Questions for the day:

1) Is Haruhiko close to a mental breakdown?

2) Why Kyoto?

3) Any possiblity that Mokuren will awaken someday?

4) Who is Mikuro and what is his deal?

5) Can we agree that Rin/Shion is really the true antagonist of the entire series?

6) How possible that non-reincarnator espers also do exist?

Highlights from yesterday:

1) Looks like the random boys love context got attention for some of you:

On-screen gay kiss?!

It was just a passionate kiss on the lips between bro, jk jk. No deeper meaning, haha...

Forget gay undertones, it's gone full on gay now.

I'm surprised at the gay storyline, the general feeling about LGTB rights back then was waaay too different, and how they portrait the characters does not help. For the youngsters ones, I would say that they treat it here is more like something that is not natural rather than straight hate. It is good that things have changed a lot but the episode does not work that well if you don't think about this perceptive.

First Time Rewatcher

Episode 5:

Rin is like The Terminator. He's always there, menacingly.

  • Wait, I thought Tamura and Takahashi were going to Tokyo, not Kyoto. Duh I must have misread the line. Of course everybody is in Tokyo. Tokyo Tower.
  • At least Takashi was going to destroy it instead of read it...unexpectedly honorable of him
  • boyslap!
  • What is esper boy up to? Ah.
  • Good old WacDonalds
  • who is that watching takashi? Kaji? Sucks, his family is always spying on him.
  • clever, he got the number from Kaji
  • genkidama
  • too bad he already got Shukaido's password, that would have been pretty ironic.

I must admit, I dont' feel a lot for this "epic" esper battle. It was probably a lot more impressive in 1992.

Only one episode left. I have no idea how it ends, or how much story is actually told in this OVA series. I do know we're missing stuff that I remember from my first watch....

The series is a shoujo, I don't think the battle is the main selling point really. It exist for plot reasons bur I don't think they need it to be that flashy.

3

u/TheDanubianCommunard Aug 19 '26

Shojo and action can coexist, right?

1

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa Aug 20 '26

Then can coexist but in the end you probably give one of them a preference

2

u/TheDanubianCommunard Aug 19 '26

Rin is like The Terminator. He's always there, menacingly.

As expected of an avenger.

I must admit, I dont' feel a lot for this "epic" esper battle. It was probably a lot more impressive in 1992.

Maybe it shows its age.

Only one episode left. I have no idea how it ends, or how much story is actually told in this OVA series. I do know we're missing stuff that I remember from my first watch....

Like skipped chapters?

Episode 5 (first timer)

  • A suicide attempt that is played off as not a suicide attempt – Word of advice: jumping from a high building is way faster and less painful. And if you insist on drowning yourself, try a piece of water that reaches above your knees.
  • “Promise me to destroy that letter unopened” – words to say if you want to guarantee that somebody reads that letter.
  • Begging worked, but Tamura got to read the letter anyway.
  • “I always did think it was kinda sick. You engaged to a little kindergartener …” – based brother.
  • “I am giving you your freedom back”

  • “He takes care of the giraffes”

  • “S”, “M” … none of these kids learned about signing letters?
  • Haru has zero poker face. He is a terrible character to lie to the others and he should stop talking to Rin as much as he can.
  • S vs M.
  • Haru jumping into the bullet’senergy sphere’s way.

For how cocky he was, M sure didn’t do much in that fight.

Is Haruhiko close to a mental breakdown?

Doesn't a suicide attempt count as already having had one?

Why Kyoto?

Important city that is not Tokyo. Also: upper class vibes.

Any possiblity that Mokuren will awaken someday?

Very likely.

Who is Mikuro and what is his deal?

Man in Black?

Can we agree that Rin/Shion is really the true antagonist of the entire series?

Is there anybody else?

2

u/TheDanubianCommunard Aug 19 '26

“Promise me to destroy that letter unopened” – words to say if you want to guarantee that somebody reads that letter.

Promise that hard to keep.

“S”, “M” … none of these kids learned about signing letters?

They love being enigmatic.

Haru has zero poker face. He is a terrible character to lie to the others and he should stop talking to Rin as much as he can.

Maybe he is also messed up thanks to the past and resent events.

u/No_Rex x2 Aug 19 '26

Maybe he is also messed up thanks to the past and resent events.

