I believe it was "The Evolution of Hip-Hop" on Netflix they were talking about this as well as the reverb. They were so high and thought there was to much reverb in the beat until they took it down and played it in a car stereo and said dayum leave it. Something like that..

I recreated this beat back in the 80's lot's of reverb came out nice. I bought a 909 hoping get the booming bass only to find out It was the 808 that had that I still loved it. The demand went up for the 909 when acid, house and techno got popular.
