This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.
USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Earlier this week, police issued an urgent appeal asking for help in tracking down a woman last seen cycling near the RAI on October 4. She was found dead in the Amstel earlier today. Police suspect foul play, and are still asking for witnesses to come forward.

My wife is ill so I have an extra ticket, no charge for someone who wants to hear some funky Balkan brass tonight (membership included).
First person to DM me with first and last name and email address (I need those to transfer the ticket on the Melkweg site) gets them! Doors open 19:30, show starts 20:30.
No charge, but feel free to buy a beer for the purple haired guy standing towards the back.

During my European road trip in August, I spent some time exploring Amsterdam with my camera.
What fascinated me most was how the canals shape the character of the city. The historic buildings, bridges, boats, and tree-lined streets create beautiful compositions almost everywhere you look.
I particularly enjoyed capturing the symmetry of the canals and how the changing light transformed the atmosphere throughout the day.
Here are three of my favorite photographs from the visit.
Camera: Fujifilm GFX 50S II
Lens: Fujinon GF 32–64mm f/4 R LM WR
Edited in: Adobe Lightroom
For those who know Amsterdam well, which lesser-known canals or neighborhoods would you recommend exploring with a camera?

Hi all! I need to go from Buitenveldert to Kinkerstraat for an event tomorrow early afternoon, and I am struggling to understand how to best get there in bike due to the marathon.
I thought I could take the cycling path from Amsterdamse bos to Schinkelhaven, cross through Nieuw West and move into Oud West from there, but it looks like that road will be closed (see map in the URL).
Alternatively I go through Rivierenbuurt, but I am not sure how to navigate the crossings there. It seems I need to cross at President Kennedylaan and then Amstelhotel again. But I am not certain that is reallu the case.
Anyone else see any option? I don’t mind a big detour as long as I get there!

As the title says, a cyclist got hit by a car today at a roundabout on Amstelveenseweg, my wife was passing by and was very worried about the guy that was injured. Someone already called 112, so there wasn't much she could do to help, but I wonder if anyone knows what happened with the victim, what's his condition... Apparently the driver didn't let the cyclist go through the roundabout and hit him, sending him flying. First of all - we hope he's ok , second - please be careful, whether you bike or drive.

Hey all. I have been looking to get more clothing but am on a budget. Some of the recommended shops I've been to in De Pijp, but that's €20 per shirt still. Anyone know better spots, maybe lesser known and less curated?
Additionally, I want more jewelry (men's rings specifically) - any recommendations? Online works too. Thanks!

Hello everyone! I’m currently trying to establish myself as a full time dominatrix and I might be permanently moving to Amsterdam the next year.
The country where I’m from and where I still live (Hungary) is not exactly an ideal place for providers in my industry. I’d like to hear some insight, opinions and experience from the local BDSM providers and those who moved there for the purpouse of working, even temporarily. I’d greatly appreciate any tips about the work, sites where I can advertise myself, clients and their interests, etc.
Please, either drop a comment or a DM if you have anything to say!
Have a nice day everyone!

Private lease or buy a used Yaris Hybrid in the Netherlands?
I’m trying to decide between leasing a Kia Picanto automatic or buying a used Toyota Yaris Hybrid.
The Picanto lease would be around €349 per month for 24 months and 12,000 km per year. Insurance, road tax, maintenance, repairs and APK are included. I would only pay separately for fuel.
A decent used Yaris Hybrid would cost around €13,000. I would then cover insurance, road tax, servicing, APK and any repairs, and would need to sell it after approximately two years. I also have to consider that the €13,000 could remain invested and potentially earn around 5% annually if I lease instead.
My driving would be mostly around Amsterdam, with occasional motorway trips. I value convenience and predictable costs, but I also don’t want to overpay just to avoid the work involved in ownership and resale.
For people who have faced a similar decision in the Netherlands, which option worked out better financially? Are there any costs, risks or lease conditions I may be overlooking?

Since July 2024, homes up to 186 WWS points have a legally capped rent (€1,228/month in 2026), and Amsterdam enforces it with fines. A plain 40 m² flat should land well under 186 points, so it should be capped.
But when I filter Funda/Pararius for 40 m²+ under €1,600, I get garages and storage boxes.
So where are the capped flats? Never listed? Illegal rents? Furnished loopholes? Has anyone actually reported a landlord, and what happened

Hi everyone!
I’m an international student living in the Netherlands, and I’ve been thinking about going clubbing in Amsterdam on my own for the first time!
The main reason I want to go alone is simply that none of my friends are really interested in clubbing, but I’d still love to experience the nightlife here.
However, I’ve come across a few posts saying that some nightclubs might refuse entry to people who show up alone. Is this actually a thing in Amsterdam? I’d hate to travel all the way there only to be turned away at the door.
Also, as a woman going clubbing alone, are there any particular safety precautions I should keep in mind? I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from other women who’ve gone clubbing solo in Amsterdam!
Thanks so much in advance! :)

