name Suggestions Name suggestions for purple veil tailed betta !
Boyfriend found someone trying to rehome some bettas from a breeder which is why the tank is smaller than ideal. He loves fish so naturally he asked if I wanted one and I fell in love with this pretty guy. I know this one is technically a boy but I’ve been calling her she, so any name suggestions are welcome (my boyfriend thinks I should name her after a type of prescription animal medicine eyedrop so really….any at all)

Discussion New to betta fish care, advice?
I have gotten really interested in aquariums and betta fish specifically. Now wanting to begin a new tank for a betta fish, I'm not fully sure on what supplies and brands to buy from.
Recommendations and suggestions of reliable brands to buy supplies from would be really appreciated, thank you !!!!
