First Timer (Dub)

No way Rin’s boobs got bigger. I’m not saying Haru’s lying, but it doesn’t hurt to double-check.

Yuki is basically the audience’s representative here, saying exactly what we’re thinking. You’re not a superhero, dumbass. Nobody’s asking you to be one.

His conversation with Kyo got incredibly corny at times, but I managed to get through it. Some parts were solid, and I’m glad someone finally confronted Kyo directly about this shit. I’ve been getting increasingly frustrated with him, so that conversation was overdue.

Kyo talking about his mother was good, though. His confrontation with his father had a lot that worked for me, and I appreciated getting to see him actually take that step after all the avoidance. I’ve had plenty of issues with how we got here, but this scene landed well.

Honestly, I enjoyed this episode. It was a lot better than the last few. There were still lines that made me cringe a bit, but they did a solid job with this one.

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

I liked the father confrontation too - that felt pretty real.

I just couldn't get passed the logic in the Ue-Akito scene. I could look past the craziness of the previous episode as it was just so over the top, but hwen it comes to the 'grounded' parts, something in me just doesn't want to let them get away with it.

3

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I think Uo forgave Akito because she knows how special she is to Kureno. And Kureno seems like a decent judge of character. Her hugging Akito doesn't mean she endorses her behavior.

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

Come on :P You don't seriously believe that she thinks Kureno is a good judge of chracter for sleeping with a woman who almost killed him (and her best friend). Akito almost ended the love of her love's life and she is fine with Akito now.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I think that Uo sees Tohru in Kureno and that she thinks Tohru while foolhearted wouldn't hang out with the wrong crowd.

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

Come on haha. The amount of mental gymnastics required for that. Up also gave kyo shit all the time starting fights with the guy Tohru is in love with but when it comes to the person who almost killed her own love and Tohru she's super cordial. Make it make sense.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Maybe I'm just being dense but it makes sense to me :c

You can be a good judge of character and still be foolish. Tohru for instance stayed by Kyo's side despite him hitting her because she knew there was a good person there.

3

u/dontoff 16d ago

I'm with you on this one. I think the Uo and Akito interaction makes complete sense to me, and the variables here at play are different from all the other situations we've had with Uotani before.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

And the big key here is how Uo values her friendship with Tohru. Tohru saw good in her just like Kyoko did and still hanged out with Uo despite it putting Tohru's reputation at risk. If Uo likes Kureno which she clearly does, and she won't abandon Akito when she has every right to, how is that any different from Uo not being abandoned by the Hondas?

3

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I like this episode. I thought it had some well written conversations. It was cool to see that there's just people people you can't talk to no matter what. It kinda reminds me of my mom where I try to get her to mend fences with her family but she refuses to do so.

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Haru is a lucky man lol

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

What are your thoughts on Kureno feeling if he doesn't leave Akito, she'll never forgive herself?

What are your thoughts on Yuki and Kyo both revealing to each other they wanted to be the other?

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Kyo that being there for Tohru is an order from the person he aspires to be?

What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad telling his son he'll never forgive him?

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Tohru seemingly running away from Kyo?

First Timers Basket (2019) Dub

  • Honestly, with the student council alone, this could be an entirely different show. All of them have enough personality that I could see them having a standard student council high school shenanigans anime (with a fun narrator to boot).

  • Akito slashed Tohru with a knife… Did they not discuss this?

  • I’m getting mighty confused about why we’re all just cool about Akito stabbing people. I guess, in-universe, “she’s been through enough” is the answer, same to “Tohru didn’t say anything to protect Akito”, but this does not satisfy me at all.

  • I mean, Uo, you didn’t stab Kureno and toxically keep him by your side, so there’s that.

  • I’m still bemused by all this “chemistry” between Kureno and Up.

  • Now I know pale people can turn all sorts of colors. Can somebody familiar with pale skin inform me why a pale skin tone would turn brown due to emotions?

This is giving “Black Haru” and TFS “Remember when I was black?” 😭😭😭😭😭

Sent this to my desi shoujosei friend and she’s cackling; I love her down 😭

  • Yay! Finally! A Yuki and Kyo truth-out!!

  • Yes, Yuki 🪭

  • Kisa and Hiro really did grow.

  • Ah. Kyo’s father is a trash human being.

  • Yes, the classic “I won’t forgive you!” that is somehow meant to be this verbal destroyer. It makes me laugh. TF do I care if you forgive me? Who even asked you????

  • I don’t get this. I have older colleagues, friends, and relatives who have absolutely changed their vile behaviors. I understand there’s truth to the whole “old conservative guard”, but what a bullshit thing to say: “I can’t change from perpetuating abuse because I’m set in my ways”. And then crying about it. It’s not about ability; it’s about will. You will not change.

This isn’t about being 50-something/60-something and not wanting to climb the corporate ladder because you wanna take this job to your retirement and be comfortable. This is about not perpetuating harm onto your own kin.

