Rewatch Shiki Rewatch [Halloween 2026] - Episode 9 Discussion
Once I decide on a treatment, I'll ask for help.
Episode 9: Coffin: Ninth Coffin
← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →
Information:
MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB
Legal Streams:
Unfortunately, there are currently no places to stream Shiki legally. As such, you'll have to look into alternate methods.
This is my clinic. I will not allow you to enter without permission.
Questions of the Day:
1) Why do you think the vampires have been instructed not to attack Toshio yet?
2) Why did the man from Seishin's novel murder his little brother?
Screenshot of the Day:
Fanart of the Day:
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events, no matter how much you want to, unless you're doing it underneath spoiler tags. This especially includes any teases or hints such as "You aren't ready for X episode" or "I'm super excited for X character"; you got that? Don't spoil anything for the first-timers; that's rude!
Nice to finally meet you, Dr. Ozaki.

Despite my apprehension about it turning into a prototypical vampire flick, I gotta say this episode was pretty dope. That window scene was chef’s kiss. It was so good, in fact, that it’s making me talk like a Gen-Z’er. I like that the doc is developing some big balls.
I like the lore around vampires needing an invitation to be let in the house. Explains why they need those possessed by them to let them in, so they can go HAM on the other residents. Except the doctor didn’t figure out that the old lady in the hospital will be the one giving permission.
Though this does give a very practical solution to all of the problems. Superglue. Superglue the mouths of those bitten.
3
u/mischievous_shota 1d ago
It would also explain why family members of the sick can also fall in rapid succession. Once they're in, they might as well get everyone.
Except the doctor didn’t figure out that the old lady in the hospital will be the one giving permission.
She didn't. I think it was Kyoko who gave permission to enter the clinic. We see Tatsumi met her earlier in the episode. Setsuko wouldn't have authority to invite them to the clinic.

And since she was only there because his mom tricked her into coming, it's really his mother's fault

Dang, I didn't track that. I don't know why we have to introduce Kyoko into the picture, the mother would certainly have invited her in. Perhaps the mother, as a guest, can't invite anybody.

His mother strikes me as too proud and haughty to fall for Tatsumi's schmoozing. She'd probably just tell him to get a job there if he wants access to the clinic so badly.

First timer
Seishin tells Toshio about the novel he's writing. I know the MC looks closer to Natsuno but it's obvious it's autobiographical. We haven't been introduced to a sibling of his yet. I wonder if the man killing his younger brother is about his suicide attempt.
October 1st, Senbu - Toshio is certain the okiagari will come to the clinic. Says they probably don't drain the victim in one go, which would explain the duration of illness. Shock happens on second attack, cardiac arrest on the fourth.
October 2nd, Butsumetsu - Yasumori Setsuko's condition is stable.
Toshio is married to a hottie. Her hairstyle doesn't disappoint. She knew her mother-in-law was lying about Toshio asking to closer her store and come back but did it anyway. She may not have been at home but she clearly cares about him. Kyoko and Takae's back and forth was amusing too.
Ritsuko is a really caring person to get Toshio snacks. She spots Nao.
Setsuko-san gets creepy declaring she's there to Nao .
October 3rd, Taian - Setsuko doesn't remember events exactly but feels like she had a dream about encountering Nao. Dead daughter-in-laws can be scary.
Octobber 4th, Shakku - Midnight - The hypnosis didn't wear off. It's not just Nao that came this time.
Tatsumi is able to enter and take Toshio down.
He must have used Kyoko to get permission when he visited earlier.
Found family feeding time.
QOTD -
Why do you think the vampires have been instructed not to attack Toshio yet?
I can see the usefulness of having a local clinic to direct patients to instead of the local hospital where it's more likely the increasing number of deaths will get noticed but I don't get why they didn't just hypnotise him. Setsuko-san's case already shows hypnosis can last a long time even without feeding.

