Discussion The idea behind it is worth checking out
John Stanier’s set up was more insightful than I initially gave credit… and I’ve just had some better gigs with the idea behind it…
Sure this is an extreme example but from what I understand there was an intent to make something harder to play so that it was a more deliberate choice and therefore ideally a more musical choice.
Its helped.
You could say probably the same for Kenny Aronoff and his 10” tom placement.
So I do love a splash cymbal. They’ve always been on my kit. The thing is.. they become almost like a tick for me. They lose their value cause I get to hit a thing that doesn’t intrude like a crash so I hit them too much.
And cause of their size you can position them in the most easy to reach place.
Well I wanted to down size hardware and so inverting them and putting them on top of crashes has put them a bit more out of reach. There is far more intent to reach for them an play them.. damn it, it really works….
This of course isn’t as dramatic, but the idea is worth checking out…
You got a thing you know you overplay? Put it a bit more out of reach.
EDIT: Apparently I write like AI. FWIW I wrote this, I didn't use Chatgpt, they are my thoughts. I'm not sure what you can say to counter anyone's belief this is ai. I didn't think I'd get my writing style pulled apart in a drum forum. But here we are. fun times. But its good to know though that highest rated comments can be complete bollocks. Worth remembering when in any other forum.