Girl, bye.

  • Why are you running? WHY are you running 😭

Post Episode Thoughts

First half of this episode, and I’m not exactly sure what to think.

It does not help that my kitties got into my room and wanted cuddles stat.

I assume Tohru never told Uo and Hana that Akito slashed her and blamed all her injuries on the fall. I’d like to think Uo and Hana wouldn’t be receptive to Akito if they knew she had slashed Tohru. And I take it Uo's wave ESP ability didn't pick up on that either. But Akito won’t tell them either. She’ll tell Uo she stabbed Kureno, but Uo just…focused on the fact that Akito is the woman Kureno cares for and Uo is an outsider. So it must be love when you don’t really care that your man’s been stabbed by the woman before you?

Okay…?

Mogo could never.

Mogo would never stand for that.

I am having a wonderful time with the Lanterns series, sorry.

I’ll focus on Yuki and Kyo. They had their “clear the air” altercation where the truth comes out: they envied each other. That’s not exactly news. Furuba did an excellent job setting up how the cousins had a skewed perspective of each other’s lives. I think Yuki being the one to kick Kyo into gear is what I always anticipated, even if this was definitely a bit over-the-top. But it needed to be done.

I’m excited for their next stage in their dynamic with each other. I’m sure they won’t be instantly kikiing or anything, but friendly antagonism is what I hope for.

But now, we wait for the final confrontation between Kyo and Kyouko. I damn well know Kyouko didn’t say something so cruel to Kyo. But I’m assuming Kyouko said “I won’t forgive you” for if Kyo were to blame himself for her death. I’m betting my potential third cat application on that.

At first, I questioned why the sperm donor’s memory was never erased or why he wasn’t kicked out. But there are a lot of big families who retain all relatives, including ones like him.

I still will never like Uo and Kureno. Whatever chemistry Furuba is trying to sell between them, I cannot see it. And I was there when we shipped Jack Frost x Elsa and Hiccup x Rapunzel. I was there for Nanami and Princess Tiana (which is fire) and did JJK x Disney Princesses (which is fire). I was there for Regina x Rodrick. I was there for, recently, [Fairy Tail: Fantasia] Miraxus.

And my shipping radar has been silent on Uo and Kureno. They don’t even have a cool ship name either.

We still have three episodes left, so maybe my complaints will abate by then.

Or there will be a haircut.

TQ

  2. You know how I feel about this ship.

  4. Kyo has grown up in such a horrific family. Mama Kyo wasn’t a perfect person. She will never deserve that sort of blame, especially from her life partner, and I am incredibly sad that the only way she believed she could get away from this was through death. All these family members have failed and were failed. This is a government social worker's nightmare. But this is a family therapist's dream.
  5. Good on him for realizing it, especially so young!! Many, many people—kid, teen, adult—will hold on in the hopes their not-so-great to downright terrorist parent will “see the light” and they can have a parent-child relationship. Despite me being no-contact with my blood parents, I don’t think having the hope that you can work something out with your parents, despite their harm to you, is silly. But what’s incredibly impressive is that Kyo not only recognized that his father was a lost cause, but he seceded. A lot of people may recognize their parent as a lost cause, but they stop there and will periodically attempt to rekindle some form of a positive dynamic. I hope this is final for Kyo. Detaching yourself from an abusive relationship doesn’t always work the first time around.

But like. TV magic and stuff, so this detachment is permanent.

Questions for Those who Have Watched the 2001 Series

pinches Holo's nose

Well, tomorrow I have to be with my family, so here are questions for all of you:

  1. Do you have any weekend plans? If so, care to share?
  2. What’s an old-school anime that you wish more people would watch?
  3. If you’ve read any books or comics (manga, manhwa, and manhua are included in this) lately, what was your most recent title and how did you like it? If not books or comics, then what about a TV series?

3

u/JimmyCWL 17d ago

At first, I questioned why the sperm donor’s memory was never erased or why he wasn’t kicked out.

Because Blaming the Cat was an acceptable activity in the Soma clan.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Blaming the cat is the Sohma family pastime

2

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 16d ago

Ugh, right.

I’m highkey wishing I took one of either the psych or forensic courses at my uni that centralized animanga because I would’ve enjoyed talking about the Sohma Family and their load-bearing issues for course credit.

But the Sohmas aren’t even the worst animanga family to exist 😭

3

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I don't necessarily think they're forgiving Akito more so they're moving on. If they stay hung up on this crazy person, then they're ultimately doing themselves a disservice.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

The strong part of the episode in my opinion was the stuff involving Kyo. I really like the contrast between him mending things slightly with Yuki and him being unable to mend things with his dad. It was done very compellingly.

pinches Holo's nose

Ow!

