Watching Dubbed

I do find the police side of the story to be pretty interesting.

Watari just calmly standing there in the background is really funny.

You know what, Light may be a bit of a megalomaniac but at least he helps out his sister with her homework.

Light’s dad really does look kind of like Commissioner Gordon.

It’s kind of funny how easily Light is able to hack his dad’s computer.

Seems we’ve got another death montage. These are so over the top.

“I’ve deliberately left about 50 criminals alive for times like this.” - Light Yagami. That is such an insane sentence.

The police’s concerns about being killed by Kira is pretty fair honestly. If I were a cop I wouldn’t wanna work on this case either.

The police have already begun to follow Light around. Light’s pretty bad at not being suspicious.

It is kinda funny that shinigami can see peoples names floating above their heads like an MMO.

Ryuk is trying to tempt Light with his eyes. Pretty good cliffhanger to end on.

What are your thoughts on Light’s father being the person in charge of the Kira case?

Definitely adds an interesting new dynamic to things.

“I’ve deliberately left about 50 criminals alive for times like this.” - Light Yagami. That is such an insane sentence.

Some people keep a stash of canned food/daily necessities in case they ever need it...

Others keep a list of criminals in case they ever need a couple kills!

Always gotta be prepared I suppose

Me too

Watari just calmly standing there in the background is really funny.

I assume that is Ryuk?

You know what, Light may be a bit of a megalomaniac but at least he helps out his sister with her homework.

He seems to at least care about his family.

Light’s dad really does look kind of like Commissioner Gordon.

I definitely can see it

It’s kind of funny how easily Light is able to hack his dad’s computer.

I know, right?

Seems we’ve got another death montage. These are so over the top.

Light doesn't mess around

"I’ve deliberately left about 50 criminals alive for times like this.” - Light Yagami. That is such an insane sentence.

He's like me prewatching episodes of anime for rewatches just to get them in the can.

The police’s concerns about being killed by Kira is pretty fair honestly. If I were a cop I wouldn’t wanna work on this case either.

I might try fleeing the Country

The police have already begun to follow Light around. Light’s pretty bad at not being suspicious.

Who walks around at night like that?

It is kinda funny that shinigami can see peoples names floating above their heads like an MMO.

Ryuk is like a walking Sword Art Online character.

Ryuk is trying to tempt Light with his eyes. Pretty good cliffhanger to end on.

He has special eyes

What are your thoughts on Light’s father being the person in charge of the Kira case?

Definitely adds an interesting new dynamic to things.

I thought it was so cool. It got me excited to see what's next.

I do think the dub is a bit mixed: the acting style is consistent with that era, which isn’t the best thing. It’s hard to point my finger at it, but it feels a bit awkward at times. I don’t mind it too much, but I’d be remiss not to bring it up.

I love the methodical crime solving introduction: narrowing down a profile based on the times the deaths took place.

Great twist with the detective being Light’s Dad.

Love Light’s creativity within the rules of the notebook. This show really is a great logical and psychology puzzle.

There is so much great lore: Shinigami being able to claim human lifespans and add it to their own - such intriguing worldbuilding. Then we get the massive reveal that Ryuk can trade half of Light’s life for his eyes. No one sane would take this deal (but by this stage, we know Light isn't sane). Though in the scenario that Light gets cornered by L, that seems like a pretty solid trade! There's no way L could cover for that possibility.

Overall, this was a slightly slower paced episode, yet I’m on the edge of my seat.

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 11d ago

If I remember right, one thing a little odd about the dub is how they go back and forth between "shinigami" and "god of death". It's maybe understandable at a time when anime was less mainstream in the west and especially there was less out there that delved into Japanese culture, but I still feel like they should have just clarified the meaning a few times and then stuck with shinigami. "God of death" just sounds so awkward when used this frequently.

2

u/Second_Cour 11d ago

I can't remember that much from the show since I watched it around the time of release, but will certainly keep an eye out. Right now it hasn't seemed odd, as I assumed they're trying to teach the vocabulary but it would indeed be odd if they go back and forth going forward.

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 11d ago

If I remember right, then at some point they do mostly switch to just saying shinigami. I just noticed in this episode them saying god of death a bunch of times in the same conversation and it feeling awkward.