Hi everyone!
My mother and I are looking for responsible, loving people who would be willing to adopt these little kittens we rescued in Bulgaria. They're around about 3 months old, and we're hoping to find homes where they can stay together in pairs. They're currently living with us in Sofia, Bulgaria.
TL;DR: We found this kittens in the backyard of our village in and have been taking care of them, but unfortunately, we can't keep them all. We're looking for loving homes, preferably with people willing to adopt them in pairs. We're happy to arrange adoption in the Netherlands, as we've already successfully done this before with the help of a reliable pet transport company, that travels to many western countries. About a month ago, they safely transported two other kittens we had rescued from the street in front of our house to the Netherlands, where a lovely lady adopted them and gave them a loving home.
IMPORTANT: We offer to split the travel costs for the pair that you choose to adopt.
A little about our situation:
Unfortunately, there are so many stray cats in Bulgaria, and finding people willing to adopt them is much harder than you might think. That's one of the main reasons we've decided to look for homes abroad.
We've been doing our best to help as many animals as we can, but it's becoming increasingly difficult to take care of all of them ourselves.
The kittens are around 2 months old now. They're lovely, playful little babies, and we just want them to have a chance to grow up somewhere safe, with people who will genuinely love and care for them.
We would really prefer for them to be adopted in pairs, as they're siblings who have grown up together. They're all currently living together at our place, and we'd love for them to have each other's company in their new homes, too.
A little about our previous adoption experience:
About a month ago, we managed to find a home in the Netherlands for two other kittens we had rescued from the street in front of our house. A lovely lady adopted them, and thankfully everything went really well. We're still in touch with her, and it's been wonderful seeing how they're doing in their new home.
For transportation, we used a reliable pet transport company based in Bulgaria that regularly travels across Europe. They took care of pretty much everything and were really responsible throughout the entire journey.
We even had a WhatsApp group where they kept us updated every few hours about where the kittens were, how they were doing, and how the trip was going. It was really reassuring, especially since we wanted to make sure they were safe throughout the journey.
I'm mentioning this because I know adopting an animal from another country might sound complicated, but we've already been through the process once, and we'd be more than happy to share our experience or help arrange everything with anyone interested. Of course, travel would need to be arranged once the kittens are old enough and meet the necessary requirements.
If anyone is interested in adopting a pair, please feel free to send me a private message. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions, send more pictures or videos, and discuss everything with you.
And if you're not able to adopt, we'd really appreciate it if you could share this post. Maybe someone you know is looking for two little companions. ❤️
We're not a shelter or an organization. It's just me and my mother trying to help some cats that would otherwise be left on the streets. We know we can't save every animal, but we're trying to do what we can.
Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this or help us spread the word. ❤️🐾

My boyfriend asked me to marry him, but I later found a detailed sexual story he wrote in ChatGPT. He claims it was a fantasy, but I’m struggling to believe him.
He described paying €50 for a blowjob from a Latina sex worker, asking to touch her breasts, being invited upstairs to a room with a mirror facing the bed, and receiving oral sex and a handjob.
For those who have actually visited and paid for services there, does this sound like a realistic account of what happens, or are any details suspicious or inaccurate? I’m trying to understand whether he might be describing a real experience rather than a fantasy.
Please share your honest, firsthand experiences.

I’m currently at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, and at around 9:58 AM today (October 15), all the blinds along the windows on both sides of the terminal suddenly closed at the same time.
They’re completely opaque, so you can no longer see the runway, and the terminal became noticeably darker. Everything else seems to be operating normally, including the shops, and I’ve heard repeated announcements in Dutch.
Does anyone who works at Schiphol or is familiar with airport operations know why this might happen? Could it be an automated building system, a special flight, or some kind of operational procedure?

Hey everyone, been lurking for a time but first time posting, and yeah this is a rant.
Of course I’m generalizing and I’m not talking about everyone, but I just gotta ask because I can’t make sense of it.
•It is one thing for runners to fully avoid using walking paths to invade bike lanes.
•Another to do it during rush hour.
•One different not to stick to a side but run in the middle of the lane.
•One extra to wear noise cancelling earphones (or earphones in general but not react at all to someone calling your attention, I can’t tell which one is it).
•And last but not least run in the same direction as the cycling so you don’t see any of the bikes approaching you.
But all of them?
Just why?
Am I missing something here?
Is there an advantage to this combo??
Cause I feel if it was just not all of them combined it could be fairly easy to avoid collisions.
But if you do them all no matter how you’re considered the weakest one in the traffic it’s a recipe for disaster.
Like for instance, why on earth don’t you just do your thing but at least run on the opposite side of the road so you face the cyclists??
Signed a frustrated cyclist that deals daily with this phenomenon during rush hour 😅
