Pandora Hearts ep 14

Is this Jack in Alice's memory, or....?
Break episode? How long are we going to spent in C.C.'s domain?
- Oz didn't fall into the looking glass...or are those just shiny walls?
- Jack is DEFINITELY lurking around Abyss...
- But this isn't really the Abyss??? Is that Jack just a memory?
- Gil trying to protect Oz from the dude who obviously saved Oz
- Sharon looks just like her mom
- Dude, you just said you weren't in her memories, but you're the Jack she remembers?
- CALLED IT (after a few tries)
- Everything is confusing.
- It's going to be the wrong Alice...
SO, everybody in the palace who wasn't dead was cast into the abyss: Alice, Vincent, Gil. And Jack at the center. Pandora pulled Vincent and Gil out of the Abyss, and were independently adopted by the Nightrays and Bezarius.
But Alice was killed....
And how did Vincent kill everybody in the Palace?
New savage genius ED.
We learned nothing about Break or his eye. Just his chain, which didn't do anything.

But this isn't really the Abyss??? Is that Jack just a memory?
It was mentioned that he's a fragment from Alice's memory. This isn't the abyss nor earth its somewhere inbetween Break made a comment about that when he was "caught" .
Everything is confusing
It do be like that. Any answers we get bring up more questions.
We learned nothing about Break or his eye. Just his chain, which didn't do anything.
It put the fear of
GodKami into Cheshire Neko so there's that.1

Is this Jack in Alice's memory, or....?
He's not part of her memory, but a soul fragment, whatever that means.
Oz didn't fall into the looking glass...or are those just shiny walls?
Look like mirrors to me
But this isn't really the Abyss??? Is that Jack just a memory?
Not the Abyss; Cheshire's special dimension
Gil trying to protect Oz from the dude who obviously saved Oz
Maybe he's suspicious of Jack for some reason?
Dude, you just said you weren't in her memories, but you're the Jack she remembers?
She remembers him, but he being there isn't because he's a memory. He's an interloper I guess
But Alice was killed....
And how did Vincent kill everybody in the Palace?
We learned nothing about Break or his eye.
Just his chain, which didn't do anything.
It erased Cheshire's arm?

Kind of mean to start it like this right after the scene where Alice was apparently killed in the past, lol? But the art is pretty cute.
Anyway, this episode was, uh, a lot, and I have a bit of a headache, so I'll keep it relatively short, but I do enjoy how this show just throws me back into the Mystery Abyss™ whenever I feel like I'm starting to get a grasp of things haha.
Gil and Vince were actually from 100 years ago too! I'd say that puts a bit of a damper on my earlier theory that Vincent took Break's eye, but at this point, who knows, It doesn't seem that out there that Break would also be from back then. Which is why he's so driven to put together this mystery as well. Regardless, Vincent was apparently quite an active part back in the Tragedy, and he "Did it for Gil". That seems a little doubtful, but at least, assuming he wasn't crazy from the start, I do understand where he got it from... He's also blaming "Him" for this, but who that might be remains unknown. (Break? Jack? Whoever Glen Baskerville was?) How exactly he and Gil presumably went to the Abyss and popped back out is, of course, also a mystery. Gil at least knew Jack back then, but alas, Gil's trauma response blocks me from any answers
The other big thing here is Alice originally being a human, which, by itself, I don't find that surprising. Or like, that's kind of the assumption I've been working with since the start basically. Her apparently being killed, though, is very surprising, and I'd sure love to know the who, why, and what after of that! I suppose it'd make sense if "The day she lost everything" would also include her life? Guess we'll have to wait and see, but I am intrigued from end to end. Also, I really like Oz's little speech about Alice! Given that he'd spent a lot of his life either trying really hard to live up to expectation or not expressing genuine emotion under a veil of adaptability and acceptance, he'd find Alice's very strong willfulness and often straightforward expression really powerful and important! And he notices her loneliness!
Oh, and Mad Hatter looks cool as fuck too. Maybe not quite flaming dark unicorn tier, but I love the eye for Break and the abstractness

I will say despite you saying your head is spinning. You seem to have a good grasp of the situation were in. Given the information we have you know about as much as you reasonably can. I don't think you need to worry about being confused, ALOT was thrown at us at once with more reveals to come.
The other big thing here is Alice originally being a human, which, by itself, I don't find that surprising.
Same even my first time, Its hard to imagine her as not a human since she acted soooo human, we knew something had to be up, alongside her having memories presumably as a human it made no sense for her to always have been a chain.
Her apparently being killed, though, is very surprising
It really is one of the biggest WTF moments of the series. To think one of our MCs was actually murdered and we only know about it half way through the anime is pretty insane in retrospect.

