Summary: You've snuck out to a party once again, and once again, your bodyguard shows up to drag you back home. But as he tries to escort you to his car, the mood suddenly shifts. There's always been something unspoken between the two of you, and tonight, with you standing so close to each other, the temptation to cross that line is almost impossible to resist.

[The music and chatter are deafening as the Speaker makes his way through the crowd. He pushes past people dancing and drinking and heads straight for the Listener who’s sitting on a couch]
(stern) You. Get up. We’re leaving.
*pause*
Yes, you. I don’t see anyone else here I could possibly be talking to.
*pause*
(scoffs) Who am I? Very funny. If you're too drunk to remember something as simple as that, then it’s about time you went home.
*pause*
That wasn’t a suggestion. You’re coming with me. Either you walk out of here willingly, or I’ll throw you over my shoulder. Your choice. Though I seem to recall you weren’t particularly fond of the latter the last time I did it.
*pause*
Don’t you give me those puppy dog eyes like I’m not allowed to be mad.
I just had to drive across the entire city in the middle of the night to pick you up. From a place you weren't even supposed to be at, no less.
*pause*
You don’t care one bit, do you?
*pause*
You’re on thin ice, sweetheart. I’m not in the mood for games. This is your last chance to get up on your own before I make you.
(warningly) Three…
*pause*
Two- (exasperated) Are you actually giggling right now? You really don't know when to stop.
One…
*pause*
All right, fine. If you're not listening to me, maybe you'll listen to your father. (sarcastic) I'm sure he’d love to hear that you've snuck out - again - and that he’ll have to come pick you up himself because you’re not following your bodyguard’s orders. Hey, he could even meet all your friends, wouldn’t that be great?
[The Listener shoots up from the couch]
(huffs, amused) Would you look at that. I suppose your father isn’t as easy to forget, hm?
Come on, princess. Move it.
*pause*
I know. I’m so mean. Can we go then?
*pause*
(sighs) What is it?
*pause*
(annoyed) Seriously? No. I don’t want you to introduce me to your friends.
*pause*
Yeah, that’s the whole point. They don’t know me, and it should stay that way. What are you planning to tell them when they ask who I am? The truth clearly isn’t an option.
*pause*
(flustered) What?! You are <not> telling them that I’m your boyfriend.
*pause*
Because I’m not!
*pause*
I absolutely do not have to explain why. (frustrated) God, why do you have to be like this when you’re drunk?
*pause*
(stern) That’s enough. I’m not having this conversation with you. Now walk.
[The Listener finally starts walking]
Wrong direction. The exit’s over there.
*pause*
(groans) No. We are not going to watch the fish tank. For the love of God, just do what you're told for once in your life.
*pause*
I don’t care what you want. You’re making my job unnecessarily difficult. Give me your hand.
*pause*
Not because I want to hold it! I want to make sure you don’t run off the second I look away.
[He grabs the Listener’s hand and drags her along]
There. Keep up or you’ll fall.
[They make their way through the crows and finally step outside. The music fades behind the closed door]
(deep sigh) Alright.
*pause*
What- Don’t yank my hand like that!
*pause*
My car is right here! What are you doing?
*pause*
I said stop! (frustrated) You- Come here.
[He grabs the Listener and pins her against the wall with a soft grunt]
*pause*
(sharp) Quit squirming. You’re not going anywhere.
*pause*
(tense) No. Shut up. Just-... stay quiet. I’m too tired for this bullshit, okay? You’ve had your fun, it’s time to come back to reality. And that means you start listening to me. It can’t be that hard!
*pause*
(Suddenly worried, louder) Mad? I’m not mad, I’m worried! You really don’t understand it, do you? Look at me. Look at me and tell me what the hell you were thinking!
*silence*
(frantic, quieter) Do you have <any> idea what I went through tonight when I realized you weren’t at any of your usual spots?
(scoffs) No, of course you don’t. Because all you care about is rebelling against your father like you can just pretend that target on your back doesn’t exist.
You’re being irresponsible and reckless and… stupid! Have you even once thought about the consequences of your actions? About what could’ve happened if someone recognized you or, God forbid, kidnapped you to use you as leverage against your father?
You can’t keep sneaking out just because nothing has happened so far. One day, you won’t be so lucky. And then what? What am I supposed to do if I fail to bring you back to your father?
*pause*
(stunned, frustrated) You don’t get to say that. I don’t care about your father’s business or what he’ll do to me if I disappoint him. And I’m certainly not doing this for the money. You know that’s not what this is about.
*pause*
Oh, I need to say it out loud, is that what you want? Fine.
I’m here because I care about you too much to forgive myself if anything ever happened to you. I was scared, do you understand? I was scared I might lose you because I failed to protect you. You’re everything to me.
*pause*
(realizing) I… I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.
*pause*
You know why. It’s unprofessional. Your father would kill me if he ever heard me talk about you like this.
*pause*
God, I know you don’t care. That just makes it ten times worse. I’m your bodyguard, remember? We shouldn’t even be having this conversation. Especially not when you’re drunk.