Muroi hasn't directly commented on it, but he did muse to himself that it's possible he wasn't really trying to die when Sunako points out that he slit his wrists the wrong direction

Hypnosis may last a while (maybe even forever whenever the specific vampire that bit you shows up?), but it looks like it may not be able to control a victim's whole day routine. If the doctor gets incapacitated, even if he's still alive, that's the same as there being no doctor in the clinic, and victims get sent to external hospitals.
3
u/mischievous_shota 21h ago
Isn't that happening after several feedings? I wonder how hypnosis would affect victims if they weren't also being bled dry.
3
u/BosuW 21h ago
The victims were all visibly lethargic even after only one bite. Though you're right that could be the initial bloodloss adding to it. Is it even possible for the vampires to restrain themselves to only bite to hypnotize and not feed at all?
3
u/mischievous_shota 21h ago
Is biting even necessary for them to hypnotise? Toshio suggested they might be injecting narcotics or such into their bloodstream but he was just speculating.

So Seishin is definitely writing inspired by Cain and Abel right? I have to admit, despite being raised a Catholic, I'm actually not very familiar with that story.
Once again I love Toshio trying to define the vampire phenomenon in medical and biological parameters.
Hmmm... 5/Ojou-sama. With the redhead nurse, that makes a whole ojou-sama hair! Or something like that...
D-did Toshio's mom's hair just twitch!? Lmao. Fuck the vampires, we got some real ghastly shit right here! Who let Junji Ito in the animator's room!?
It's really good writing how much this scene tells us about Toshio's family life. Mainly, that he doesn't have any. It's a bit perplexing that the thought doesn't ocurr earlier, considering his character has been entirely defined by his job so far. But he has a wife, obviously an arranged marriage. Actually they seem to get along decently, as well as one can, considering. They're not intimate at all. They just try to appease Toshio's mom and not get in each other's way.
It's actually pretty funny how the traditionalist mom takes issue with Kyouko showing do much leg. The generational gap is showing haha. Sign of the times.
[Shiki]"There must be something wrong in that family." Yeah, Nao. Oof 🥀🥀.
What is Seishin reading? I thought it was a Bible, but a quick Google search for "Japanese Bible" doesn't match the kanji. I recognize the second one from left to right, it means "blood". Just what book is it?
Well Doctor, there's your physical proof...
Also, I guess they fly now!
There's something so enthralling about everything to do with Nao and the vampires and Setsuko's recuperation and murder this episode that I find difficult to put into words. It's like the way the vampires and their nature and activities are presented has changed. There's still the element of fear of course. From Toshio, Seishin, and Ritsuko's perspective they still have that otherworldly aura, like you're not sure if you're seeing a ghost, or if your memory, grief and exhaustion are playing a bad joke on you (and of course FUCK THE CLINIC IS UNDER AN ORGANIZED SIEGE). But that's the thing, there's also an element of sorrow. Like you let them into your house not just because of the hypnosis, but because there's a part of you that genuinely wants to see them again.
It is often said in vampire stories that for them drinking blood is an intimate act. Recently that is mostly used for erotic purposes (shout-out to Vanitas no Carte). Or maybe not so recently if what I hear about Carmilla is true. But the way Shiki is appropriating that aspect of the monster to talk about grief and sadness is fucking genius. The combination is deadly. I didn't know why when Setsuko woke up under hypnosis the second time calling for Nao my eyes got wet.
[Shiki]Yep there's the Shiki we know and love and fear. I'm remembering why I don't rewatch this show that often, aside from time. I'm gonna get crushed again aren't I?
Also, indisputable shot of the day for me. The red dots are each bite and each pair of eyes! Their stares in the night are wounds! This is horror cinema 🖐️😨🤚!
Yet another Eau de Vie ending! 9/10 with a streak of five in a row. They can't keep getting away with this can they?
Questions of the Day
1- Maybe it'd look too suspicious if the only doctor in town suddenly started doing only night shifts. That is of he revives or cooperates at all.

u/Star4ce https://anilist.co/user/Star4ce 1d ago

The dynamic is amazing and I like Kyouko quite a bit already.
Like you let them into your house not just because of the hypnosis, but because there's a part of you that genuinely wants to see them again.
Yeah, I love that Shiki doesn't let this detail go away. Chances are that Setsuko might have even let Nao in even with full control of her senses.
It also keeps the hope up that maybe some of them also want to find a better solution than feeding and killing. They all seem very hypnotised themselves, additionally to their new unlife.

