Lord Vitthal in Pandharpur, Maharashtra
a Regional diety considered to be Avatar of lord Vishnu
every year millions of devotees go on a pilgrimage to his temple in Pandharpur in a large procession known as Plaki in Maharashtra - https://youtube.com/shorts/Yo1Qz242MfU?si=LLfT6QpVrG_qxCXg

Correction, the pilgrimage is known as Varee. And the carriage in which the idol is carried is called a Palkhi.

Yup! Many people consider Vitthala (also called Vithoba) to be a regional form of Buddha or local folk hero later appropriated into Brahminical Hinduism.

Vitthal of Pandharpur 🙏 It's a holy place in Maharashtra, and one of the largest on foot pilgrimages that devotees do (it's called Varee).

Thank you!
This is one of the large states in India that I haven’t visited yet. As for pilgrimages, the only one I’ve taken part in (in a sense) was the ascent to the Neelkanth Mahadev temple near Rishikesh during Maha Shivaratri. This year, I saw a great many pilgrims in the Hassan district of Karnataka, and I was incredibly impressed.

Do come to Maharashtra, the state is beautiful and you'll find some of the best food :)

Reddit atheists are the reason people hate atheists and also why people do a 180 towards mega churches and stuff.
Edit: I said 360 instead of 180.

I guess people should start saying 180 360 lands you in the same direction

It's always kinda sad seeing a young kid already deep in religious bs

"How dare this child take part in a central component of their people's culture that has been passed down for centuries. No, they must be little more than blank slates that take up nothing until they're old to enough think like me, as is only right."

I get that but I grew up Hindu and as a kid idols are sort of like dolls in a way? Its strange to explain

Yeah, I grew up Hindu as well but converted to Christianity in college, and I feel like if I never converted, I might have an idol in my home similarly to secular Jews adorning their doorways with Mezzuzahs.

Not really, as a child in Hinduism we treat idols like dolls(?) Like my younger brother would literally take a very small idol and keep it in his mouth and then we had to make adjustments to avoid that lol, and once he just picked up another idol and took the idol to his bed at night, imagine my mother's surprise 😭

yeah so what is your point? That's like saying they shouldn't serve food/feed the idols prior to eating because they technically created food.

tru, but i think people are interested in his ignorance and cuteness not that they support everything.

Hindu gods are just the religious version of atheist/secular superhero characters like Superman, Spiderman, Hulk, etc.
This Pixar short film is instructive: Sanjay’s Super Team

Sometimes you wonder why some countries are so backward and then you come across pictures like these. Why is a kid holding umbrella to a stone? Why is no one telling him that god is not real? That kid will grow up thinking he is not enough and a stupid rock will save him from tough situations.

Its called having a culture, sure a country who’s culture is mcdonalds and genocide wouldn’t understand that

No the kid will grow into an adult and develop critical thinking skills. Kids at that age look at idols like dolls(?) and try to protect them.

u/Dingi_89 12h ago
Trying to protect dolls is fine I get that. Thinking that doll will protect them in life is the problem

I've been to India and it's even worse than you can imagine. The sheer ignorance, superstition is completely out of this world. It's as if a segment of the population refuses to join this century. Weirdest aspect is that even their decision on when to launch their probe to the moon was made by astrologers!

Eh, there’s emotion, color, depth, a story, and religious overtones. It’s thematically more Renaissance that 99.9% of the animal stuff that gets posted.