*pause*
Please… Don’t make this harder than it already is, okay? Let’s just get you into the car. You’re shivering.
[The Speaker lets go of the Listener and walks over to the car, opening the passenger door]
Come on. Get in. Careful with your head.
*pause*
Yeah, yeah. I can see how well you can take care of yourself…
[The Listener gets into the car. The Speaker closes the door, then walks to the driver’s side and gets in]
Turn on the heater and get comfortable. Because as soon as your father finds out about this, you won’t have a chance to relax.
*pause*
(huffs) I wasn’t planning to tell him. But I won't have to when you stumble through the door looking like that, slurring every other word. You can’t hide that from him.
*pause*
Well, maybe you should’ve thought about that before drinking so much. You knew the risks. Now you gotta face the consequences.
*pause*
That’s your excuse? There’s no such thing as “your friends made you.” It doesn’t matter what any of them tell you to do. You’re old enough to make your own decisions. And if someone wants you to do something stupid, it’s your responsibility to know better.
*pause*
You can’t be this careless all the time and then blame it on your friends.
Anyone could’ve taken advantage of you in this state. Not just your father’s enemies. You’re a beautiful young woman, and that place was packed with strangers who have zero self-control.
If I hadn’t found you in time, you could be sitting in some other man’s car right now, on your way to some shady hotel where even I’d have trouble tracking you down.
*pause*
I’m not mad, it’s just... (sighs) Everything you could’ve done wrong tonight, you did wrong. It’s driving me insane to realize that, even after all this time, you apparently haven’t learned a thing. Your father is going to station his men right next to your bed for the rest of your life if you keep this up.
*pause*
An apology doesn’t have any weight when nothing changes afterward, princess.
*pause*
It doesn’t matter why you did it. I don’t care about the reason, and I’m sure your father doesn’t, either. But I suppose it’s not my place to lecture you. So go ahead and try to convince him. Let’s see how well that works out.
*pause*
(huffs) It’s not like you have much of a choice. He’ll have a lot of questions when you show up to breakfast with a hangover and a bad attitude.
*pause*
(suspicious) “Unless” what?
*pause*
(realizing) Oh no. Absolutely not. Forget it. I’m not letting you drag me any further into this mess than you already have. I’ve covered for you plenty of times.
*pause*
I can’t just not bring you home. He’ll notice. And then what am I supposed to say? That I thought you were better off staying at my place? I might as well sign my own death warrant.
*pause*
You’ve got some nerve thinking I’ll help you after all the trouble you’ve already caused.
Maybe a confrontation with your father is exactly what you need. If you always get away with your misbehavior, you’ll never learn from your mistakes.
*pause*
Oh, really? So you promise you’ll never sneak out again if I get you out of this one?
*pause*
That hesitation says it all.
*pause*
Whether I understand your need for freedom or not, it doesn’t change the rules. And I’m supposed to make sure you follow them. I can’t defy your father and do whatever I want just because I don’t agree with everything he says.
*pause*
(taken aback) A puppet? Is that what you think of me?
*pause*
(resigned) You know I hate this just as much as you do. But it’s all we’ve got. So call me a puppet all you want. I’m just doing what I have to do to keep you safe.
*silence*
It’s for the best. Trust me.
*silence*
Come on… Don’t pout, princess… You know I hate seeing you sad.
*silence*
Are you giving me the silent treatment now?
*silence*
(sighs) You’re gonna be the death of me…
*silence*
(defeated) Alright… Fine. You win… I won’t bring you home.
*pause*
Hold on! Don’t get too excited.
I’m not taking you home, and I’ll come up with an explanation for the boss. <But>... in return, you are going to behave. Which means you’ll do as I say, and you won’t complain about it. Understood?
*pause*
All of it?
*pause*
Good. Then put your damn seat belt on so we can get out of here.
[The Speaker starts the car and drives off]
*pause*
We’re going to my place. It’s close by and I know the neighbourhood. It’s the safest option.
And now stop talking and try to get some sleep. I’ll wake you up when we get there…
[Timeskip. The Speaker parks the car and turns off the engine]
All right. Here we are.
*silence*
Come on, sleepyhead. Wake up.
*silence*
Hey, I mean it. You gotta wake up, I’m not carrying you.
*silence*
(mutters) Unbelievable.
[The Speaker gets out of the car, walks around to the passenger’s side, and opens the door]
This is a one-time thing. Don’t get used to it.
[He picks up the Listener with a soft grunt and kicks the car door shut. Then he walks towards the building, the movement waking the Listener]
*pause*
Ah, you’re back. I thought you were out cold.
*pause*
Yeah, this is where I live. I know it’s not much, but since I’m busy running after you all day, I don’t spend much time here anyway.
*pause*
(scoffs, sarcastically) I’m sorry I can’t live up to your standards, Your Highness. Please forgive me.
*pause*
You’re such a brat.
*pause*
My brat? (sighs) You need to stop saying things like that.
*pause*
You know exactly why.
I need to put you down.