Masao's initiation suggest they simply get peer pressured. Though perhaps there are some who plan sabotage privately.

The first time we saw this, it absolutely was. This time, it feels like he's jumbled things up a bit but that might just be artistic license.
What is Seishin reading?
So...obviously, the Catholic church has a ton of scholarly work on post Jesus things written up and some would have been translated. While the cross does lean me to Jesus, the "Blood of Abel" might be a relevant piece of research for Seishin.

Oh yeah. Definitely it just gave him the starting idea and he wrote his own thing from there, rather then being a retelling.

It's interesting how much the story shows Seishin's interest in Christian mythology and theology but never outright says it.

I have some questions about the mangaka because it feels like Seishin has far more Christian mythos in him than you would expect.

Something about vampires.
But he has a wife, obviously an arranged marriage.
I hadn't considered it. I kind of doubt it given how his mother would clearly be unhappy having her as a daughter-in-law. In any case, it seems clear that she does care for him, even if their marriage is not conventional.

It's a book about vampires. The Kanji at the end 系話 is weird and I couldn't find a real word for it. But the kanji you recognized is part of kyuuketsuki.
It says something like, Types/Nature/Rulesets of Vampires, is my best translation of it. But there could be some wordplay.
I spent way to long trying to read that.

Please tell me the literal translation of kyuuketsuki is "bloodsucker".

That makes it even funnier that it looks like some sort of publication officially endorsed by the Catholic Church. Like it's some sort of official vampire hunting guide lol

When one of the main characters is so overworked we only meet his wife on episode 9. He seems to enjoy more his buddy monk company, however. It is fun how we are still meting new characters.
I like that the older nurse rocks some black socks on her free time, Guess she enjoys looking extra pretty sometimes.
Nice hospital scene. Today the nice cat boy was not so nice.
It was fin checking the whole Vampires need somebody to invite them in as a rewatcher
- Why do you think the vampires have been instructed not to attack Toshio yet?
If they send the sick directly to a bigger hospital it would be a problem for them? Or maybe they are just sadistic
- Why did the man from Seishin's novel murder his little brother?

Shiki – First Timer
(1/2)
Okay, the bad week is mostly over. But my car now also needs repairs since a part apparently is dangerously degrading and is getting recalled...
But you get more art from me, isn’t that nice? I took quite a while fixing the sketch since this perspective is kinda new to me and the eyes never looked quite right.
God, taking the time to lose myself in drawing felt soo good!
Shiki Ep.09 – Ninth Coffin
Oooh, we get „Shiki“ book lore! It’s a bit like the King Midas story, right? Mmh, maybe more like a permanent monkey’s paw, since Midas wished for his ability.
But I do see the parallels to Natsuno even beyond the visual similarity. He’s trying to do right and get to the bottom of things, but that constantly puts a target on his back. Or maybe that’s a parallel to any of them?
Anyway, look at how she slays! Seriously, I don’t get it. Maybe it’s my loner ass, but thinking back on when I was 14-18 I’d go with Megumi either dead or alive. (These will be reference pics for future sketches.) Also, this one. And this one. This, too.
May… I be towards Megumi like she is towards Natsuno?
I love how Ozaki is already deducting the physical and biological properties of vampires. They say the difference between a killer and a good surgeon is precision and Ozaki is definitely filling that clichée here, haha.
I think this is the first time we see Ritsuko’s hair in full right? Damn, girl.
Oh my Gooood, we finally get real hair styles back in this show! Ah and her hair even twitches when she’s annoyed. I see, this is turning the mood back into comedy a bit, but I very much welcome it. (I think I have to call everyone by first names by now, considering there’ several full families here...)
In any case, I hope Toshio can deal with the fallout from dissing his mom in front of his wife. That was absolutely savage and let me tell you that from now on I wish for more Toshio x Kyouko screentime! poke, poke
I was hoping we could leave Ritsuko alone. Luckily I got it, for now, but man, they do know how to make me worry. They really do their atmosphere so well. I love every one of these scenes!
Though, it’s a bit weird that Nao has white in her eyes here. It’s another fascinating shot, but I’m curious what the whole-black, black-red and white-black mode separates.
But honestly, the flock feeding at the end of today’s episode is especially creepy. It seems to me like the hunger isn’t the only thing having control over the new vampires. Even Megumi, one of the first of the new ones, seems quite out of character. Masao got a taste of Tatsumi’s rough threats, so probably Megumi, too. But beyond that, raw threats won’t do much alone. I think the older vampires can also have control over the lesser ones like they all can hypnotise humans.
Also, did we just last episode introduce a threat that kills Natsuno’s family and then fast forward 2 days without solving what happened? That’s harsh on the cliffhanger-senses.
1) Why do you think the vampires have been instructed not to attack Toshio yet?
It’s stumping me, too. It might be strategy. To turn the most competent ones last to integrate them for moving away, maybe?
Or they are special in that they have some sort of protection. It’s either a religiously sacred charm, or something very personal. If the home is sacred and can’t be entered without invitation, maybe the afterlife/life functions similarly. Where if someone has wishes from their loved ones still lingering, they are safe. That would explain why Megumi’s gift is a ward against them. It was from Kaori, who is still alive, for Megumi.
2) Why did the man from Seishin's novel murder his little brother?
Hot take: He didn’t. Either he intentionally wanted to murder him and bet on the action being inversed, like everything else, or he actually wanted to do something compassionate, but it got turned into murder by the curse.

