My local police (southern California) have a social media boner for confiscating e-bikes, shaming anyone riding one, and threatening all sorts of consequences for children. Our DA held a "buyback" event for e-bikes two weeks ago to help get them off the street. It's kinda insane.

I’m not familiar with the e-bikes issue. But why some police across the U.S. just seizes them for?

It's complicated. Basically parents buy these various types of e-bikes for their children, and some kids have been little terrors using them - speeding, riding in the street in groups, or using them in sidewalks where they can hurt others. Some of the e-bikes are legal for kids to use, some are basically motorcycles that require a license. Some people have been hurt (and killed) by kids riding these bikes and getting into accidents.

Police and local DAs have mixed all the issues together and decided that e-bikes are dangerous for everyone, across the board. So my jurisdiction is doing a "buyback", many police agencies are bragging about stopping children and arresting them (and their parents) for various crimes, and in general just trying to appease the old, white, voting population who yells a lot about kids.

Just about always is. Cops need something to focus on in order to make more criminals and to keep the people supporting them for stupid stuff.
