What if Everything went perfect for India.

In this alternate timeline, Jinnah dies early in the 1940s, causing the Muslim League to lose its influence among Muslims. The ideas of Gandhi and the Khudai Khidmatgars become popular among both Muslims and Hindus, leading to fewer conflicts and greater harmony between the two communities. India gains independence in 1947 without the events of Direct Action Day or Partition, resulting in more peace and joy on August 14, 1947. India still manages to consolidate princely states, including Kalat and Kashmir, without any foreign interference.

By the 1950s, India is in a much better position without communal riots, the bloody partition, and wars with Pakistan. Nehru becomes the prime minister and immediately bans the All India Muslim League, RSS, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Hindu Mahasabha forever. India remains non-aligned, which proves to be the best strategy at the time. When China invades India, this time, India uses aircraft against the Chinese military, leading to a Chinese defeat and their retreat from Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian government successfully invests in government companies, and Nehru also begins developing the industrial sector alongside agriculture.

After Nehru's death, Lal Bahadur Shastri becomes the leader. Without the 1965 war, he never goes to Tashkent and never gets poisoned. Homi Bhabha also never travels to France, meaning he does not die in a plane crash. Under Shastri, the Indian economy begins to open up to the world, and India develops a nuclear arsenal in the late 1960s. However, due to his age and health, Shastri dies in the early 1970s, and Indira Gandhi succeeds him. There is no Emergency, but she remains autocratic and nationalizes some industries developed under Shastri's leadership.

Indira Gandhi still develops RAW, but without Pakistan as an adversary, she uses it against China. There is no Sikh insurgency, and without Partition, there is no Operation Bluestar or Delhi riots, and the Khalistani sentiment does not arise. Indira Gandhi steps down due to old age, and Rajiv Gandhi succeeds her. With the fall of the Soviet Union, he begins liberalizing the economy as in our timeline, but he never intervenes in Sri Lanka. SAARC is in a much better position without Indo-Pakistani conflicts, leading to greater regional integration. Rajiv Gandhi wins the 1990 elections, and LPG reforms are implemented. India's plans for access to Central Asian gas are successful, resulting in a stronger economy.

Without the wars with Pakistan and the insurgency in Kashmir, India becomes economically stronger. Without the RSS and Muslim League, an alternate opposition party to Congress emerges, most likely named the People's Party of India.

Effect on world

There would be absence of the Kashmir issue and Indo-Pakistani wars would lead to no Bengali genocide and no hundreds of terror attacks in the 1990s and 2000s. With a united India, the Soviet Union could potentially win the Soviet-Afghan War, as the US would lack a route through Pakistan to fund the Mujahideen. A Soviet victory in Afghanistan would prevent the Afghan Civil War, the rise of the Mujahideen, and subsequently, the 9/11 attacks. This means there would be no Afghan Arabs, no US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, no ISIS, no Kurdish genocide, and no Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

1992: A Maoist-led communist revolution erupts, triggering a decade-long civil war against the monarchy.

1992–2005: The revolutionary forces gradually defeated the royal army and overthrew the monarchy.

What if What if the Marathas never became an organised military force but the decline of the Mughals still happened? What other less discussed historical players of the time would have taken over the Deccan?

So in this scenario I'm imagining either Chatrapati Shivaji never rising to power or dying before achieving his feats in our timeline. The obvious contenders to fill that political vaccum during the fall of the Mughals are I think are the Deccan sultanates and maybe the Nizam or Mysore but what other smaller players had a real chance at building something close to the scale of the Maratha Empire in the Deccan?

Indian Politics but BJP is banned in 1995.

Background- BJP, RSS,VHP banned by Supreme Court due to involvement in Babri Masjid fiasco and riots. L.K Advani jailed but Vajpayee acquitted due to less involvement in the riots. Vajpayee merges leftover BJP to a declining Janata Dal and comes up with "United Janata Dal".

1996 Elections- Rajiv Gandhi wins big very easily as the votes are fragmented and there aren't many strong national figures against him. Vajpayee's UJD wins 88 seats, but compared to BJP's 120 from 1991, and JD's 119 in 1989, it's a flop launch.

2001- Vajpayee's United Janata Dal and vajpayee himself has gone irrelevant as factionalism within the party has killed it. RJD, JD(U), BJD, Samajwadi Party are born. Congress under Rajiv comes back with a lower majority(256) and outside support. Samajwadi Party establishes itself in UP, while RJD and JD(U) fight in Bihar. Sharad Pawar separates from Congress and forms NCP in Maharashtra.

2005- Rajiv Gandhi assassinated in alleged Pakistan plan. Border skirmishes and conflict erupts. A huge sympathy wave(similar to Indira in 1984) is formed in the country. Rahul's colleague and Maharashtra CM, Vilasrao Deshmukh takes over the party and is declared PM. Deshmukh seeing the massive sympathy wave, decides to call elections 8 months early and the party wins its second largest number, at 368 and touches 400 with coalition.

2010- Anti-Corruption and Lokpal bill protests erupt nationwide, led by many social figures. The Swaraj India party is formed in 2006, forms govt under Kejriwal in Delhi in 2007, Punjab 2008 and Gujarat 2008. Yogendra Yadav is the most prominent face of the movement/party. In 2010 elections, Congress sees big decline but forms government while Swaraj India starts it's innings at 91 seats.

2015- A very normal election, INC wins 181 and forms coalition government while Swaraj rises from 91 to 116 seats. Kumar Vishwas was chosen as the Swaraj India's PM face as the party believed strongly in different faces and moving away from giving one politician too much importance.