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

My notes mostly say God of Death just because the spelling of Shinigami is kinda hard for me. I don’t want to pause every couple minutes to look up the spelling probably because I'm lazy lol

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I like how they interchange and mix it up.

3

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I'm surprised they just don't call them "Death Gods". That goes way harder.

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 11d ago

Might be a syllable thing there. I don't know how they did it in any of the official subs to compare it.

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I might have to check it out

2

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I like the dub because I feel it's the right amount of cheese but just enough to still take seriously.

2

u/Second_Cour 11d ago

So if they re recorded a dub to sound more serious in a serious psychological thriller like the intent of the director and the original Japanese va, you'd still prefer this one?

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I dunno. Like, I know you said about Fruits Basket that it was almost too serious at points to where it crossed into melodrama. I don’t know if you can tell the story of Death Note without it crossing into silliness. Its story beats are far more goofy than Fruits Basket. It makes Fruits Basket seem grounded in reality.

Compare Death Note to Breaking Bad. Both shows feature a guy who at the end of his rope descends further into madness. Breaking Bad has it happen over the course of multiple seasons. Death Note after half the first episode already has Light killing hundreds of people in the first five days. I think Death Note could've spent some episodes dealing with Light’s descent into madness. But it's almost comical the way Light already just starts killing everyone.

I don't think a completely serious adaptation of Death Note could really work. The idea is almost too goofy to be played straight. You would have to change things about it and then it becomes an entirely different show.

That may seem like I'm criticizing the show, but I actually love how batshit insane the series is. It kinda give me Prison School vibes. And the actual suspense of trying to catch Light is legitimately suspenseful. It's really the way Light kills that I can't help but laugh at. The guy literally stayed up all day just to make people doubt him being a student. That is a level of paranoia that I can't help but laugh at while being entertained by.

2

u/Second_Cour 11d ago

I think it's an interesting question, as a lot of people LOVE the way they made this dub, so you'd be in the majority here.

I think I'm misunderstanding your point about silliness. Can you define what you mean by silly? To me silly is something using exaggerated humour, that basically plays like a caricature. Are you talking about believability, or the Death Note idea itself?

Though Light isn't at the end of his rope, nor do I think a comparison to Breaking Bad is the best one, I do kind of get what you mean. In terms of 'descent into madness' that's a very gradual, drawn-out process.

I have said the same thing that you just did a few times in my writeups - Light goes zero to one hundred, which to me didn't feel believable especially because he's a model student, a good son. Becoming drunk with power that quickly wasn't realistic, and I felt cheated of his 'downfall' playing out over a longer period, as that's something that really intrests me. We're in full agreement there.

Going back to silliness, as later you use the term goofy: do you mean the idea that someone can kill with the death note is silly/goofy? Or that you don't believe that someone would start killing so many people so quickly? If it's a believability issue, I think that's valid, but if you think that it's 'funny/goofy' then I think the director would say that they failed, as there's nothing to suggest that he wanted people to take it away as a comedy.

Doesn't mean that you can't like it - e.g. you'll remember I thought the FruBa cliff break episode was satire, and I enjoyed it in that framing, but as you pointed out, it's not what the writer/director intended.

For me, I'm always willing to suspend disbelief around the show's fantasy hook. In FruBa, as bizarre as that hook of humans -> animals is, I still enjoyed it, and didn't apply a 'silliness' factor to it, as fantasy is fantasy.

Back to the 'siliness' (I really think we need to define those terms better haha), if your main concern is that Light goes on a killing spree too quickly, then if we spent multiple episodes, of him gradually getting used to the power of the death note, and then increasing what he's doing as he started to understand have cloudy values and morals, in his descent towards madness, then would the show be considered serious for you?

2

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

When I say silliness, I mean so over the top that you can't take it seriously. Ryuk's design is a prime example where it's probably meant to be scary but the vacant stare on his face makes him look like this lovable goofball. By the same token, the quickness with which Light started killing everyone I can't help but laugh at. He went all in almost immediately.

I didn't really see Fruits Basket as satire because I know people in my life who act like Akito and members of the Sohma family. Akito really reminded me of my dad.

2

u/Second_Cour 11d ago

Sure yeah, I don't think anyone who made Death Note thought "let's make it so over the top people won't take it seriously" as a goal, so in that case they've failed in your eyes.