I mean, being under pressure makes it harder, but that is also when you actually need a poker face.

First timer

  • How does Rin even know that Haruhiko is in the middle of what I assume is the ocean? There's having psychic powers. There's being a Gary Stu. And then there's being omnipotent. The longer the show goes on full the more bs Rin gets.

  • Also, now that he knows his keyword, why does Rin even care at this point what happens to Haruhiko? Even it's because of his convoluted plan to get the keyword from the others, it's not like there's absolutely no other way to get them.

  • The problem with that alteration in his plan is that it fully hinges on none of the others, two of which attend the very same school as her, telling Alice that they met Shion at the exact time that she was suppose to meet him.

  • About that...

  • And I never thought that adults would even entertain the notion of a kid's crush. Yet, here we are.

  • Discount Mcdonald.

  • She literally got engaged to a kid that she believed to be ordinary. If she knew he was actually the one she longed for, she'd say yes in a heart beat. Again, Rin's plan is both dumb and convoluted.

  • Why on earth would Haruhiko think that the one guy who came to steathly warn him was with Rin?

  • Haruhi calls Tamura instead of just teleporting there and getting him out of dodge.

  • Hey, look, he ended up teleporting anyway, eventually. Unfortunately, he collapsed because of his previous heart condition. Speaking of, why does his heart condition affect his ability to use his powers? Any semblance of world building regarding the kids' powers would have been wonderful. Alas.

QotD

  • Probably.

  • Because!

  • Yes. Episode 6.

  • Don't know, and at this point, I don't care.

  • Yes? Not like there's been any other antagonistic forces thus far.

  • In-series? Possible, I guess.

3

u/TheDanubianCommunard Aug 19 '26

Also, now that he knows his keyword, why does Rin even care at this point what happens to Haruhiko? Even it's because of his convoluted plan to get the keyword from the others, it's not like there's absolutely no other way to get them.

For him, he will lose his purpose which means he might let him live.

The problem with that alteration in his plan is that it fully hinges on none of the others, two of which attend the very same school as her, telling Alice that they met Shion at the exact time that she was suppose to meet him.

Does it make sense?

Discount Mcdonald.

Wcdonalds

She literally got engaged to a kid that she believed to be ordinary. If she knew he was actually the one she longed for, she'd say yes in a heart beat. Again, Rin's plan is both dumb and convoluted.

She got fooled by his appearance.

Hey, look, he ended up teleporting anyway, eventually. Unfortunately, he collapsed because of his previous heart condition. Speaking of, why does his heart condition affect his ability to use his powers? Any semblance of world building regarding the kids' powers would have been wonderful. Alas.

It's very logical. Frail heart also affects the body as well and so does the special powers.

2

u/No_Rex x2 Aug 19 '26

There's having psychic powers. There's being a Gary Stu. And then there's being omnipotent. The longer the show goes on full the more bs Rin gets.

These are the cases where I wonder whether the explanation was cut from the adaptation, or never in the manga.

2

u/Silcaria https://myanimelist.net/profile/Silcaria Aug 19 '26

With the difference in score, as well as how much they had to cram in 6 episodes, It'd say it's mostlikely left out of the anime. I don't care to find out though.

2

u/TheDanubianCommunard Aug 19 '26

So a case of a rushed adaptation perhaps?

2

u/No_Rex x2 Aug 19 '26

It is an OVA, no need to rush there. Planned lack of money, maybe, but I'd say they actually made it this was on purpose, targetting the manga readers only.

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ Aug 20 '26

I have a feeling that Rin has some telepathic powers. Not enough to find them out of all the people on Earth, but now that he knows them, he can find them again at any time.

It was definitely a convoluted plan. He's really avoiding letting them know he's Shion. He might be trapped with the initial lie, that he couldn't be Shion to Mokuren as a kid. Or it might be that the others don't like Shion. But we've really only seen hostility from Haru/Shukaido.

His plan with Haru broke down, because Haru is unreliable. So now he's got to be more direct. He can't get Mokuren's password if Alice won't awaken her memories.

But being direct is making him slip, he can't keep up the lie..

First Time - Please Save My Earth - Ep5:

A lot of this episode was Haru being a sad boy and me feeling bad for him.