Well, tomorrow I have to be with my family, so here are questions for all of you:

  1. Do you have any weekend plans? If so, care to share?

I plan on going to Scarowinds tomorrow

  1. What’s an old-school anime that you wish more people would watch?

Strawberry Eggs, as problematic as it is at times.

  1. If you’ve read any books or comics (manga, manhwa, and manhua are included in this) lately, what was your most recent title and how did you like it? If not books or comics, then what about a TV series?

I've been looking at a lot of genderbent Draco comics recently :P

2

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 16d ago

Oh Scarowinds sounds fun!! I hope any scare actors have a good time too. I always get targeted by the free roam ones, but I’m always impressed at their lewks.

So have fun, be safe, don’t punch an actor if they scare you, and hydrate.

Or are you not an easily scare-able person?

Which reminds me that Regal is having a whole month of scary movies and I’m excited to see The Thing for the first time!

Yeah, I remember Strawberry Eggs. It was…definitely something.

I don’t think either of us were old enough to see female!Draco back in the early 2000s, but I was shocked she was making rounds again. Some mangakas/illustrators have drawn her too! Favorite part is female!Draco is a gyaru with a kansai dialect 😭😭 We removed the bigotry and British shit, replaced them with big hoop earrings and delinquentspeak 😭😭

We’re in yet another Bowsette Era.

We need an SCP wiki where the creature in question possesses artists to feminize villain antagonists. It’s harmless. There’s no way to contain it. But it does what it does. And we’re all okay with it.

3

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I would say I get scared on jump scares but I'm not the type to hide behind the couch or something like that.

3

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Oops, nevermind, it's supposed to rain 🫠

3

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 16d ago

Is it maybe a type of rain where you can wear a rain poncho for protection and still do things?

Though getting wet in any capacity and trying to do things can be uncomfortable as hell, even with protection ☹️

Maybe it won’t rain. I’ve gotten lucky that my weather apps predicted rain in my area and nothing happened! Though I started getting suspicious how well-funded meteorological systems are that my multiple weather apps are incorrect about the weather…

1

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Either it rains and I don't go or it doesn't rain and I do go. I'll let you know what happens.

Thoughts on Yuki wishing you could go through life without any missteps?

Thoughts on Hana instantly being able to tell Akito is a woman?

What are your thoughts on Uo hugging Akito?

What are your thoughts on Kureno feeling if he doesn't leave Akito, she'll never forgive herself?

Thoughts on Kyo feeling like he can't do nothing but hurt Tohru?

What are your thoughts on Yuki and Kyo both revealing to each other they wanted to be the other?

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Kyo that being there for Tohru is an order from the person he aspires to be?

What are your thoughts on Kyo telling his dad he's going to live outside and won't be locked up?

What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad telling his son he'll never forgive him?

What are your thoughts on the main servant telling Akito she won't move out the main estate because too many years have passed to change her life around?

What are your thoughts on Akito telling her main servant basically to do as she likes but she can't live at the main estate anymore?

Thoughts on Kyo telling his dad he's gonna visit him again, which his dad is annoyed by?

What are your thoughts on the episode ending with Tohru seemingly running away from Kyo?

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

Manabe trolling Yuki about his ‘mum’ is gold.

How did Akito hear about Ue and Kureno? There's no world someone told her. How does she even know who Hana and Ue is based on their looks… then Ue hugs her. That's certainly not her personality. And besides the Kureno factor, Ue surely would have heard that Akito cut her bestie and would be super defensive: she'd beat anyone to death if someone hurt Tohru usually. Just a super weird scene that didn't add up.

I like Yuki again. Someone needed to beat the shit out of Kyo.

Well that was a quick recovery from Tohru. Girl got stabbed and fell of a cliff and would have had a concussion not to mention the blood loss.

Overall a meh episode.

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

It was explained to me that it wasn't off looks: I agree, that's a misfire from me, as they probably introduced themselves in the room.

3

u/JimmyCWL 17d ago

That's certainly not her personality. And besides the Kureno factor, Ue surely would have heard that Akito cut her bestie and would be super defensive: she'd beat anyone to death if someone hurt Tohru usually.

I think Uo and Hana picked up from Tohru that they can leave Akito to her, even if she didn't outright tell them. They're close enough for that.

2

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

So they didn't pick it up for Kyo with Uo starting fights with him all the time but for the person that almost killed both Uos love and Tohru, they picked up respectful feelings. Makes sense haha .

No girl is also chill with their loves ex, but sure uo changed her personality because Tohru said so

3

u/JimmyCWL 17d ago

In that case, how about this? Tohru risked her life to tell Akito she could still form relationships even without the zodiac bonds.

She wasn't about to let that go to waste by letting Uo kill Akito.

You also seem to have quite the sense of justice. Perhaps you could consider if there are more important matters than pursuing justified retribution at times?

