u/jessijuana 5h ago

And you're still on reddit with the rest of us

I got it every year till the mile run started dropping below 7 minutes. Couldn’t do it. Always sucked at cardio.

34

u/trickman01 9h ago

I don’t even think I could reach it these days.

23

u/blueswordgonturan 7h ago

I couldn’t even reach it as a kid!

u/SnooDogs1340 7h ago

Same. I didn't realize how tight might legs were from being slight knocked kneed and always walking on tippy toes. Such a shame it took until adulthood to understand.

If you are willing to properly stretch your hamstrings and glutes on the daily for like a season, then it's never too late to dominate this test lol.

This was a humiliation ritual for me

22

u/jeckles 8h ago

Anyone else remember the Pacer as nothing more than a humiliation ritual? Those beeps still haunt me.

u/cheezbargar 7h ago

I hated this. I’ve always been super inflexible

u/RewrittenSol 4h ago

I actually was the opposite. This is the only thing I could do that I broke my school's record on. Other than that, I was pretty shit at everything else. From what I know since I kept in contact with my teacher after left school, my record stood as long as he still worked there.

u/YoungAmsterdam 8h ago

I remember I shattered the all-time historical school record for the sit-and-reach when I was in Jr. High. Prior to that, I had no idea I was more flexible than anyone else because I literally was the least active kid in school. Felt like I had just been given the world's strangest superpower.

Oh wow I forgot about that thing

u/waveolimes 7h ago

This in tandem with my weight being shouted out in a line of pre-pubescent girls who were all in line to have our measurements taken.

Guess who was one of the first to weigh over 100lbs!

Guess how everyone knew!!

YEP. I was an early bloomer who got boobs way before anyone else (9 years old 😭) and always struggled with my weight even as a kid so I already got made fun of, but having the number called out was so humiliating.

Is that the fuckin woman from Superstore

My gym teacher permanently damaged a girl's back by forcing her to stretch beyond her limits. Put both hands below her shoulder blades and shoved her down until the teacher was happy with the results, even as the girl cried in pain.

That teacher was still there the next year. I don't have a clue how, or what happened to my classmate, as she never came back.

2

u/vanityinlines 5h ago

I'm sure her parents loved that. Some teachers are wild.

1

u/fuzzypurpledragon 3h ago

I honestly don't understand how some schools keep teachers.like this. Why would you want to open yourself up to lawsuits?

u/tapnap-or-snap 7h ago

I have a daughter in 5th grade and showed her this and shes said they recently did this. Its still around crazy

deep inhale

The FitnessGram™ Pacer Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The 20 meter pacer test will begin in 30 seconds. Line up at the start. The running speed starts slowly, but gets faster each minute after you hear this signal. [beep] A single lap should be completed each time you hear this sound. [ding] Remember to run in a straight line, and run as long as possible. The second time you fail to complete a lap before the sound, your test is over. The test will begin on the word start. On your mark, get ready, start.

This and crunches were something I was always good at. Everything else sucked.

u/LucySkyDiamonds19 7h ago

😡

Hated that thing as a kid but then I just hated P.E. in general.

u/Starfish9776 6h ago edited 5h ago

Oh that thing. I've never been that flexible so that thing always won

2

u/GonnaKostya 6h ago

I was always horrible at this. I'm generally flexible but this murders the backs of my legs.

Grade school memories

5

u/Aguyintampa323 8h ago

To show how outdated our government is , these are still used for government agency physical fitness tests

6

u/reporthazard 7h ago

what's wrong with the sit and reach?

7

u/Aguyintampa323 7h ago

I’m not a physical trainer so I’m sure they could explain it better , but they aren’t actually a measure of “fitness” so much as they are flexibility. You can have good muscle definition, good cardio , good strength, but not necessarily be flexible. Everyone is different and flexibility isn’t necessarily an indicator of good nor poor performance.

1

u/TeamSansBoat 6h ago

So good flexibility but poor muscle definition means you aren't fit?

1

u/Crusaruis28T 4h ago

I'm not an expert but generally good flexibility will make up for poor definition but poor definition can cause or be the cause of other healthy issues.

Poor flexibility won't really cause other issues especially if you have good definition elsewhere

1

u/TeamSansBoat 4h ago

That's so insanely wrong it hurts my head. Please don't speak on things you know nothing about

1

u/AsteroidMike 6h ago

Think my high school had a few of these that we used during my freshman year.

1

u/itsarmida 6h ago

I would always extend past the box and nobody ever said that could be bad too lolol

1

u/timaclover 6h ago

When I was in fifth grade they used to put a piece of licorice at the point I needed to get to as an incentive.

1

u/evlhornet 5h ago

NOOOOOOO!!!!

I am super stiff. The coach looked at me and asked “are you serious”

1

u/oldsaltylady 5h ago

The one thing I aced in gym class.

1

u/Ok-Writer-notsogreat 4h ago

Have scoliosis and was forced to stretch hard down and it was always torture.

1

u/DM725 4h ago

I failed on this every year.

1

u/BJPM90 4h ago

My negative sit and reach kept me from Presidential fitness glory.

1

u/Zwomann 4h ago

This was the only Presidential Fitness task I was good at

1

u/ARumpusOfWildThings 3h ago

Oh man, this was the bane of my existence in PE from 4th-8th grade, and again in 10th grade Health/PE class, all throughout the 2000s…I could never push the marker thingy down far enough, not even when I hurled my upper trunk forward with as much momentum as I could manage. 😮‍💨

1

u/reveillemoname 3h ago

This was the only thing in PE I ever liked. I’ve struggled with my weight for my entire life and had a terrible time with anything athletic as a kid, and PE was always humiliating for me. BUT I also have hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, so this was the only thing I ever excelled at in PE haha. Always freaked people out because I could reach past the farthest mark and around to the back of the box without really even trying. Yeah, maybe I was always red and winded and miserable and walked the mile, Jessica, but I set the record on the sit and reach. Remind me what records you set?? 💁‍♀️ Haha

u/InTheWorldButNotOfIt 3h ago

When I was a kid and all I did was play hockey in my free time, I could touch my nose to my knees when stretching. Loved this test in gym class lol.

u/kingkellogg 6h ago

Always loved this thing growing up
