When printing with wave overhangs larger unsupported surfaces can warp quite a bit. In this experiment I try an idea that was left in the comments of my youtube video by @ShadowMooselndustries
I think it would be cool to do a 45 degree or so guy-wire extrusion from the edge of the wave support region to the build plate, simulated to avoid collision with the extruder. That singular extrusion or a couple could hold down the overhang region for the next few layers.
While using some sort of minimal support to hold the surface down against warping is something I definitely already thought of and tried, I did not think of printing that support downward from the overhanging surface onto the buildplate.
It's a really crazy idea, so I wanted to try it out, and this is the result. It seems to me like the reason it fails is that the warping is very immediate as soon as the zig-zag is done, so by the time the anti-supports are in place it is already warped. That is a bit unexpected though, since I had previously observed that warping starts only once I print on top of the unsupported layer.
Naturally, this approach is rather unpractical due to the clearance issue and collision risk, nonetheless I thought it fun to try. Even if I could get it to work, it wouldn't really offer benefits over just printing minimal supports the normal way -- from the build plate up. I just enjoy seeing 3d printers move in ways they're not supposed to.

Print only a portion of the overhang then radially print downward to bed from the printed portion, then continue printing more of the overhang.

Oh hey I'm `@ShadowMooselndustries` on youtube. Neat to see my idea implemented. It's a shame it didn't work on account of the immediate warping before it could even get to the wire section.

How did you generate this GCode? Did you just generate the wave overhang piece and manually insert the support lines? I'm always curious about how to try wacky new things in GCode without giving up all the embedded knowledge in slicers about speeds, corners, feed rates, etc.

First sliced as usual with wave overhangs, then the g-code was edited by Claude.

Try LLMs in agentic mode. Astra was able to directly edit 3mf to paint seams without any guidance, I think it could edit gcode too if you give it some examples and link to paxx12 git.

why not a simple support on the right side?

Yeah that is more straight forward, and works rather well. This was more trying a crazy idea.

What kind of 3d printer is that? Looks okay.

I feel like the hardware is pretty good and the next improvements are going to see are in the realm of fancy slicing like this.

whats the deflection vs overhang? could you throw in a support when the overhang gets too far for the deflection?

There's a much lazier solution. If you rotate the part 180 degrees, you can print it perfectly without any supports! 😛

Can't you print considering the possible arch from the warping and weight?

Yeah it should be possible. It's on my list of things to try!

You are doing amazing work. Can't wait until this type of innovation makes it into regular slicers for the rest of the world! Keep it up!

That's cool to see in action, but yeah, doesn't seem to really constrain the warping.
Side note, is there a good way to get wave overhangs working in the latest Orca version? The github release is a bit behind at this point, have had a few crashes.