2

u/Second_Cour 16d ago

Ok that scenario is possible. I may indeed have a sense of justice but I also have a sense that people ldon't change their entire outlook and suddenly become polite and nice just because their friend told them to someone they who tried to physically harm those who they love

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I know Miahou has kinda been down on Yuki because of how he treats Kyo. But Kyo is doing himself a disservice here. Tohru clearly wants to be with him more than any other person. His insecurities does not invalidate his strengths.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I dis like Hana and Uo interacting with Akito. It's cool when characters who never interact with each other interact with each other. It also felt like Akito kinda giving her blessing for Uo to be with Kureno.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I know I've been overwhelmingly glowing on this show, but I can't say I'm a fan of Tohru running away. I'm sure it will be explained next episode, but on the surface it feels like a way to prolong the will they won't they between her and Kyo.

3

u/JimmyCWL 17d ago edited 17d ago

What are your thoughts on Uo's conversation with Akito where Akito apologizes for what she did to Kureno?

I wouldn't call it a conversation when only one side said anything. /jk

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Kyo he needs to be there for Tohru?

"Get your act together, dad"

What are your thoughts on Kyo finding out his father blamed his wife for giving birth to Kyo which made her commit suicide?

That wasn't what Kyo realized, not all of it. What he realized was that his father was a man who would blame anyone but himself for his troubles. He had probably been fired. Kyo had nothing to do with it. Yet, he blames Kyo for it anyway. Same thing must have happened all those years ago when he went on a tirade against his wife and drove her to suicide.

I recently found out this is a trait of narcissism. It's never your fault. You're perfect. Someone else screwed you over. If it's not the first target, it's another, and another. There's always someone else to blame for your faults.

What are your thoughts on Kyo trying to make amends with his father but eventually realizing no matter what he says his father is too stuck in his ways?

He wasn't there to make amends. Which part of "I'm through trying to appease your demands just to make you feel better" is making amends? He was there to make a clean and complete break with his father.

Just now, I said Kyo realized his father was a narcissist. Thing is, back during the confrontation with Yuki, Kyo realized that he himself was a narcissist. By discovering that his father was also a narcissist, he realized he probably got that habit from his father.

In a sign of maturity, he doesn't blame his father for that, that would just be continuing to be a narcissist and he's done with that. He just does what he came to do in the first place, to walk away from him.

Ah, almost forgot my major comment for this episode. After all of Ren's efforts to raise Akito as a male. Despite misleading every zodiac younger than herself and practically every outsider who didn't already know. Hana sees right through Akito at their first meeting!

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Hana is probably the most emotionally intelligent cast member of the entire show.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

At least with Kyo, he shows willingness to change. That immediately makes him better than his dad.

Hanajima is just that amazing. It's not enough for her to be the funniest character in the show, she's also the most perceptive.

> That wasn't what Kyo realized, not all of it.

I mean Kyo can be a bit dumb but I don't think he's dumb enough not to recognize that his father drove his mom to suicide after he just went on a rant about it. I mean. How else do you interpret Kyo asking his dad to repeat himself after that?

> He was there to make a clean and complete break with his father.

He told his father he still intended to visit him though. Like yeah he's through with taking his father's abuse but he's still trying to have a relationship with him. This definitely reads as Kyo trying to be the bigger person and make amends with his father to me.

What are your thoughts on Akito telling her main servant basically to do as she likes but she can't live at the main estate anymore?

Did she say that? It didn't sound like she said that.

Thoughts on Kyo telling his dad he's gonna visit him again, which his dad is annoyed by?

[In the sequel manga]We find out he not only visits again but brings his son along. I like to imagine it's to give the boy a warning not to give in to the narcissistic tendencies that runs in their family.

According to the copyright info, the sequel was started around the time the first season was in preproduction.

1

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

What did it sound like she said to you?

3

u/JimmyCWL 17d ago

I think you're talking about the lines where Akito tells the old servant, "then don't, stay exactly where you are. Do what you want. But I'm going, it's past time."

I can only assume you may have heard them as "then don't stay exactly where you are." or "Do what you want. But you're going, it's past time."

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I took it as Akito saying "You can stay, but I have to leave".

3

u/JimmyCWL 16d ago

Ah, I see the problem, I thought you meant Akito saying the servant should leave. Been a while since I got caught by that. My bad.

Anyway, I don't think Akito means leaving the physical location, though that might not be a bad thing. But she definitely means leaving the comfort zone the zodiac bonds gave her until now.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Either way, she's disregarding the advice of the servants which is my greater point.

2

u/JimmyCWL 16d ago

It's good that she realizes that the servants don't run the household and that changes have to be made.

1

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

You have to change with the times and if you're resistant to change, bad things will happen to you.

First Timer

So  now that it seems like the issue with Akito has been resolved, what exactly is going to happen next? That’s the big thing I’m wondering about going into this episode.

I like the opening narration for this episode.

Kakeru saying Tohru is Yuki’s mom actually made me laugh.

I guess we’re having another Yuki episode.

Uotani and Hanajima are looking stylish today.