About FruBa I was quite specific about which scenes came off as satire. I don't think the people you know are in a habit of hugging knife wielding psychos, or falling off cliffs either. I think it's reasonable for me to see that as "so over the top people won't take it seriously", just like your reaction to Death Note is pretty reasonable in the way you explained it.

PS I do know some pretty crazy people (obviously not friends anymore) who would probably do what Light did with a note book like that. But like I said, I'm in full agreement that Light went 0 to 100 which to me wasn't believable

2

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I should clarify that despite being over the top, I still take Death Note seriously. Like, the suspense feels legit and genuinely gripping.

I guess the best comparison I can give Death Note is that it's a less self-aware version of Kill La Kill. Kill La Kill had some legitimately well written scenes, but it also knew it was absurd and over the top. Part of the charm with Death Note in my opinion is it has some legitimately well written scenes, but I don't think it knows its own absurdity. It feels like it's written this way because the creator thought it would be deep and thought provoking, which only serves to make it more enjoyable in my opinion.

Hugging someone holding a knife sounds absurd out of context, but it makes sense with how the character of Tohru was written. And I love how persistent she is in her warmth.

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I don't know if you've read the Harry Potter fanfic My Immortal, but that's what Death Note reminds me of. It felt like it was written by someone who felt like they were writing the most badass thing imaginable. The only difference is My Immortal is so bad it's good whereas Death Note I would classify as a good series. It's just maybe a different type of good than the author intended.

Death Note is like if you cross Jojo's Bizarre Adventure with My Chemical Romance.

2

u/Second_Cour 10d ago

I have never read a fanfic, and I think I've only seen one Harry Potter movie; not my cup of tea.

Writing the most bad-ass thing ever sounds try-hard to me, and typically I wouldn't like that approach.

But let's see where this show goes. So far I haven't gotten this dramatically 'over the top' feeling - I find that stage of madness he's in right now believable (I can think of many real world people through various stages of human history with his God complex). My issue (and yours) is that it skipped a bunch of steps to get there. To rephrase: I don't find it over the top that someone with the death note would do what Light is doing. But I do find the fact that he is the one doing it unbelievable.

Interestingly, apparently the manga also accelerated those stages too.

1

u/Holofan4life 10d ago

I think Light only taking less than a week to start killing everyone is super over the top.

Great twist with the detective being Light’s Dad.

This series lives on dramatic irony and does a very good job at it. In this case if you read his name plate last episode you could have guessed actually

The shinigami eyes are a really cool wrinkle in the plot that will come into play more later, but I'm not sure how I feel about them being used as a cliffhanger here. [Death Note E4+] Maybe my views are clouded by having seen the show before, but it seems extremely obvious that he's not going to take the deal. Even if his megalomania didn't make it unlikely he'd ever make that kind of sacrifice, it would short-circuit the plot so massively that there's no way they'd go that direction form a narrative standpoint.

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I think it's cool because it's probably the best use of Ryuk we've seen so far. Up until now, he's been more ancillary than anything.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Death Note.

Names need not be written down.

Very few anime transend the medium it is a part of. One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Speed Racer. Those are really the four where even non anime fans know of it. I would argue there was a point in time where Death Note was like this as well where even if you weren’t an anime fan, you knew what Death Note was.

I of course have experienced Death Note through various memes and the like. I even remember checking out a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons specifically because they parodied Death Note, and I’m not even a modern Simpsons watcher. But despite being familiar with the show for the better part of almost 15 years, I’ve never actually seen Death Note. It’s just one of those things that escaped me.

I’ve heard Death Note is notorious for having a dip in quality. That with the conclusion of part 1, the show isn’t as good as when it started. This rewatch is less a matter of deciding if the show iw good or not and more is part 2 really as bad as it reputation suggests. My prediction will be no but it’ll be a show that goes from 9 out of 10 to 8 out of 10.

Death Note was at one point arguably the most mainstream anime in the entire world. And so it’s time we revisit what I’m sure got many people into anime.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way. Because potato chips.

I'm actually writing this on my old, cracked phone to let my other phones charge.

I like the sound of someone biting into an apple.

At night

People going over the murders

14 people who claim to know Kira or have seen him.

