Science & Tech Why is an acre exactly 43,560 square feet instead of a clean number like 40,000 or 50,000? What's special about 43,560?
House hunting got me looking at lot sizes, and I realized an acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. That seems like an oddly specific number when 40,000 or 50,000 would be much easier to remember. Where did this figure come from? Why did this exact figure become the standard unit across the whole country?
