Is this like in dogs where it means this critter has worms?
734
u/Principle_Napkins 6d ago
Not necessarily. Do you have worms every time you scratch your butt? Sometimes it's just itchy.

AKA not cleaning yourself properly

u/dinobirdboy 6d ago
Sometimes it happens because you clean a little too well

like others have said, not always. Our cat pulls this move a few times a week and we went back and forth with the vet for a long time only to conclude, as the vet put it, “he just does that”
(it may be because he has allergies but allergy testing for animals, especially cats, is kinda limited. Also yes, before anyone asks, we discourage him as much as we can)13

One of my family's cats likes his butt rubbed, and if no one does it then he'll just do this instead. I imagine it doesn't feel nearly as nice as some butt pets though lol.

every dog I ever had did this and no dog I ever had got worms. My nieces and nephews have had intestinal worms more often than my dogs, but all my dogs still do this.

I thought that's what it meant too until we got our little maltese. She's on Credelio Quattro, but, when she started trying to do this on my oriental rug, I took her for a test anyway. Worm free. I finally clocked that she was only doing it after grooms. Shaved butt = itchy butt, I guess.

Who knows but it's most definitely where the photographer sadly can not find the focus control.

Was listening to my favorite podcast not long ago and they were talking about the first (discovered) fossil trackway of an animal doing this lol

I was so disappointed that for years, I watched many wild animals documentary, but only learned that elephant's penis can act like an arm from an random incident.

Most animals have a hard time using toilet paper, let alone finding a roll in the wild.

That's what my cats do! I have to chase them around with a carpet scrubber!

If you wanna go down a horrific rabbit hole, look up what happens when we catch fox tapeworm.

My cat does this occasionally. He’s a 9 year old indoor cat who definitely doesn’t have worms but he is long haired so I think it just feels good. I don’t like it much. But he doesn’t care; he’ll make eye contact and just do it right in front of me.

My cat did that on our carpet when she had a piece of hard poop stuck half out of her butt

Or just glands that need to be expressed . Or just a crusty dingleberry. Or just an itchy bum.