YESSSS. Thank you for noticing. There's a reason Oz is attracted to Alice so much. Shes essentially everything he wishes he was. I love how he knows this himself and wants to help her above all else. He knows their both lonely and he wants to be there for her, even if she can be a bit much at times NGL.
Gil's trauma response blocks me from any answers

That's pretty reassuring to hear haha!

Yeah, their relationship and how they play into each other's characters like that really has been one of the stronger and more endearing aspects of the show so far. And given not just the amount of time left in the show, but also the even larger chunk of the manga left after that, I'd imagine there's plenty more room for that to grow!

The manga story after where the anime leaves off is even better; I encourage anyone who likes the anime to keep reading!

Vincent is super sus, but I imagine the experience was quite traumatic for a small child.
He's also blaming "Him" for this, but who that might be remains unknown. (Break? Jack? Whoever Glen Baskerville was?)
I think my subs had "Her" there

Here's a small treat for everyone. Alice initially had no physical body was a twin tailed maid named Mary Ann as the heroine of the story. So a kind of proto Alice directly from the first art book.
I wonder how things would've been different if this were the case, with Alice being murdered and all.

I think this worked, I tried to upload something special for episode 5 that didn't work. So I'll upload that during the final discussion. But now that I got imgur to work I'll see if any relevant material from either of the art books I own come up like this here.

how can you do an Alice adventure without Alice????

So, even a cat can become a Chain somehow?
Also, Oz really doesn't know when to stop talking sometimes...
I've just noticed, Cheshire has his right eye covered and his left visible - Break has his right eye visible and his left is missing. They both made the same statement about how Oz looks to their eyes. Are we going to get a reveal that they both have a single eye from the same pair?
It is too early in this shows runtime for Jack to be the helpful mentor figure that hangs around til the end - either he is going to get killed in a couple of episodes, he is already dead and its his spirit who is helping, or he is going to turn out to be a bad guy - those are my predictions.
Alice really has been opening up to Oz a fair bit, thats nice to see.
"I'm not omnipotent in this dimension" - thus implying there is a dimension that Jack IS omnipotent in? Perhaps he is hiding in the Abyss, using its time shenanigans to jump into the future now.
Why is a fragment of Jacks soul in Alice? Did it happen as a part of the process that turned her (and her pet cat) into chains?
Ok, Breaks chain looks all sorts of cool. Is that an eye in the centre of it? Did Break have to sacrifice his eye to contract with his chain?
After Sablier was dropped into the Abyss, did the newley chainified Alice kill everyone as the B-Rabbit? If so, no wonder she wanted to forget everything if that was people she knew.
So, Vincent and Gil were in Sablier, and ended up in the abyss - Gil somehow lost his memories in the process of escaping, but didn't become an illegal contractor. Did he perhaps use on the the Abyss gates held by the Dukedoms to escape? Probably the Vasselius one, since thats where he ended up.
So, Vincent did something to 'help' Gil, and it caused the tradgedy, and drove him mad? Poor child, I wonder how much of that he remembers. No wonder he didn't want Gil to remember anything, if he also saw all that. I assume the 'she' he is blaming is Alice, somehow?
Is the show deliberately trying to imply that the child Vincent killed Alice after the Tradgedy of Sablier, because he somehow blamed her for it, or did him killing her to 'help' Gilbert somehow cause it, which is why he blamed her?
The fact that the preview calls the next episode 'Who killed poor Alice' implies that it isn't the simple answer - considering how broken Oz looks in the preview I am guessing that either Oz himself somehow appears to have done it, or perhaps it was Gil. Conspiracy theory for the episode - Jack killed Alice for some reason.

They're good for each other and help each other with where their lacking. I really enjoy their dynamic.
Why is a fragment of Jacks soul in Alice? Did it happen as a part of the process that turned her (and her pet cat) into chains?
Presumably its because she knew Jack and this is just the version of Jack Alice knew initially.
Is the show deliberately trying to imply that the child Vincent killed Alice after the Tradgedy of Sablier, because he somehow blamed her for it, or did him killing her to 'help' Gilbert somehow cause it, which is why he blamed her?
I feel that's the implication but we don't have many suspects as of right now though.

Yes, apparently!

Hopefully we will learn more about Jack.

MAD HATTER!?
After Sablier was dropped into the Abyss, did the newley chainified Alice kill everyone as the B-Rabbit? If so, no wonder she wanted to forget everything if that was people she knew.
Could be!?
So, Vincent and Gil were in Sablier, and ended up in the abyss - Gil somehow lost his memories in the process of escaping, but didn't become an illegal contractor. Did he perhaps use on the the Abyss gates held by the Dukedoms to escape? Probably the Vasselius one, since thats where he ended up.
Gil probably doesn't want to remember; he could be suppressing them.
Poor Vincent? He's still a little shit, but I admit he's gone through a lot. Maybe it isn't his fault after all?
Is the show deliberately trying to imply that the child Vincent killed Alice after the Tradgedy of Sablier, because he somehow blamed her for it, or did him killing her to 'help' Gilbert somehow cause it, which is why he blamed her?