Shiki Ep.08 – Eigth Night
The little discussion from last time under my post about a materialistic view of vampires vs. a religious/belief-based one is unnervingly taken up today, too. It is interesting to think about what value one puts on life. Both in a numeric sense, like the number of years, the time spent working, the things created, the effort expended, the resources used, etc., and also the assigned sense, like the morals upheld, beliefs held, religion spread, etc.
If it comes down to it, and forgive me for being so insufferably scientific here, both views come down to measuring casue and effect. The main difference that I make is rather simple. The former can be measured, the latter cannot or underlies a non-uniform definition.
To now judge over the value of a Vampire and how to deal with it is mainly dependend on the consequences of letting it be, changing its behaviour, or ending its existence. I’ll make it short: Since all things aim at a measurable change in outcome, the materialistic view pretty much always wins out.
The little trick here is that any assigned view, at the moment of acting on it, becomes partially a materialistic consequence. „If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences“, is the Thomas theorem.
So, if a Vampire hunter in the name of God were to target the Vampire because they believe human flesh to be sacred and letting creatures forsaken by God hurt it would violate the world God created, then that is precisely a reality. Not God themselves. Just the consequence. Therefore, Vampires are evil demons who need to be slaughtered to preserve the work of God.
The funny thing is, under the same religion I could set up another view that says sharing the labour of God with those unfortunate to not have it would heal them and bring them into God’s light. Therefore, vampires shall be offered the flesh, so they can come closer to God and see their light.
As long as only the consequences can be delivered, any belief is valid given enough power to act on it. If a belief’s cause can be delivered and proven, it ceases to be belief and instead becomes materialistic fact.
So, all a believer has to do is deliver proof that the mere existence of a Vampire, no matter what it actually is doing, is a continuous detriment to the universe. Anything outside of that can theoretically be optimised to come to a balance.
Which is a long-winded way of saying that picking materialist over spiritualist is always better in Stellaris.
(The Psi-armies and shroud stuff is pretty cool, though, I gotta admit…)
Okay but back to Shiki. How Muroi treats Sunako is such a delight to see. I think he already suspects her true nature, given he talked with Ozaki about vampires already, but he’s still coming at it with compassion. I tend to take the inverted consequence from the Thomas theorem usually. If I want something to become real, I have to believe it and act on it. Maybe Muroi is a bit the same?
If so, I’m looking forward to the struggle of trying to convince Sunako of changing her way, if that’s possible. Or, maybe sadly more likely, the two are complete opposites in theme. Where Muroi holds the beliefs of an innate spiritual bond and Sunako one of innate isolation, making them completely incompatible and irreconcilable.
Kaori, what the hell? You’re not helping!
(I know Akira gave her a reason, but the image is still funny) This could be a comment face like the José meme. Anyway, interesting that Tatsumi, presumably, would leave the gift just laying there? Neither Megumi taking it nor disposing of it. Since the guy got briefly stunned by it, we might have working charms against them.
I very much appreciate the sound design of the shovel hitting. It’s so rare to have the sound guy be given quality tasks like this. I also remember Bulletstorm to have crunchy, satisfyingly bonky sound design that was a blast to cause ingame.
So, throwing that guy back into the grave was pretty badass. Also pretty harsh since we know how waking up in one feels. But still fair. However, they botched the execution hard, dumb kids! If you expect him to maybe wake up, then go through with it and put a few 100kgs of dirt on him so he can’t move. Smh.
Also, look at how pretty she is. Sure, one can be forsaken by the Gods, but I firmly believe that one can outstyle such inconveniences.
The lesson of today is to punch insolent children in their face.
Well, I weep for Natsuno since he is about to lose his entire family. Poor guy better get his killing senses up and running. As an aside, they neatly sneaked in quite a few weaknesses of the vampires. The charms work, they can’t enter a house uninvited (presumably, but that might also have been a quirk of Shizuka), they can get normal physical injuries like concussions even if they heal quickly, and all the stuff Tatsumi said.
I honestly can’t decide which story conflict I like the most, they’re all great! I’m eagerly awaiting for Megumi to confront Natsuno and finalise this frontline in the plot.
1) How would you have handled the vampire that attacked Kaori if you were in the group's place?
Actually properly bury him in the dirt and alert the authorities. (Maybe only Muroi, other people might imprison me immediately or something.)
2) What do you think is up with Shizuka's doll? Do you think there's any symbolism there?
Kid can’t properly mimick the living yet and they would’ve noticed that everything is wrong.