21 people claiming to be Kira

The information of the heart attack victims was publicly available in Japan immediately prior to their deaths.

4 PM to 2 AM on weekdays is when the deaths occur.

Damn, does Kira ever get any sleep?

L thinks that Kira has a specific definition of right and wrong.

Yeah, being a creep and not being a creep.

At least there's been a decrease of crime. There's that.

The big development is L thinks it may be a student.

Two members talking alone, including Chief.

There's nothing wrong with pointing out the truth so long as you don't celebrate what Kira is doing.

Light helping her sister with her homework.

Ryuk looks so bored lol

OH MY FUCKING GOD

DAD IS THE FUCKING CHIEF ARE YOU KIDDING ME

HOLY PEAK

AND LIGHT KNOWS HIS DAD IS A POLICEMAN AND HACKS INTO THE INVESTIGATION

Light knows that a student is suspected.

Light it looks like is going to start writing more elaborate details on the cause of death.

And so we get a montage of people dying as Light engages in everyday life.

Damn, 23 victims?

Sid Vicious is lucky it wasn't 22.

Second day in a role this has happened.

Killing one off every hour on the hour.

So, now Kira is what? Getting only one hour of sleep? Or 66 minutes 40 seconds of sleep? Or one hour 59 minutes of sleep?

Light walking with Ryuk

Ryuk is more hovering than walking

Light is trying to get closer to L to eliminate him.

L will investigate the police, and the police will investigate L. That's when Light will strike.

Damn, some of the police force are resigning.

They seem worried Kira will try to killra them.

What pussies

Lol, I enjoy Ryuk in class

A shadowy figure

Light has a complete list of the investigation.

Light and Ryuk walking again

Ryuk says he's not on Light's side or L's side.

I like Ryuk's heart earrings

Ryuk says Light is being followed at this exact moment.

Well, that's disconcerting

Why is Light walking in the dark anyhow?

Light back inside

He needs his stalker's name

Ryuk says they are able to take human lifespans for themselves.

So long as they don't slack off, a God of death cannot die.

The name and lifespan appear above a human's head.

A God of death can give a human their eyes if a deal is made.

Half of that person's remaining lifespan.

To pay for the God of death's powers.

To know people's names just by looking at them.

Meanwhile someone who I presume to be L looks on from afar.

Overall, this was a very intense foreboding episode. We learn that Light is the chief policeman, that L may be following Light around, and that Light will likely make a deal with the God of death Ryuk to gain increased access in his Death Note killings. I actually don't think it is L following Light around. Something like that seems too risky for L to do. I think it's more likely they're a decoy or an associate of L's to try and draw Kira near them. That's my prediction, anyway.

This was another great episode. Better than the first two, I would say. The show knows how to have this intensity about it and never let up no matter what. It's quite impressive.

If the rest of the show is like this, then consider me fully invested and all in.

2

u/Second_Cour 11d ago

Yeah given that L has been dotting every i so far, I'd assume they allocate a policeman/PI to anyone who could follow his initial suspicion of Killa being a student. Given his understanding that the dude must be related to or a police, the first round of detail would probably be all police in the region with kids of school age.

I'm also feeling the intensity and investment, though I do wonder how they're going to maintained it. You mentioned it a common opinion that it falls off, and although I had quite a positive memory of it, given L already knows so much about Killa, I wonder how they're going to keep it going. In most shows to get to that level of understanding by the investigator, they'd take up a whole season.

1

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

What I like about the show so far is that L and Light are trying to catch each other. It kinda feels like Spy Vs Spy from Mad magazine.

2

u/Hartzilla2007 11d ago

First Timer

Well it starts off as Light not thinking things through again and getting the suspect field narrowed down in his direction, but then he makes use of his dad running the investigation and not kid proofing the police files to deliberately do this to cause friction between L and the police, so its down o if L can see this coming or not. And yet figures Ryuk would try to see how many deals with the devil Light will go for seeing how quickly he jumped on the murder notebook.

First Time Note Taker, subs

Having caught up with the first 3 episodes, I really like the naive dynamic Light creates. Both in his sense of justice, but also in his way of toying with the investigators and most importantly his naive mistakes, mainly from the latter part of ep2.

I didn't expect to enjoy Ryuk as much as I do tho. He is a great device to further stir Light's thoughts around.