Another one of those times, I wish I knew the language of flowers because then I would really get all the nooks and crannies of this moment of Alice receiving the carnations from Rin. As it stands, I still get what it conveys. This marks where Alice does get a sense of what Rin truly feels, and how much he does care for her.

There is a romantic tragedy aspect to Rin's desire to destroy the Moon. The Moon is both something he longs for and something he resents. He wants Alice to remember being Mokuran so that they can return to being in love like how they were on the Moon. He is always reaching out to the Moon, but it is something he wants to destroy, for it was where he had to spend the most horrific, traumatic point of his life.

While in this space, I haven't fully worked out this idea, but I feel like there is something to be said about how Rin's conflict plays into the question of whether humanity can avoid extinction. When given this opportunity for a fresh start, due to interpersonal conflicts and trauma, violence and destruction are brought upon/by them.

Hello, Mr. Magic Man. Dropping in, I see.

Gotta love a classic WcDonald's.

Oh, I guess he is not connected to the whole Moon business. Trying to figure out what Mikuro's role in the story is (besides just being someone with superpowers to oppose Rin), I guess he and Tamura serve to show Earth's evolution and value. Earth has evolved to match space, they managed to achieve ESP powers too, and with Tamura, are capable of such love that they can move beyond the mistakes of the past. Not sure if that's on the mark because I can't say that's been an angle the show ever really focused on.

The genre suddenly shifted in this anime. Now we're having supernatural ESPer fights.

Gotta love a classic WcDonald's.

It's the biggest burger chain in anime.

The evolution monologue in episode 2 or 3 seemed out of place, but yeah, humanity is evolving. Probably not by reincarnating aliens. But, maybe?

3

u/No_Rex x2 Aug 19 '26

Trying to figure out what Mikuro's role in the story is (besides just being someone with superpowers to oppose Rin)

For what its worth, the series has not spent 1 single line on establishing how powerful Shion is compared to the other moon espers. He spends the entire time posing as Mr. Indestructible, but is he really?

3

u/TheDanubianCommunard Aug 19 '26

The duality of man.

I like this theory.

The genre suddenly shifted in this anime. Now we're having supernatural ESPer fights.

All it took was five episodes of buildup.

Rewatcher

I did not find this episode that interesting really. It feels like they are just pitting the pieces for a possible finale next episode. Haru messed up. Rin got trauma. Are you trying us to feel pity for the asshole kid?

Shukaido was not that great either.

Nice battle, it was fun to watch.

  • Is Haruhiko close to a mental breakdown?

He seems closer to a broken heart imho.

  • Why Kyoto?

Maybe they wanted a more distinctive accent to differentiate the characters easier, or maybe the mangaka likes it, it is the sort of things they would write on the side of manga pages? I did not read the manga so dunno.

  • Any possiblity that Mokuren will awaken someday?

Maybe? It would makes sense plot wise- either on the remaining 20 minutes or the rest of the manga.

  • Who is Mikuro and what is his deal?

ESP random guy, guess he likes to show off and he enjoyed the opportunity to test the kid power

  • Can we agree that Rin/Shion is really the true antagonist of the entire series?

Yeah? He is hot, however.

  • How possible that non-reincarnator espers also do exist?

The whole cast on the moon were already non reincarnator ESP so no surprise they were some on the earth actually.

This was when cameras were a rarity, not something everybody has on their pockets. You could hide them better.

Imagine this series nowadays, Tiktok would be flooded of videos of the flying kid.

And also I do feel this episode rather convoluted.

Nice battle, it was fun to watch.

The strongest part indeed.

I meant the humans of Earth.

Imagine this series nowadays, Tiktok would be flooded of videos of the flying kid.

That's why a remake series would be great. Something that Gen Z/Gen Alpha kids would appreciate so much.

Yeah it was kinda surprising at first but it gives more variety.

First-time watcher and your host, subs

Super late, very convoluted at this point so questions only.

1) Is Haruhiko close to a mental breakdown?

Really close I think.

2) Why Kyoto?

Just like Tokyo, yet another important major city.

3) Any possiblity that Mokuren will awaken someday?

It takes time.

4) Who is Mikuro and what is his deal?

Just a normal human esper who is affilated with Tamura.

5) Can we agree that Rin/Shion is really the true antagonist of the entire series?

Yes.

6) How possible that non-reincarnator espers also do exist?

As others said, mankind reached that point in their evolution to have their ones.