Hmm... Hard to decide if this is a run-on sentence or if "the eyes" act as a second object in reference to "since"

[FMA03] Bitch better know his place.
Does this count as another comment sotd?
If you believe so much in it that it drives you to act, it sure can be.
(I'd probably pick all of the Megumi ones and either Nao floating at the window or the group feeding with effect.)

May… I be towards Megumi like she is towards Natsuno?
Projecting an idealized scenario based on vibes instead of the actual personality? Perhaps...
I think this is the first time we see Ritsuko’s hair in full right? Damn, girl.

Much happens today, but it is also after even more setup/pondering. We meet Tokio's wife Kyouko and see some stuff that probably doesn't register that well to someone who doesn't get Japanese gender politics, especially 90s era stuff. Yes, it is obviously a bit of a weird marriage if Kyouko is off in the city and Toshio is running his country clinic. It even gives you a slight insight into how they may have met, Kyouko might've assumed that Toshio would stay in/around the city and have a higher station job. She runs a store, which I bet would be fashion of some kind, and doesn't seem terribly interested in producing the next heir.
But we get actual information, including a very old staple of the vampire genre:The victim often dreams of the vampire, though there is kind of a range on this. The hypnotism seems to be wearing off, before Tatsumi decides to intervene. We still have precious little info on what is happening but it feels we got somewhere.
QotD:1 The doctor dying could cause actual flight
2 The traditional answer is jealousy

Masao seemed quite aware of what was happening to him, despite not being in control of his body anymore. I think they leave it open to interpretation if that is another ability of the Okiagari, or if it's Setsuko's own attempts to understand what she's seeing taking into account her grief and longing, her relationship to the attacker, and maybe even her personal beliefs.

I would point out that Masao was both younger and attacked first while conscious. But he was also attacked by someone he didn't particularly care for.

Shiki Ep 9
I've been wondering about that blue haired girl in the OP. girl
- Did he give the old lady a transfusion or not?
- This show and hair is like Parakiss and fasion
- I totally thought he was unmarried.
- Okay, I think I can remember Midori's name.
- Uh oh. If Ritsuko is next, that would probably mean Tooru is risen.
- It's Nao!
- Of course she would have invited Nao inside....
- They'll never be free of hold the vampire has on them.
- Ozaki is going super saiyan.
If the humans don't find a weakness soon, they are all fucked.