QOTD:

What are your thoughts on Light’s father being the person in charge of the Kira case?

My reaction was almost yelling out loud: "Of course his father is the high ranking police officer! Such a smart way to introduce another story connection!"

2

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I thought Ryuk's comments on not taking sides is interesting. It shows how doesn't really have a dog in this fight. And why would he, he's only here because he's obligated on account of the Death Note.

If anything, he'd probably want L to get his hands on the Death Note just to claim another person. The more, the merrier.

Thoughts on misinformation spreading about the Kira case?

A very realistic development. Makes the case feel all more real.

Thoughts on information of the heart attack victims was publicly available in Japan immediately prior to their deaths?

I guess in the real world sharing such info is meant as a means to deter other people from committing crimes. It's also great material to generate views for the media companies. Now, I believe that criminals have the same human rights as other people, so I'm probably against things that would step over the line of invading someone's privacy, but at the same time I'm not knowledgeable enough to say where the line is that determines which info about which criminals is correct to share with the masses in this way.

Thoughts on 4 PM to 2 AM on weekdays is when the deaths occur?

I wondered why did they jump to the conclusion that the perpetrator is a student, based on those times. Couldn't it easily be some regular adult doing an 8-4?

Thoughts on L thinking that Kira has a specific definition of right and wrong?

Considering the mysterious string of deaths only affected violent criminals, it makes sense that you'd suspect some ideology behind it.

Thoughts on there being a decrease of crime?

A fact that does sound like a realistic reaction. But just as Kira's father an the young police officer agreed upon, it isn't the correct way to enact justice.

What are your thoughts on L thinking it may be a student who's behind this?

As I said above, I think that going off the crime times is a bit sketchy, but I'll roll with it.

What are your thoughts on Light to throw the police off the scent staying up to kill people 23 hours out of the day?

For the sake of the story, I like that he's trying to provoke them. If he only thought that he would throw them off and didn't realize that it would directly point to him having access to classified information, that would just make him stupid.

Thoughts on the police worried Light might try to kill them?

I'd be with the group handing in their resignment letters.

Thoughts on Ryuk saying Light is being followed?

Keeping his toy alive, I like it.

Thoughts on Ryuk saying he's not on Light's side or L's side?

The popcorn tastes better from a comfy seat.

Thoughts on Ryuk saying they are able to take human lifespans for themselves?

Mysterious entities doing mysterious things. It's kind of like demons in Frieren, where they don't hold any irrationally malicious feelings towards humans, but they live off being humans' enemies.

Thoughts on the name and lifespan for the Shinigami appear above a human's head?

Oh fun, no wonder they're always bored, if they have cheat skills.

What are your thoughts on Ryuk proposing Light giving up half his lifespan in exchange of acquiring the eyes of a God of Death?

More shit stirring, I like it.

Thoughts on misinformation spreading about the Kira case?

A very realistic development. Makes the case feel all more real.

That it does

This is such a specific reference, but it reminds me of the details of Chris Benoit and his family's deaths being revealed on Wikipedia before it was actually announced. That was just reckless speculation.

Yeah, do students normally go to bed at 2 AM? When I was in high school, I went to bed at like midnight.

Indeed

It does create an interesting debate on moral ambiguity.

It feels a bit of a stretch

It feels like such an insane overcorrection. I love it lol

I'd be with the group handing in their resignment letters.

A Wikipedia vandal who made a wild speculation and was right. "Detectives called the posting an "unbelievable hindrance" to their investigation" lmao, interesting piece of internet history.

And the IP address was traced back to Connecticut which is where WWE headquarters were located. It's such an insane series of coincidences.

damn this is a lot better than i expectead

What are your thoughts on Light’s father being the person in charge of the Kira case?

a fucking sick twist in concept, wanna see how it plays out

---

L looks more like the villain than Light tbh

L is asking the right questions holy shit

Keep speaking the truth

Damn he's using his dad

He can control time of death

L is so fucking smart

I like that he's so cocky he wants to hunt L

Name and lifespan known

That's crazy

2

u/Holofan4life 11d ago

I think Light’s family will be the deciding factor in his moral compass. If he starts killing them, then he has finally become a criminal himself.

if the imouto dies we riot