*pause*
How else am I supposed to open the door, huh? You’re awake, which means you can stand. So do it.
*pause*
Nuh-uh. What did I say about complaining?
*pause*
Your bed is only a minute away. You’ll manage.
[The Speaker puts the Listener back on her feet and takes out his keys]
*pause*
I know you’re tired. [He unlocks the door]
*pause*
Yes, you can have something to drink. [They walk inside]
*pause*
I don’t have any ice cream. And that doesn’t count as a drink. [The door falls shut behind them]
This way.
*pause*
Don’t worry, the elevator was repaired last Thursday. You won’t have to climb six flights of stairs.
[The Speaker presses the button and the elevator doors slide open]
Look at that. It must’ve been waiting for us. After you.
[They both step inside and the doors close. The elevator slowly ascends]
*pause*
What is it?
*pause*
I know. You just said that ten seconds ago.
*pause*
(sighs) … Fine. Yes. Lean against me if it helps.
[The Listener wraps her arms around the Speaker and rests her head against his chest]
I said <lean> against me, not hug me like I’m a teddy bear.
*pause*
(reluctant) I… didn’t say I minded.
*pause*
Just… hush. We’re almost there.
*pause*
Really? You have to tell me something? Go on, then.
*pause*
(shocked) What?! You-... I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that. You’re lucky you’re drunk and clearly don’t know what you’re saying.
*pause*
I don’t care about “drunk words are sober thoughts.” I’m your bodyguard. You shouldn’t be thinking about… kissing me.
*pause*
It’s wrong. Very wrong. Now take a step back before you do something reckless that’ll get us both into trouble.
*pause*
I’m not answering that question.
*pause*
Because it doesn’t matter what I want.
*pause*
I said no.
[At that moment, the elevator stops with a ding, and the doors slide open]
Oh, thank god. Come with me, my apartment is down the hall.
[The Speaker leads her down the hallway. He turns the key in the lock and opens the door]
Get in. Make yourself at home… or maybe don’t. I fear you’d take it too seriously.
The bathroom’s on the right, and the bedroom’s on the left. I’ll get you a glass of water.
*pause*
What now? I’m not going to keep arguing with you about-
*pause*
You… Your dress?
(deep sigh) Fine. I’ll help you with your dress. But that’s it. You’re going straight to bed afterward.
Turn around.
[The Listener turns around and the Speaker steps closer]
(murmurs) You’re so much trouble, you know that? I’ve been doing this job for years, but I’ve never met anyone like you. [He unzips the dress]
*pause*
(huffs) What makes you think you’re my favorite?
[The Listener turns around to face the Speaker]
You really need to stop looking at me like that.
*pause*
Because you’ve always been my weakness, princess. And I don’t know how much more I can take.
*pause*
No… I know you want me to say it, and I wish I could. But I’m not having this conversation with you while you’re intoxicated and exhausted. It wouldn’t be right. So please…
*pause*
(resigned) If I promise we’ll talk tomorrow, will you go to bed?
*pause*
Then yes. I promise. But for now… you need plenty of sleep.
*pause*
All right. Go. I’ll bring you some water.
[The Listener finally turns and walks into the bedroom]
[Timeskip. The Speaker walks into the room with a glass of water]
Hey, here’s your-...
*silence*
Are you asleep?
*silence*
(sighs) I guess I should be relieved.
[He sits on the edge of the bed and sets the glass down on the nightstand]
(murmurs) What am I gonna do with you…
There’s so much I wish I could tell you. Things that would get me shot before I could even beg for mercy if your father ever found out.
If it weren’t for him… If it weren’t for the life you were born into… I wouldn’t waste another second watching you from afar. I’d kiss you and hold your hand… do all the things I’ve always wanted to do.
But I don’t know how we could ever be more than what we are. I don’t have a solution… Or maybe I’m just scared. Maybe you’re right and I really am just your father’s puppet after all, too scared to make a decision he wouldn’t approve of.
But I’d rather be a puppet who stands by your side as your protector, than risk losing you forever because I wanted too much of you. Of the woman who knows how to drive me crazy in a million different ways.
You gave me a heart attack tonight, you know that? You always do whenever you disappear and I don’t know where you are…
That doesn’t mean I don’t understand why you do it. I know you feel trapped and alone at home. And I hate being the one who drags you back there every single time. I hate the way you look at me when I show up at another party, because you know I’m only there to take you home.
For once, I wish I could just be some other guy who gets to talk to you like everyone else does. I’d love to pretend we’re just two people enjoying each other’s company. But at the same time, I wouldn’t trust anyone else with the job of protecting you. Because I know no one could ever care about your safety as much as I do.
I can only hope that one day, you will find someone who’s allowed to love you the way I wish I could. And I’ll be there to protect you and keep you out of trouble for as long as my heart beats…
If you’ll have me.
[Silence. The Speaker lets out a soft sigh]
…I should go. I’ll leave the water here in case you need it.
Goodnight, princess… [He kisses the Listener on the forehead]
[The End]
