It's not a rat but it's a rodent, it's a nutria.
They're more related to capybaras and guinea pig than rats and they live in my area.
Btw, this one is albino.

u/Electrical-Review180 8d ago
My aunt used to raise them as livestock. In the southern Americans they eat guenia pigs. Guess it's pretty similar. Sadly l have eaten neither

u/Trademarkd 8d ago
can you tell me if they die in like 3 years like normal rats? And do they have the intelligence of rats?
The most tragic thing about having rats as pets is their lifespan.
9
u/Impressive-Oil-3067 7d ago
I've seen a few people on Instagram that have them as pets and they seem to respond to some basic commands.
They live for 6-10 years.
8
u/Trademarkd 7d ago
regular rats can be taught like all sorts of circus tricks, they can be liter box trained, you can teach them to take a bath and stuff its crazy.

Only Peruvians eat guinea pigs but yes, they are related, though these ones are aquatic.
I don't know if these are edible, I know beavers in Tierra del Fuego aren't In Argentina we dont eat either (at least that I know of) though viscachas are eaten in the northwest of the country.
22
u/Alternative-Crew-880 7d ago
They eat guinea pigs in Ecuador, Bolivia, and Columbia also. I know someone who went to Ecuador and ate some.

Good to know, I guess Peru is the most famous about it, because it's a running joke in latinoamerican social media that Peruvians eat them.
7
u/Alternative-Crew-880 7d ago
I'm guessing it's a social class thing. My friend was over there to help out building a well for a poor village out in the sticks. They basically lived in shacks with dirt floors while she was out there.

I ate that at a fancy restaurant in Peru in Cuzco and I ate it in a Quechua speaking mountain village in Ecuador.

I had to look up Viscachas, they are so cute.
Afaik beavers aren't tasty but they are a protected species in Europe anyways. Since they seem to be invasive at yours, maybe you should try it lol
Do you know why only guinea pigs are only being eaten in Peru? Are there only native to there?
3
u/MissingLink101 7d ago
Just had to look them up too. Why do they all look either tired or sad?
3
u/Electrical-Review180 7d ago
They kinda do huh
3
u/MissingLink101 7d ago
They all look like they've lived a hard life

u/Impressive-Oil-3067 7d ago

We eat them here in France, it's an invasive specy. Pathé, rillettes or daube, those are the common dish we made with it

Are you saying the nutria is nutritious??
Ok, I'll see myself out of here.
3
u/Careful-Wash 8d ago
I mean there is an episode of uncharted where Gordon Ramsay eats nutria. He didn’t seem to hate it.

u/No-Mess-1169 8d ago
thanks for clearing because I have seen rats and I was thinking what type of rat this is

Albino, but no red eyes? 👀 how come? 🔴🔴
16
3
u/QuokkaOfDeath 7d ago
It could have Leucism. It's a similar lack/failure of pigment cells but without the red/pink eyes. I didn't know what a nutria was exactly and haven't checked still

fr, since when have rats webbed feet
159
u/DragonTheOnes-spirit 8d ago
The pokemon raticate has webbed feet for some reason. And since I've never went outside that's what a true rat is
83
u/RugerBooger69 8d ago
It can also learn ice beam, thunderbolt, hyper beam, and shadow ball.
It's a giant rat that can shoot laser beams of pure coldness, electricity, pure energy, and death
You can't even escape from it in the water thanks to its webbed feet. It will eraticate you.

I'm pretty sure Japan has invasive nutria, so it wouldn't surprise me that the creator of Pokemon was somewhat inspired by them.

Yep. We have those in France as an invasive species. Currently there's a white one hanging around the wetlands next to my town.

u/EasyFooted 8d ago
We have them in Louisiana (the nutria, not the French. No wait, actually....)

Lol we have them here in Oregon too however many thousands of miles away. Also invasive here, the local government encourages people to shoot them on sight.

u/pietoast 8d ago
If you have them but they're many thousands of miles away, I don't think you actually have them

We call them nutrias too, although coipo is the name we've been using more recently.

It's not a rat, it's definitely a rodent, but it's a coypu. Albino (or rather, just leucystic)

A capybarat.

Rats and capybaras are just two different species of rodent, this is a third so it makes sense they all look similar

Why does it have webbed feet? Is it a relative of capybaras?

I think, same general idea - big, swimming South American rodent.

Albino nutria?

Close. Its actually leucistic. Not albino. But still a nutria or coypa (they're the same thing, just different names).

HE'S CUTE. I LOVE HIM. is this unhealthy for the rat...? either way, he's handsome and I wish him well.

u/LCSdrd 8d ago
That is not a rat. Its like pointing at a panther and saying its a huge domestic cat. That's a normal sized nutria with albinism. Very cute

I looked this up. Yeah I think you're right! A handsome and adorable fellow to be sure.

My friend and I would play a DnD-esque situation and whenever I'd go to the cellar to clear out rats he would say "the rat lunged for you and bit your jugular"
I would get so mad that a tiny rat would take me out in one swipe, but you know what? Now I see his vision 😭🙏🏼