It’s strange to see Akito making an effort to act normal. Good for her honestly. She seems to be taking responsibility for her actions too.

This moment between Uotani and Kureno is pretty nice.

The joke about Rin turning different colors is kinda funny.

Haru’s honestly really funny right now.

Oh dear, Yuki and Kyo are fighting again.

This is probably their most dramatic fight yet.

I guess it was also a pep talk but it was also definitely a fight.

Oh, Kyo’s going to see his dad.

Wow Kyo’s dad sucks.

Watching Kyo’s dad verbally berate his son like this is really uncomfortable to watch.

Kyo’s inner monologue about his mother is very emotional.

Kyo is remarkably calm towards his father. That must take a lot of restraint.

Akito is getting rid of the cat containment cottage. Good. That’s a big step for this whole family.

I guess we’re getting some character development for the old servant lady? Sure, why not.

Oh hey we’re getting some Machi x Yuki stuff.

The ending to this episode is really sweet.

So  now that it seems like the issue with Akito has been resolved, what exactly is going to happen next? That’s the big thing I’m wondering about going into this episode.

Gotta be the bonds breaking, no?

I like the opening narration for this episode.

Me too

Kakeru saying Tohru is Yuki’s mom actually made me laugh.

I mean, where is the lie?

I guess we’re having another Yuki episode.

It makes sense because Yuki and Machi still haven't gotten together.

Uotani and Hanajima are looking stylish today.

As always

It’s strange to see Akito making an effort to act normal. Good for her honestly. She seems to be taking responsibility for her actions too.

I like at least she's making an attempt. Even if it may arguably be too little too late.

This moment between Uotani and Kureno is pretty nice.

Indeed

The joke about Rin turning different colors is kinda funny.

Like a chameleon :D

Haru’s honestly really funny right now.

"He likes flat girls." Rin looks at her chest "I think I'll do fine."

Oh dear, Yuki and Kyo are fighting again.

As per usual

This is probably their most dramatic fight yet.

Probably

I guess it was also a pep talk but it was also definitely a fight.

Because Kyo is overthinking things

Oh, Kyo’s going to see his dad.

Hmm

Wow Kyo’s dad sucks.

Indeed

Watching Kyo’s dad verbally berate his son like this is really uncomfortable to watch.

Especially when Kyo is trying to make things right.

Kyo’s inner monologue about his mother is very emotional.

Very much so

Kyo is remarkably calm towards his father. That must take a lot of restraint.

He's being so mature here

Akito is getting rid of the cat containment cottage. Good. That’s a big step for this whole family.

A step in the right direction

I guess we’re getting some character development for the old servant lady? Sure, why not.

Is it character development or more the old guard being stubborn?

Oh hey we’re getting some Machi x Yuki stuff.

Yay

The ending to this episode is really sweet.

I found it confusing. Like, why is Tohru treaking?

Questions of the Day

What are your thoughts on Uo's conversation with Akito where Akito apologizes for what she did to Kureno?

What are your thoughts on Uo telling Kureno he needs to forget about Akito and start a new life, preferably with her.

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Kyo he needs to be there for Tohru?

What are your thoughts on Kyo finding out his father blamed his wife for giving birth to Kyo which made her commit suicide?

What are your thoughts on Kyo trying to make amends with his father but eventually realizing no matter what he says his father is too stuck in his ways?

One would think

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Kyo he needs to be there for Tohru?

I'm glad Yuki's encouraging him

Yuki encouraging Kyo isn't the first person he's encouraged. He also did so to Machi.

What are your thoughts on Kyo finding out his father blamed his wife for giving birth to Kyo which made her commit suicide?

Kyo's dad just really sucks

But let's not make that forget he also is dealing with trauma coping.

What are your thoughts on Kyo trying to make amends with his father but eventually realizing no matter what he says his father is too stuck in his ways?

I'm glad he at least tried even if it went nowhere

It's the least he can do

u/MishouMai 17d ago

While it was nice to get some closure for Kureno and Uo, the real meat of the episode was Kyo deciding his future. I don't know how I didn't see this coming but his father being abusive to the point it drove his wife to suicide and then him blaming Kyo for it is unsurprising. Kyo a better man than me though because if I had the realization he had they would have to put me in jail for (attempted) murder.

> What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Kyo he needs to be there for Tohru?

He loves her so much. Now that Yuki and Kyo have revealed their true feelings about the other to each other, hopefully they can move on. Not saying they can't still fight but hopefully this makes them less antagonistic towards each other.

> What are your thoughts on Kyo finding out his father blamed his wife for giving birth to Kyo which made her commit suicide?

As I said, Kyo's a better man than me because I would've snapped and tried to kill him. At the very least I'd have roughed my father up a bit, consequences be damned.

> What are your thoughts on Kyo trying to make amends with his father but eventually realizing no matter what he says his father is too stuck in his ways?