Did he give the old lady a transfusion or not?
No, he is just trying to keep her under his watch.
I totally thought he was unmarried.
His mother would've made it her life's work to remedy that.
They'll never be free of hold the vampire has on them.
Sort of fits the lore.

Well, Toshio got to have the patented Big "NO!!!" moment, skyward-facing with fists clenched and all. The overall clinic sequence was just a well-executed 'defeat snatched from the jaws of victory' moment; nobody had to be an idiot all of sudden to reach the doomed outcome (I certainly wouldn't blame Kyoko), as the protagonists did their best and were just outwitted while operating from a severely handicapped position both information and number-wise. Heartbreaking scene with Setsuko and Tokujirou, too (poor dude just had to remind us that they literally only had each other at that point, just to rub it in further).
It's very easy to put ourselves in Toshio's frustrated pov, but I do wonder how much our perception of the situation so far would shift if the riser group doesn't have Catboy, who lend the casual arrogance/typical villainish taunting to the side. Certainly Nao was the most sympathetic 'riser' we've seen so far (Megumi has the whole stalker thing going, the two adult dudes just straight up go assaulting people, and Masao... is Masao), with the outcome being kinda framed as a bittersweet reunion with her beloved mother-in-law, especially since it looks like both her husband and child failed to rise.
Kyoko is surprisingly likable for a typical stuck-up wife married for convenience, at least to me. Enjoyed the bantering between the three; added sense of levity to what is an otherwise pretty fucking depressing episode and development.
QoTD 1: I'd skip answering this, but I didn't actually remember why lol. It always annoyed me when the protagonist has obvious plot armor equipped against the bad guys who can just dispose them at the earliest opportunity and have every reason to, so it's good if there's indeed a justifiable reasoning. Then again, Shiki kinda has three interchangeable protagonists thing going, although you can argue that Seishin so far fits the deuteragonist/tritagonist role more than the other two. Speaking of which...
QoTD 2: seems like obvious biblical allusion to me, but it did make me wonder of the parallels to Seishin's IRL situation instead. Despite getting roughly the same screen time, his character and background felt more opaque (in a good way) than Toshio and Yuuki, who were completely open books at this point.

It's gonna fucking suck for Toshio to break the news. He can't even tell him it's not a just a death but a murder by vampires.

It helps that it's obvious both she and Toshio share a dislike for his mother's traditionalist elitism, yet she still came to check up on him even though she knew his mother was lying about him asking for her

1. Why do you think the vampires have been instructed not to attack Toshio yet?
That's curious. Sunako might shield the monk. I can't imagine shielding the doctor. Perhaps some contrived scenario that keeps the outside world from looking too closely.
edit: In Dark Shadows, the 400 year old vampire co-opted the Doctor to possibly find a cure.
2. Why did the man from Seishin's novel murder his little brother?
I'm having trouble with the Monk's stories. Cain killed Abel over jealousy. Could be the same, here. Envy, resentment.
/u/Vaadwaar notes the curse of denying sustainance from the land. But, that was post murder in Genesis. Here, it becomes part of the motivation.
If an analogy doesn't track exactly, then I become uncertain of what is being said.

Just like Barnabas co-opted the main character role after not being in the show for 200 episodes

