Discussion What alt rock bands do you wish would get back together?
I keep diving into music from between 10 and 20 years ago. Some older bands seems to be still around but we lost some real classics in-between.
- Talk Talk (one older band I miss)
- The Open
- And They Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
- Idiot Pilot
- Nine Black Alps
- School Of Seven Bells
- Friendly Fires
- The Sundays
You must have some too. I want to find some undiscovered classics...

Just because I am an old dude I will mention that I used to see Treat Her Right (Sandman's earlier band) at the tiny bar Plough and Stars and they were awesome.

I was really into Treat Her Right when their first two records came out. I couldn't believe that was Mark in Morphine when I first heard that band. Morphine was like the dark funhouse mirror version of Treat Her Right. Both great, but entirely different vibes.

Interesting. Looks like much of it is alternate recordings or new edits of previously released songs.

R.E.M. are my all-time favorite band and I both want this very badly and don’t want it at all and I can’t decide which one I want more

While I would love to see them one more time (only if Bill were playing), I truly believe it will never happen.

u/therealpopkiller 1d ago
I saw them twice, as much as I’d like to see it happen, I’m okay if it doesn’t

u/AmbassadorSevere3113 1d ago
I was lucky enough to see them 5 times, starting w/ the Green World Tour.

u/therealpopkiller 1d ago
That is lucky! I saw them on the Monster and Accelerate tours. Only had one other chance to see them, at a rock the vote thing in 04 but I was in college and poor at the time

The Green show was my favorite because it was my 1st time and it was utterly amazing. It was almost exactly what you see if you watch the "tourfilm" video. Accelerate was a great show as well because it had been a long time since I had seen them live.

If you are close to one of the cities they are touring, go see a Michael Shannon & Jason Narducy R.E.M. Tribute Show. I saw them do Fables and it was awesome! They didn't come around for Life's Rich Pageant and aren't scheduled close to me for Document (current tour and my favorite album!) and I am VERY BUMMED!

Already got my tickets for the LA show!

Another act I have seen is the R.E.M. cover band Dead Letter Office. They do a great job but it is a different vibe of show than Shannon/Narducy. It is still worth the price of admission.

I’ll have to look for them if they’re ever out this way. I’ve always been kinda eh on tribute bands though

Unlike a lot of others, I think this will happen one day, and it'll be because Bill Berry says he wants to play again. It will be a short run of shows, and it will be amazing.

Andy Rourke being dead is less of a barrier to a Smiths reunion than how insufferable Morrisey has become.

Catherine Wheel, Elastica & Curve are all personal favorites of mine. We must have similar taste in music.

And They Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead still play shows occasionally in Austin.
Mine would be Fugazi and Elastica.

Mike Doughty has released some excellent solo albums.

Definitely. He's one of those incredibly rare musicians where I find pretty much every song of his to be good.

I saw a band called the Fairlanes open for Jonathan Richman in the early 00’s in San Francisco. They had an Asian singer and they were fantastic live. Is that who you’re talking about? I always expected to hear big things from them….

Before Christine McVie passed, I hoped for Fleetwood Mac. But The Sundays, The Smiths, and Talk Talk would be cool too.

Shudder to think, Sunny Day Real Estate both active again. I'd love to see Burning Airlines or Chavez

I just saw Trail of Dead a few years ago. I’m pretty sure they’re on tour now.

Some sort of Kyuss reunion would be nice, along with some new material. Can't see it happening before hell freezes over, though.

Nice call for Nine Black Alps. Was giving them a spin just last week.
For me maybe The Bravery or Ambulance Ltd?

my answer would have been Don Caballero, but just last week they announced a reunion

Talk Talk would have been amazing, but since losing Mark Hollis, it's an impossibility. Incredible body of work left behind.

I was gonna say none because there is loads of good music happening all the time and we have had all this amazing music already, then read SVIIB. So yeah I'd maybe buckle for them but they'd probably still be with us if Ben hadn't died.