I don't think Kyo has realized his father is too far gone because even after realizing his father was the real reason his mom committed suicide he still promised to visit him. It seems to me like Kyo is still planning to try and have a relationship with his father which is wild because even without the urge to commit violence if I found out my father drove my mom to suicide yet insisted on making it out to be my fault I'd want nothing to do with him. I love Kyo but he might be a little too forgiving in some ways.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I can relate to Kyo being too forgiving because with family you really want to make it work. I give my mom and my dad who passed away 7 years ago endless chances because they're my parents and I feel like I need them in my life.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I wasn't expecting the first person for Akito to apologize to to be Arisa. I know she has the relationship with Kureno, but it feels like there are more prominent people she should apologize to first. But maybe the idea is she has to start small before she can work on the big apologies. Uo you can quickly apologize to but people like Rin and Hatori are gonna take years of rehabilitating those scars.

> What are your thoughts on Kureno feeling if he doesn't leave Akito that she'll never forgive herself?

Man I get that he cares about Akito but Kureno also needs to think about himself more. I don't know if I like Uo being willing to throw everything away to be with him but he's definitely got people who care about him and even if this might be good for him in the long run the motives behind it aren't the best.

> What are your thoughts on Kyo's dad telling him he'll never forgive him?

Sir, who are you? Kyo don't need your forgiveness. Fuck Kyo's father (Kazuma is Kyo's daddy, not this fucker.). All my homies hate Kyo's father.

Kyo's dad is really the root of Kyo's emotional baggage. As bad as being the cat is, to be accused of killing your own mother is enough to traumatize any kid.

Re-watch, blu ray, dubbed

Kyo and Yuki's confrontation voices what Tohru saw a full season ago (if she were there, she would clasp her hands and think happy thoughts, not gloat like Shigure). The two boys end this episode sprinting - run, don't walk on your path!

Kyo makes two difficult visits: talking to his dad and finally going to see Tohru, rather than run away.

The ending is both hilarious and meaningful, something that occurs frequently in this series.

What are your thoughts on Uo's conversation with Akito where Akito apologizes for what she did to Kureno? Seeing Akito finally established in Uotani's mind that Uotani is the outsider, but now she realizes it doesn't matter and won't stop her pursuing Kureno.

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Kyo he needs to be there for Tohru? The best part of Yuki's venting was telling Kyo that there are some things only Kyo can do, like make Tohru happy.

What are your thoughts on Kyo trying to make amends with his father but eventually realizing no matter what he says his father is too stuck in his ways? Kyo's father is stuck in the Soma clan thinking of the zodiac. So, too, is the non-zodiac elderly lady, but I think she'll adjust better to Akito's new policies than him.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I really love how much Yuki has advanced as a character. I don't think he would be thie assertive if not for Tohru being in his life. It was also important he had this conversation with Kyo to basically let him know he's okay with him being with Tohru.

Rewatcher, Subbed

Non-Spoiler Character Chart

Alright, this should be the last episode where I'm quite delayed in getting here and should be back to normal tomorrow...

A big episode for Kyo, at least the third such episode we've had this season on this, lol. Much of Kyo's mentality has become very frustrating at least early on in this episode. The doomerism and misery is getting so over the top its ridiculous. He didn't visit Tohru in the hospital? He still has this mindset that he needs to run away and has packed to do so? I try to temper my frustration with the fact that people in this emotional state don't act logically. We're viewing this as an objective third party and we can see behavior that comes off as just ridiculous, but people who are this down on themselves can and do act this way. That tempers my feelings somewhat, but I'll admit the rest of the episode made me feel its going in a better direction.

First, Yuki and Kyo finally are honest with each other, albeit in a way that I don't think they were intentionally looking to do at first and needed a fist fight between them. Kyo finally realizes that Yuki, the one for whom he was jealous of all these years actually was jealous of him. And actually admired him. He also points out that Kyo very much has protected Tohru by making her glad and it was something that he personally couldn't accomplish. Big stuff for Kyo to finally realize. Kyo also has a confrontation with his father. In this scene we've got one character acting like a child and the other acting quite mature. And its the parent that is the child. Kyo's father really is pathetic. While you could already get this sense earlier in the show, this episode just makes it so obvious what a loser he is and that while Kyo has his DNA, he's not someone for which Kyo should show any respect or admiration. I get the sense in this scene that Kyo realizes that a lot of the suffering that his mom went through was because his father was so down on everything. And his father blames things on his mom too. To the point where Kyo realizes that he shouldn't blame himself for his mother's death? I sure hope so. Thankfully Kyo heads to see Tohru at the hospital... only for her to run away. lol.

Other thoughts:

  • As a big time Yuki - Machi shipper, I was so happy to see her taking the initiative to call him. Yuki clearly was ecstatic to get that phone call from her. I have to assume her realizing the true nature of his relationship with Tohru earlier in the episode made her realize that there was a possibility for something between them?

