Jonathan

I’m watching 30 Rock for the first time and am currently in season 5. Jonathan’s character arc to me is odd - he initially started out as super competent, but it seems now he’s just listing over Jack like Smithers to Mr. Burns.

A quick search on this thread shows people really love him, but I find him annoying. Without spoilers, does that change, or is it just me and I’m missing something?

Jonathan’s relationship with Jack is one of the funniest aspects of the show. It fuels his hatred of Liz which is also gold. He doesn’t get overused which is nice. It’s the perfect amount.

She has so many unsolvable problems. Like her mouth. It looks like someone kicked in a bag of flour.😡😑

She’s wearing it up today, but it’s not really working.

I’ve used “face looks like someone kicked a hole in a bag of flower” more often than I should just WAITING for someone to call out where it came from but most of the time people just laugh and assume it’s my joke. A few months ago I used it in the bravo real housewives group and the 30 Rock people showed themselves! 🤪 it was like a warm hug

I love when my worlds crossover. Especially with so many references to housewives in 30 Rock!

We’re a small group but we’re mighty!

I need to add that insult to my database. It’s such a specific and clever burn.

Jonathan doesn't have a character arc.

He’s such an important character because he’s the dark mirror of Kenneth. They’re both relentlessly obsequious and resourceful and intelligent in their own ways, but their motivations are very different.

242

u/whatifithurts 3d ago

And Kenneth can fit through a wire hanger so much faster.

That’s because he can unhinge his pelvis.

Jonathan’s unwavering commitment is to Jack while Kenneth’s unwavering commitment is to NBC.

130

u/Resident_Course_3342 3d ago

Kenneth's commitment is to an immortal being whose real name, if you heard it, would make you lose your mind.

Character arc?

Look, we’re all obsessed with 30Rock here, but we’re not THAT obsessed.

Stop being a Jonathan.

24

The irony is, my name is Jonathan. Maybe it’s actually self hatred?

I love this show, I love every bit and actor, and this relationship plus the time Pete gets his hand stuck in the vending machine, do indeed feel very Simpsons

Him throwing stuff at the phone and getting his own extension is so funny. Especially hearing the yell in his office.

There is a Simpsons episode where Homer’s hand gets stuck in the veding machine: Marge on the Lam (the Thelma and Louise episode), it’s my favourite The Simpsons episode, very funny!

first time i watched the show, he was slightly irritating to me also. felt like a cartoon of a gay man. but then every character on the show is a cartoon version of something… just keep watching it over and over a few hundred times and you’ll arrive at a deep appreciation.

127

u/CrouchingDomo Well I ate that goat. 3d ago

I can’t decide when he clicked for me; it was either “Even if I get into medical school—I won’t go!” or the topless flute video (that’s personal).

21

Same here. It used to annoy me just cause it IS so Smithers to Burns and tropey. But the more I watch the more I appreciate Jonathan and his comedic screams.

4

u/farsiderules 2d ago

Makes sense - thanks!

6

u/JayMoots 2d ago

Is it canon that Jonathan is gay? I’m not sure he ever read that way to me.

Only for Jamie.

I can see that - thanks!!

35

u/ExpertPicture5160 3d ago

No. No you didn’t.

21

u/ajc89 3d ago

That describes most characters on the show. If you stop a season 5 episode and then go back to a random early season 1 episode, it's like a little culture shock. Jenna and Tracy especially but most of the characters go from fairly normal to completely ridiculous over the top, and most of the time it's hilarious.

19

u/IAmAGodKalEl Nice to meet you, I'm British 3d ago

One important thing to realize about 30 Rock is every single character ends up Flanderized and ridiculous to some degree. Just enjoy the ride.

Jack’s disdain for him is so funny in some scenes: “Jonathan, why don’t you put on more of that cologne.”

For what it’s worth, I never used to find Kenneth funny. His character was fine, just not funny. Now some of his lines and line reads do make me laugh.

5

u/chrisgee 2d ago

isn't he shown to be super protective of Jack in one of the first episodes ("Jack-tor") when he shows Liz the tape of Jack taking a full week to record a 30 second ad? he does get a bit more Smithersy as time goes on but it doesn't seem like a huge shift.

5

u/late_afternoon_owl 3d ago

By the end he's a main character.

In the last season he has more scenes than Tracy.

3

u/IWannaSayMason 3d ago

Last verse Jonathan.

Because him just being a normal character isn't funny.

These lists also work with Brooklyn 99, the series shares many jokes and bits including getting my stuck in the vending machine..

character getting a vasectomy then changing their mind last minute + anesthesia and wanting more kids

erasing a message before another character can discover it + hijinks

sound weapon only young people can hear

seasonal affective disorder reference

Salieri v Mozart joke re: envy

character makes a soundboard of another character’s voice.

..

3

u/Alert-Pea-7433 2d ago

I agree the pivot is there and unnecessary. Given some other scenes that are not race sensitive--unnecessarily and unhumorously-- especially for Toofer (two for), I wonder if Fey/writers downgraded him to token. Those were my thoughts!

1

u/farsiderules 2d ago

That’s one thing I’ve seen too - the token “Indian” jokes

1

u/pachyderm63 2d ago

I hadn't thought of the Smithers comparison but that's good. It just gets a bit tiresome and one-note though.
