Project My Iron Man Prime Suit

Haven’t posted in a while because I haven’t really had anything new. Just crunched finishing Prime right before New York comic con. I’ve had the suit printed and halfway test fitted for over a year. But about three weeks before NYCC I decided to rush and finish it.

Luckily, 95% of it was printed in ASA so between being able to vapor smooth half of the parts and the other half being unbelievably easy to sand, I was able to cross through it super fast. Not a single filament I have ever tested Sands as easily and smooth as ASA. Literally one pass of 220 gritt and it’s ready for prime (ha)

The first time I wore, the entire suit was at New York comicon on Saturday. And luckily, seven years of trial and error in hindsight, and seeing how all of my friends and other builders make suits and the failure points of them help me avoid account for any thing that could go wrong.

The entire cod piece and neck is TPU and eventually the abs section will be as well.

Printed mostly on Bambu lab machines.

Printed mostly in Polymaker filament.

Wow! Can I ask what brand asa you were using and how long you let them sit in the vapor?

PolyMaker ASA. About 30-35 minutes

Do you do wet or dry sanding? By hand or with a tool? I'm working on a mark III, and I just cannot seem to get this mirror finish.

Dry sand to 220. Prime. Wet sand to 400. Paint

Love that color red. What brand and color if you don’t mind?

Very cool! I've been thinking of getting those files for an infamous iron man suit. Haven't worked with ASA yet though.

ASA is honestly one of the most forgiving filaments for finishing. Like OP said, it sands way easier than PLA or PETG. The vapor smoothing is the part that takes some practice, but if you're already comfortable printing ABS you're basically there.

Wow. How long does it take you to get in and out of that? Can you breathe OK in the mask and is it breathable for your skin?

About 10 minutes to put on. And yeah the mask isn’t air tight

Curious how physically fit are you? What's your approximate height and weight to get this look?

I’m in pretty good shape I think. 5’8 and 180lbs. Athletic build. The shoes lift me up 2” and the helmet ads another 1”

u/howdyzach 6h ago

jesus christ dude that's not an "athletic build". You are fucking jacked!

u/njtricker609 6h ago

Haha thank you. I guess I’m just used to me now? So it all depends who you talk to. I cut a little after that photo and being thinner definitely helps it into the suit lol