2020- Kejriwal wins the Swaraj India PM nomination race and helps party win it's first ever Lok Sabha victory with 240 seats, leading a strong coalition government with DMK,BJD and JD(U).Gehlot let INC sees its worst result ever, sliding down to 103 seats.

2025- Very divided opinion polls. Kejriwal decides not to continue as PM due to party rules. Congress puts forwards Jagan Mohan Reddy(son of former Andhra CM and a CM himself) as the party's PM nominee. Swaraj India fears losing seats in South India because of this move and decided to put forward the name of it's alliance member DMK's chief M.K Stalin as their PM Nominee. Final Result- Congress-149, Swaraj-181, Swaraj forms government with CPI(M) Support.

This was my most effort taking scenario yet, taking 5 hours+

What would India look like today if the Mughals had NEVER ruled the subcontinent

Post image
59 Upvotes

Here's a historical “what if” I've been thinking about:

Imagine Babur never defeated Ibrahim Lodi in 1526. The Mughal Empire never exists.

Fast-forward 500 years to 2026.

Would we have a completely different India?

Would a Rajput, Maratha, Vijayanagara, or another Indian power eventually unify most of the subcontinent?

Would Hindi/Urdu develop differently—or would another language become dominant across North India?

Would Delhi, Agra, Lahore and other major cities look completely different?

Would Mughal architecture, food, clothing, art and music still emerge through other cultural interactions?

Would the British find India more difficult to conquer because there was no massive centralized empire, or would political fragmentation make colonization easier?

Would today's India, Pakistan and Bangladesh even exist as separate countries?

And perhaps the biggest question: would modern Indian culture actually be recognizably different, or would many of these developments have happened anyway?

A new milenium for Indian Politics.

Background-

By the year 1992, Tamil Nadu had been ruled by Congress since the last 39 years, the party dealt with anti-incumbency in the worst way possible- not leaving any room for opposition to survive in the first place. But the frustration over state government had reached an all time high. The CEC of India T.N Seshan steps in , after his retirement, he starts the "National People's Conference". The party contests and sweeps the State assembly elections in 1994. By 2002, the party had MLAs in 4 different Southern States and had 43 MPs in the Lok Sabha. In the 2002 General Election, the Congress fails to form government, declining to 210 seats and with no one offering support, to Congress or other alternatives, NPC becomes the mutually agreed upon options of Janata Dal, CPI(M),TDP and BJP. NPC's Pinarayi Vijayan becomes the PM. The party was very politically active, aware and smart, over the 5 years as they managed a thread coalition, they also started to increase their footprint over the entire country from just Southern States. It did however cost them a few allies, such as Janata Dal, who didn't pull back support, but informed NPC that they won't be alligning with them after 2007 elections. The party also got divided into 2 in it's home state of Tamil Nadu as the MLAs and workers who believed that the party was separating from it's Dravidian roots formed AIADMK, which later alligned with Congress.

2007 Elections- Opinion Polls had suggested Congress government with approx 230-250 seats. and NPC's number to be remaining mostly regional with about 35-49 seats. The results however surprised everyone. INC won 234 seats(as expected), but the NPC had gained significant inroads in the Northern India belt, winning 103 overall seats. The INC had formed government with it's allies comfortably, but now it had a very strong and important opposition in front of them. Overtime, NPC would continue to increase it's footprint and eventually form government again after 10 years, in 2017 Lok Sabha.

Hope you guys liked the scenario and the work.

A continuation of this timeline

The part where Tharoor becomes PM has inspiration taken from This Post [altough the timeline itself is FAR different]

The timeline sees a far more technocratic political landscape, with a lot of the OTL BJP leaders who died in this timeline survived for longer, alongside Congress leader Sheila Dixit.

What if What if instead of Delhi Sultanate India was ruled by Mongols?

As you all know the Mongol Empire was the largest continuous land empire in the world till now and later got divided into 4 parts in 1294 namely : Golden Horde, Chagatai Khanate, Ilkhanate & Yuan Empire.

Golden Horde was ruled by Genghis Khan's 1st son Jochi Khan's children, Chagatai Khanate was ruled by Genghis Khan's 2nd son Chagatai Khan's children, Ilkhanate & Yuan Empire was ruled by Genghis Khan's 4th son Tolui khan's 3rd son Hulegu Khan and 2nd son Kublai Khan.

It is also an interesting fact that all these 4 succeeding empires adopted the culture, religion and languages of the region where they ruled. Like Golden Horde & Chagatai Khanate adopted Sunni Islam and their language, Ilkhanate adopted Persian culture, Shia Islam and language and Yuan Empire adopted Tibetan Buddhism as religion, chinese cultures including names as well.

So what if the Mongols also ruled India? Also it should be direct Mongols like I said 'instead' of Delhi Sultanate and during the same time when 4 successive Mongol states of Mongol Empire existed, at that time if Mongols also ruled the Indian subcontinent what would be it like, what effects and consequences it would bring.

Historical Figures Our post colonial history

I have been reading some history books on partition of India. In 1946/47, the British civil servant Cyril Radcliffe drew the map of India including how to partition the country, most of us know the bloody history.

What I did not find in any books is why Nepal was left out to be an independent country. In every respect (religion, culture, etc.) they are very similar to us. Both were British colonies. Can anyone enlighten me?

What if India was never colonized by Britishers

Isn't it right to say that if India was never colonised by Britishers then INDIAN SUBCONTINENT must be divided into different regional kingdoms which will eventually led to formation of different nations because after the fall of Mughals India was divided into different regional kingdoms

Would anyone here be interested in discussing alternative history. Say would be India/Bharat like if:

  1. There was no British Rule

  2. There was no Mughal Rule

  3. Prithviraj Chauhan had not let Mohammad of Ghor escape in 1191 to comeback and defeat him in 1192