It's no surprise Kyouko and Toshio's mom don't get along. After all, there's only enough room for one ridiculous hairstyle in this household!
(Well, I say that, but looking at Ritsuko's case, apparently it runs in the family)
Man, it's actually evil for the show to end off last episode on that cliffhanger with Shizuka waiting at Natsuno's house, only for this episode to switch perspectives to Seishin and Toshio and skip over that night! I mean, I actually really like it, very fun suspense (And we'll probably just get back to it next episode), but still, I want to know!
Anyway, the perspective we did get was nevertheless pretty interesting, especially in the implications it leaves off on. I like that even after he went full-force on the vampire idea, Toshio still tries to think through the whole thing scientifically when talking to Seishin. Like, I was cool with "Vampire magic", but yes, that too lol. That perspective also makes for a fun clash with Seishin, who is a bit less enthused about the idea of capturing a vampire and experimenting on them. That was more of a hypothetical then, but it'll be really interesting to see what Seishin's overall thoughts on this end up being now that he's seen the vampires in action, especially given both his more spiritual nature and his relationship with Sunako.
Speaking of Seishin, I'm still not really sure where the connection to his story is going to come in besides the title or why Natsuno is visualized there, but it's still probably important to keep in mind. It does also seem his and Toshio's friendship isn't there by their family's choice, or, well, Toshio's at least, since his mom apparently is not a fan of Seishin's family for having a higher status, but gh how Seishin's family feels on that remains to be seen. Either way, the family dynamics and how they affect them as characters are an interesting detail we bring up here, and into that we also bring in Toshio's wife now. She's pretty fun. Putting aside her obviously contentious relationship with Toshio's mom, the two of them seem pretty cordial, but from what we see and are told, "Married couple" is not exactly how I'd characterize their relationship here either, so some more background there would be nice.
This must have been one hell of a horrifying sight for Seishin. I mean, it'd be horrifying for literally anyone, obviously, but he probably led most of these people's funerals and saw them getting buried as well! So I feel like there's some extra punch to it there. (Side note, can't they like, get the librarian guy some normal clothes lol? I understand Megumi being the only one to continue maximizing her fashion, but surely we can do better than the burial robe smh)
The show does make the vampires very effectively eerie here yet again in general. Love that we see and hear Nao scratching at the shutters before we get her full delightfully unnerving sight. The whole sequence where Ritsuko is going to deliver the sandwiches is also great, and through some fun perspective and the mood the show makes, just walking out there at night feels really tense. Nao goes for the clinic, obviously, but it really did feel like she was about to be bitten there. Oh, and this has to be the most fun cut to commercial break we've had so far. I guess I need to retract saying the vampires don't seem that different in physical ability yesterday as well too lol. Well, outside of Catboy, who is jacked
would still let him turn me into a vampirethey still don't seem abnormally strong at least, but Nao was just sticking to a second-story window there, so they've got some special abilities in that regard. It's interesting that Catboy tells Toshio they don't plan on hurting him yet, by the way. My thought earlier was they don't want people out of the village ecosystem because that makes things harder for them, but the way he puts it, maybe they have something specific in mind for him?
Ultimately, the biggest and most interesting question hanging over this episode is just "Now what?" though. Seishin and Toshio have very directly seen that the vampires are real, and that there are also quite a few of them, at that. And while they don't understand all of their traits, they do know of one preventive measure for them, and by extension of confirming they're vampires, they know people can be saved even after an initial bite. Though I wonder if the vampires might change tactics and go more for group feeding to take people out in one swipe, now that they know Toshio is on to them. Still, singling out Catboy (And maybe the Kirishiki's in general as well, though I'm not sure how aware everyone is that he's with them) should be easy enough now, which should probably be a problem for the vampires when he's their "Sunlight initiator" as it were?
Though I guess Toshio and Seishin need to actually make people believe there are vampires here first, which is probably a good bit harder compared to an epidemic, and might lead to some frustration. Plus, even if they do believe, what then? Outside of prevention, a course of action is probably not going to be easy to decide on, and as this episode made sure to remind you of, plenty of people have family members that are now vampires too! So there's definitely a lot of drama to be had here.
This episode also made it very clear that trying to take this issue on alone is simply not sustainable, though. Even more so considering we've seen twice in a row now that you can get fucked over by the vampires getting access to a place from someone who doesn't know their deal. Though I do wonder if the invitation is like a one-time checkbox or if there's more nuance to it. Like, can you de-invite a vampire lol? Toshio tells Nao he'll never let her in or something to that effect, but could she still get in if she got permission from someone else? Either way, considering that difficulty, hopefully Toshio doesn't just try to totally hide it and take it on himself again at least. It really feels like we're starting to reach a critical boiling point now, so I'm very excited to see how it all plays out!