First-time
Everything is really coming together.
As expected, Alice indeed was there during the tragedy. She had to witness everything, and no wonder why really wanted to discard those memories or how cursed into a Chain. Even back in her life she did indeed had any connection the B-Rabbit. And obtaining her memory fragments is supposed to reclaim her humanity, if we consider this in the long run.
And it was also expected, even the Nightrays played a role as well. Also Vincent's presence is another reason why this family are truly the bloodstained ones. He proclaimedhe did nothing wrong, but I can assume he just commited murders (Alice included?) and probably started the fire in the castle? Not just him and Gilbert is also comes from the past, so they must have spent a long time in the Abyss, thus they got over with it. No way they are Baskervilles.
And this Jack is actually not the real Jack, but rather how he remained in Alice's memories. Basically the Jack from the perspective of Alice.
Or maybe is something is wrong and altered with the memories, like it is the PoV of Alice? This means what we seen here is actually not the same as it exactly happened in history. It could be another possibility too.
And also leads to another possibility. Break could have been alive back there, but still unconfirmed.
Man, there are lots of theorycrafting possibilities here.
We have a new ED too, which was kinda surprising.
1) What connection do Vincent and Gil have to Jack and the Tragedy of Sablier?
They were on the different side I guess.
2) Are you surprised the Chain Alice is a former human?
Well, not so much. It was heavily imlpied.

The more answers that get shown the less we know.
And it was also expected, even the Nightrays played a role as well.
Technically the Nightrays are right beside is Vessalius since Gil is technically a Nightray now. Plus during one of the earlier episodes Gil said its not the light that connects them but the darkness (little edgelord) . So the Nightways really do seem to have more impact on the story then initially thought.
Man, there are lots of theorycrafting possibilities here.
The Jun Mochizuki experience in a nutshell. So much happens and you can only sit and wonder and theory craft since there are so many possibilities.

Jack and Oz having the same hair color and surname should tell you all you need to know about them. I think it was even exposition several episodes ago how Jack was a hero from a long time ago. I love the scenes with Jack. he's a pretty boy but he's so cool in the anime when he debuts.
I don't understand what Break did with Chesire Cat. I understood he used his Chain the mad Hatter. What I don't get is that before this he seemed to come from two different directions.
Vincinet and Gil being from the past. Oz is like "that's impossible" but he's the same as them. Interestingly they did so without forming contracts. We know chains sometimes appear randomly in the real world but without a contractor they quickly disappear. Perhaps they stumbled on a temporary exit. Although given Gil was unconscious when found by the Vessalius family, he would have to had been carried by his brother.
Break, please tell me you had an exit plan that did not involve Sharon bringing a rescue party.
Oh looks like Alice is dead. This looks more like Episode 1 Alice than normal Alice though. Although this is probably an unpleasant memory, this is probably not the one where she learned "everything" since... well she's dead.
When I watched this the first time I wasn't surprised Chain Alice was a former human. In fact as I said (but probably too late to the post for anyone to read) here at ShadowGuyinRealLife comments on Pandora Hearts Rewatch - Episode 13 there were a lot of signs Alice the girl was her default form and not the B Rabbit even if she prides herself as the latter. In fact the only indication Alice was a chain and not some human stranded there like Gil was that she successfully formed a contract with Oz and she is said to be a chain in the exposition at least 10 times.

Oz is like "that's impossible" but he's the same as them.
It puts something that should be impossible into the realm of impossible to possible since we saw it in real time with Oz.
Although given Gil was unconscious when found by the Vessalius family, he would have to had been carried by his brother.
Break, please tell me you had an exit plan that did not involve Sharon bringing a rescue party.
Don't worry he'll make a break for it. So alls good.
Oh looks like Alice is dead. This looks more like Episode 1 Alice than normal Alice though. Although this is probably an unpleasant memory, this is probably not the one where she learned "everything" since... well she's dead.
It makes sense why she ran away when she first entered Chesire's dimension. Though like you mentioned her clothes and look is closer to ep 1 Alice as opposed to current Alice.
When I watched this the first time I wasn't surprised Chain Alice was a former human
This was one of the worst kept "secrets". Alice being a human was obvious to everyone, since she acts so much like one as opposed to other chains. Granted we did get the Jun Mochizuki special of her answering one thing (Was Alice a human) and then we got 2 more questions, How'd she become a chain? and Who killed poor Alice? The more we know the more questions arise.
That's a really good observation!