  • As Kyo's father rants and raves about how he's going to be locked up, I think to myself that after the events of the prior episode Akito probably is going to dismiss that stupid bet and the tradition and let Kyo be free. And we get the confirmation of it later on. She's even going to have the cottage destroyed. So things really do seem to be on a path for a happy ending here. The days of crazed murder attempting evil Akito are over, as is the requirement that Kyo's curse be broken in time for graduation.

  • The servant/hag who has been often seen pushing all these horrible mindsets with Akito and the zodiac finally breaks down and admits she's too old to change. Ma'am, I could care less about your feelings at this point. Yeah, it is easier for young people to handle it, but think of the responsibility you have held for how things have gone down during Akito's entire life. You need some accountability, and if that is you become irrelevant and feel you've wasted your life pushing for things that now the Soma family head is dismissing, so be it.

  • Kisa and Hiro are always very cute together, and in this episode I realized that only his curse breaking kinda screws things up because now she'll transform if they hug. When they were both zodiacs there was no need to worry about that.

  • Uo and Hanajima get to meet Akito! Hana also has little trouble in realizing that Akito is a girl. Uo meets the woman who has kept Kureno essentially locked up, and who stabbed him! She finally gets to see Kureno again and now he's set on the fact that he has to leave Akito (although seems more so for Akito's good rather than his own, c'mon man, start thinking of yourself!). And Uo says she'd go with him! Despite admitting earlier that their meeting was essentially just a tiny blip in his life. Well, let's see where this goes before I share final feelings on it.

[Furuba]OMG I'm so hyped for tomorrow. Can't recall if its Kyo - Tohru, Yuki - Machi or both next ep, but we've got some amazing curse breaking moments coming up.

Quid's Song of the Day

Today I am going with the song I Want to Protect which plays at the start of the episode.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Kyo's dad might be along with Rin's parents the most twisted characters in the whole show. That are completely irredeemable and serve to make life difficult for everybody else.

2

u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 16d ago

I have to assume her realizing the true nature of his relationship with Tohru earlier in the episode made her realize that there was a possibility for something between them?

Whoa! I was never even close to figuring that out.

That makes sense! Yep. Absolutely. Yep. Yep. (in-person, I would react like the "shirt buttoned wrong" sequence between Manabe and Yuki)

1

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

The servant stuff is interesting because this is like the first time Akito has done something in the interest of herself. And that comes off the heels of Tohru stopping doing things in the interest of her mother.

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 17d ago

Akito has quite often done things for herself. Do you mean this is the first time she's pushed back against this hag servant character?

1

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I meant the first time she's advised to do something and she did differently. Like how Kyoko supposedly said she'd never forgive Kyo but Tohru did just that.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.

For there is an animal in all of us <3

Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.

Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.

I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P

Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

Well, it's been a day since the start of the Fruits Basket rewatch. Today is the start of the Spice and Wolf one. I expect low turnout for both.

I was supposed to have a doctor's appointment today but had to cancel because I couldn't afford the upfront payment.

Nighttime

Yuki wishing you could go through life without any missteps.

If only things had been different.

No wrong turns or regrets

Brother, same

At school now

Manabe asking Yuki about Tohru

The other student council president members are here as well.

Kimi asking what Tohru is to Yuki.

"She's his mom."

Well, yes, Manabe, but actually no.

Poor short king

Hey, Uo and Hana

Uo wonders where Kyo is

She feels something happened between him and Tohru.

And there's Akito

We've never seen her interact with Tohru's friends before.

She tells them this whole thing was her fault.

And then she tells Uo is here as well.

You know, on account of the stabbing.

Hana able to instantly tell Akito is a woman.

She is the person Kureno had to stay with.

This leads to Uo hugging Akito

At least there's no hard feelings

Uo realizing that she is nothing but a footnote, the outsider of this whole situation.

Uo with Kureno now

Kureno says he doesn't deserve her

He needs to leave Akito

"If I stay, she'll never forgive herself."

Uo says she'll follow him anywhere.

I still disapprove of this pairing on account of the age difference.

Uo says she'll wait if he needs more time.

She'll be more than just a footnote.

Yuki and Shigure walking in the forest.

They haven't really been eating since Tohru was hospitalized.

Hey, Haru

Haruhi talking about someone else being forgetful is hilarious.

They're back at the Sohma place, by the way.

Haruhi talking about Rin apparently turning different colors.

Also, her boobs increased. Good for them.

"Them"

Haru bringing up Yuki not visiting Tohru.

This gets him to get up and meet Kyo.

He's wondering why he didn't meet Tohru.

I think Yuki knows Tohru's heart belongs to Kyo so he's trying to allow Kyo to make a move.

This is basically Minori with Taiga towards Ryuuji.

Kyo feels like he can't do nothing but hurt Tohru.

"It's better if she has you."

