Enough

This might be unpopular, but I have been thinking about it a lot.

The University is struggling with finances, students are being asked to pay an extra 400 dollars each in a “student athletic fee” on top of tuition and other fees, fans pay higher and higher ticket, parking, and concession prices, and all the while we are paying the football staff over 12 million a year to not deliver.

The compensation model for coaches NEEDS to be revisited.

An incentive based model should be instituted across the board in the ncaa. You get paid base the same as the professors at the university, with incentives for win totals, player awards, rivalry wins, and the BIG money only comes with college football playoff berths, and wins in the playoff.

Now now, I know the million reasons why this won’t work. Everyone would have to play ball (they won’t), the field would need to be balanced for getting to the playoff (it won’t, thanks Notre Dame), but it’s not like the current model is getting us the results we want.

This is a pipe dream and a rant, but it’s exhausting seeing regular folks pay so much for these “coaches” to not deliver on their end. They are paid handsomely, but aren’t getting it done. Period.

All very valid points. Wage laws will prohibit how much control we have over coaches’ salaries, but the athletic fee students are forced to pay should be illegal. It has nothing to do with getting their degree.

Wonder if an interested attorney could somehow put together a class action lawsuit against the extra fee. I know dick-all about what's legal/illegal in cases like that. I'm just thinking out loud.

Regardless, I agree that the financial aspect of college athletics is completely out of whack in its current state. I really don't see how it can sustain this for the foreseeable future.

Agreed. It is advertised as “supporting student athletes” and you get to enter into ticket lotteries in exchange. Most students are there to get a degree and don’t care for sports. Most won’t ever attempt to go to a game.

Furthermore, being a tuition paying student at the university at baseline should get you access to university sporting events

I doubt they would get it overturned. I'm guessing the university wouldn't be pushing it if it was just going to get overturned in court.

It's not just UofL. A lot of major universities are having to find creative ways to raise money to keep up in the current environment. I know people who have gone to a variety of universities, and almost all of them charge some sort of "athletics" fee.

UofL would probably also say they can get around it by saying it allows the students to get in free to most sporting events and get highly discounted tickets for football and men's basketball. They would probably argue that, without the student fee, they would have to raise student ticket pricing for football and men's basketball almost up to regular pricing.