He even has the same tufts of hair that Oz does!
I think it was even exposition several episodes ago how Jack was a hero from a long time ago. I love the scenes with Jack. he's a pretty boy but he's so cool in the anime when he debuts.
He has similar vibes (and VA!) to Sinbad from Magi, another fan-favorite.
I don't understand what Break did with Chesire Cat. I understood he used his Chain the mad Hatter. What I don't get is that before this he seemed to come from two different directions.
I think Break pretended to get trapped in the mirror memory, waiting for Cheshire to show up so he could ambush him? And use Mad Hatter's power to erase the kitty's arm.
Vincinet and Gil being from the past. Oz is like "that's impossible" but he's the same as them. Interestingly they did so without forming contracts

I guess humans can become Chains? [PH anime]Do they have to die to do so, or can living humans dropped into Abyss become Chains too?

- Vincent has a screw or two loose
- "It's all HER fault"?
- Vince AND Gil are from 100 years ago?

I'm at roughly 50 hours at week right now, I get it no worries. I also work rotating shifts so my schedule is MESSED UP.
Being an adult is tough. If it were any other series, I probably would have stopped commenting, but this is numero uno series so I'll try my best to comment even if I'm a bit late as well.
Do what you can and try not to push your self too much. The threads have had a decent amount of activity with new comments even a day later. So being perfectly on time with each new thread isn't a big deal right now imo.

"You're here but you're nowhere" Words to describe Oz?
Words that seem to really impact Oz. Compared to how he described Alice being someone sure of herself and trying to get her memories back.

Better then the typical anime "it was a gas leak/ explosion" in so so many shows.
"until that moment, she was human"? ... did Vincent murder Alice?
We just don't know enough. As you mentioned Vincent was running around saying "its not my fault". So its a possibility, but we don't have many suspects right now.
I don't like the new ED's song as much, but the art is nice
I have to agree. I LOVE the art. But the song is eh. Not bad, but not memorable. So much so I actually forgot there was an ED 2 despite how much I love this series and listen to the OST pretty regularly. ED 2 essentially is never in my rotation. I'll give it a couple listens and see if it grows on me

So much so I actually forgot there was an ED 2 despite how much I love this series and listen to the OST pretty regularly. ED 2 essentially is never in my rotation. I'll give it a couple listens and see if it grows on me
Same here; I like ED1's song but forgot there was an ED2.

Re watcher and manga reader:
This is where the meat and true mysteries of the show really start to be shown to the audience. There's so much to unpack here.
Alice alone in a tower with Jack climbing a tree to see and or meet her for some reason.
Where is Oz, what does it mean?
Break is breaking out.
Oz wants to be with Alice since shes "always honest with herself". He sees her as a light. I love this line. It really solidifies how Oz sees Alice and himself. How he doesnt know where he is and is lost but Alice is moving forward.
Then Oz saw Vincent. As ive mentioned people with heterochromia in anime almost always have baggage. We now know Vincent and Gil are likely from 100 years and Vincent at least saw the tragedy of Sablire. They were both found outside Duke houses and adopted. Damn did they get lucky with who adopted them. Both getting into Dukedoms though Gil as a servant and Vincent as an actual family member.
Here it is. Alice dead on the floor of a tower 100 years ago during the tragedy of Sablier. When she was murdered. Since as Jack said she was a human at one point. Two questions spring to my head HOW and WHY? What TF is happening. Plus we also know Alice created this dimension to seal her most fearful memories. The ones of her death. Now it makes sense why she ran away initially when she entered this place. So Alice shattered her memories presumably since she wanted to forget but now she wants to remember but is afraid since clearly who wants to remember their own death? Shes not Natsuki Subaru (from Re:Zero) no one wants to remember their death note Alice nor Subaru.
QOTD:
Its not surprising Alice was a human. But like everything else it raises more questions. How did she become a chain. Are all chains previously humans and she retained more of herself?

Why is she isolated like that?
Where is Oz, what does it mean?
Maybe he's invisible?

Pandora First-Timer, subbed
Oof…
So there is a connection between Break and Cheshire Cat?
Jack’s resemblance to Oz (or would it be the other way around?) is even stronger when they’re right next to each other like this.
…huh. Is that why he was able to address Gilbert in a previous episode & talk to both him and Oz now?
Ah, Break planned for this.
Whoaaaaaaaaaa…
Now who’s watching Oz…
Oh shit, did Oz just come across a memory of that tragedy from a century ago?
wtf?
Vincent? But this is a century ago??????
Yeah… Did they end up in Abyss for that long but then make it out at some point?
It would’ve been just like Oz, huh…
Well. Shit.
Oh, I wasn’t expecting a second ED though.