And then they has fight

Damn, he sent him through the wall

Yuki calls Kyo nothing but a stupid cat.

Then Kyo admits all he wanted was to be him.

I like Haru and Shigure casually talking about food ignoring what's going on.

Yuki repeatedly punching Kyo

Then he tells him he wanted to be like him.

They wanted to be each other. Powerful stuff.

Yuki says all they can do is be themselves and accept who they are.

Tohru is so happy being with Kyo

Now I'm just imagining the Invincible scene but with Kyo and Yuki.

"Think, Kyo!" Think!"

Yuki tells Kyo to get up and do something about the situation. It's an order from the person he aspires to be.

Kyo walking now

But first, he has to meet someone else.

Hiro walking with Kisa

Kisa is the first one he told about his curse breaking.

Hiro asks if his curse breaking bother her.

She asks if it bothers him if she's possessed and he isn't.

He says no, but before he can elaborate on that, here's Kyo.

Oh, shit. Is that his dad?

Kyo noticing he's drinking

I mean, wouldn't you in 2026?

Who's Kyo Daddy making excuses

He demands Kyo admit he killed her.

Gee, no wonder Kyo is how he is.

And then he tells him it is his fault.

But he refuses to be locked up.

He's going to live his life on the outside.

The dad is incredulous. I mean, how can anyone love someone so unforgivable?

Dad throwing an alcoholic drink at him.

That reminds me of my childhood. Memories.

Dad saying he'll never forgive him.

He never wants to see them again.

Kyo however remembers these are the same words he told his mother.

Is he... the reason his mother died and he's just projecting it onto his son?

He's so pathetic. Kyo seems to finally realize this.

Kyo saying he wanted his mother to live so badly.

Then he tells his dad he won't throw himself away.

He'll try to really live

God, his dad is so pathetic

Looks like Akito is going to pay Kyo a visit.

Gonna destroy the cottage

Doesn't care what Kyo's father thinks.

Main servant says too many years have passed to change her life around.

No life outside of this estate

Isn't Akito rich? Why doesn't she buy her a house?

The animation in the head servant's hand is incredible. It is so detailed.

Akito tells her to do what she wants.

"But I'm going. It's past time."

Back with Kyo and his dad

Decisions can be difficult, but also incredibly valuable.

Kyo vows to visit him again.

Dad doesn't seem to appreciate that

Yuki talking again

This is the same monologue as in the beginning, though it now reflects Kyo's mindset.

You have to keep walking one step at a time.

Gotta move towards that something or someone in our destination.

Machi calling Yuki

She wants to give him something

She is to Yuki what Tohru is to Kyo.

Kyo wonders if Tohru will accept him.

Boy, come on

Uo and Hana leaving the hospital

And Tohru follows behind

Kyo and Tohru are face-to-face of each other.

He loves her so much

Uh...

Damn, Tohru ran

But Kyo is going to chase after her

And so we end on Kyo going after Tohru.

Overall, this is the first episode in a while that wasn't 10 out of 10. But what we got was still pretty good. I like the interactions between Uo and Akito here. The scene between Yuki and Kyo felt like a good resolution of their relationship. And the scene between Kyo and his father brings him closure over what happened to his mother with him realizing he isn't the reason why his mother died. That allows him to focus on Tohru and his future with her. I say this episode isn't 10 out of 10, but this episode would still be better than most episodes in other series. It truly speaks to the high threshold this series maintains.

I surmise Yuki and Machi are going to end up together and that will lead to him being less dependent on Tohru. Akito will apologize to Kyo and give him her blessing on being with Tohru. I kinda don't want either Kyo and Yuki forgiving Akito for what she did to them. Yuki especially I feel like would be too suspension breaking. I don't think it would ruin the show foe me because a lot has happened since the emotional abuse she put the Sohmas through, but I still maintain some of them should refuse her apology over what she did. To be totally absolved of any wrongdoing wouldn't sit right with me.

This is like a top 25 episode, though like I said most series this would be their best episode. The writing really is phenomenal where all the beats hit and you understand ehere everyone is coming from.

What are your thoughts on Uo's conversation with Akito where Akito apologizes for what she did to Kureno?

I like this even though I kinda feel like Akito should be apologizing to Kureno.

What are your thoughts on Uo telling Kureno he needs to forget about Akito and start a new life, preferably with her?

I mean, yeah. Probably for the best.

What are your thoughts on Yuki telling Kyo he needs to be there for Tohru?

Good advice. It's similar to what he told Haru about Rin.

What are your thoughts on Kyo finding out his father blamed his wife for giving birth to Kyo which made her commit suicide?

For Kyo's dad to proceed to twist it as being Kyo's fault is extremely fucked up.

What are your thoughts on Kyo trying to make amends with his father but eventually realizing no matter what he says his father is too stuck in his ways?

I like that. Sometimes you want to patch things up but the other person isn't willing to move on. You just have to forget about them.
