“I’m not tall” then you tell me you’re 6’4 😒

u/retrosenescent Jul 24 '26
They specifically said they are not "freakishly" tall, which is correct - they're barely above average height in some countries.

u/rq60 Jul 24 '26
ummm, no. they are quite tall. assuming they're in the US, there is a good chance they're the only person on the plane that tall.
from opus 5:

I mean I agree with the sentiment, I am Dutch though so I'm only kind of tall in my family

Agreed. I am a bit under 6 foot and always thought I was average or the median. Not below average. This is why the secondhand store I shop at has a broad selection of my size that was donated by many others of average size, while the Big and Tall section always has less items to choose from.

u/ElPiet Jul 25 '26
The highest average height is in the Netherlands with 6feet. Calling 4 inches barely above is a stretch at best. You are in the top 8% of men in the Netherlands and top 1% in the western hemisphere

This is one of the few times I am happy to be a “fun-sized” short person. I have had some flights where I offered to let the tall person next to me put their bag under the seat in front of me because it pained me to watch them try to cram their bag and themselves into that space.

One reason why I don’t fly anymore. At 6’5” and mostly legs, it’s just uncomfortable. If I can’t drive, or be driven, I’m not going.

u/DueGuard9362 Jul 24 '26
Lol I say this every year. At least I can afford to not fly with Ryanair anymore.

Can someone please explain how this post relates to anti consumption? It's a guy on a plane and an advertisement for a canyon destination. I'm so confused
59
u/Bored_Amalgamation Jul 24 '26
It's an ad utilizing the enshittification of modern air travel to sell you on a vacation; while subtlely mocking the traveler.. .
Insane that there's an ad there in the first place.

I can see how the image relates to anticonsumerism from an ad-busters perspective — it’s ridiculous that we pay for a service and then are force-fed ads. This goes for advertising on a plane seat where I purchased a ticket, the ads that play at gas stations while you are paying to fill up, and the adds placed on shopping carts when you are paying to buy food.
The part about being tall and the words calling out the lack of leg room doesn’t seem to fit anticonsumption, with that I agree.

u/Flack_Bag Jul 24 '26
This is an example of situational irony, in which an ad touting the legroom afforded by one thing is displayed on a thing that is impeding OP's legroom.

That's nature's way of saying tall people cost too much to sustain. Not unlike dinosaurs.
4
u/icecoldcold Jul 24 '26
There were numerous comments and “unpopular opinions” on Reddit over the years saying that overweight people who can’t fit into their seat should buy two seat tickets or pay extra for being overweight. But people rarely extend this to tall people whose knees dig into the back of the passenger in front of them or men manspreading their knees into the leg space of the passenger next to them.
1
u/BentoOtaku Jul 25 '26
I think that opinion is possibly because people can intentionally lose weight more easily(generally) than someone who is taller can actively take measures to become shorter.

u/BentoOtaku Jul 25 '26
The height of the average man, globally, is 5'8." Assuming you typoed and meant to type 6'4" and not 6" and some change tall, that means you're 8" (or 2/3rds of a foot) taller than that. You're taller than Michael Jordan and 1" shorter than Lebron James. So you're actually freakishly tall. xD

Last time I was in a plane, I didn’t even fit. I had to put my legs to the side in the path and get kicked by everyone thinking I was some asshole.

u/NyriasNeo Jul 24 '26
That is why I do not fly coach on international flights. 16 hours cramming up is not going to do well for my aged body. Luckily I do not have to go often (basically go back to Asia to see my parents) and every time I just have to grudging pay for being able to lie down for 16 hours :(

It just means the leg room you do have is premium. Not a lot but the quality is there haha

no, this doesn't help reduce the cost of flights, this helps squeeze more people on a plane, and force them to buy seats with extra leg room. I can guarantee you that if there would be a way to add 20 passenger seats to a flight, the price wouldn't drop a dime.
I can't do anything about being 6"2. Every flight is painful.

u/Bluemistake2 Jul 24 '26
When the lady infront of me reclined the seat the hinges pushed into my knees so hard it left an indent lmao i feel you brother
They've been taking leg room away slowly over years but at what point does it get ridiculous? Are they gonna provide us with little stools so we can keep our knees up the whole flight at least? Flight tickets ain't cheap
1
u/icedlemons Jul 24 '26
Isn’t it 6’2” common nomenclature?

At 6'4 op is taller than 99% of thr population
0
u/retrosenescent Jul 24 '26
global population, but most of the globe doesn't fly. 6'4 is much closer to average if you narrow it to the population that flies.
-1
u/mangothefoxxo Jul 24 '26
Since when is flying favoured by tall people what
1
u/retrosenescent Jul 24 '26
Flying is a luxury form of transportation largely utilized by people in wealthier countries, where people are much taller on average. Use your brain babe

u/mangothefoxxo Jul 24 '26
"luxury" and then it's cheaper to go on holiday than pay 1 month of car insurance or

It is, though you don't necessarily need the " at the end because it's assumed. 6"4 would mean six inches four ????s though.
(That said, I live in a country that uses feet and inches and I've also made this mistake.)
-1
u/retrosenescent Jul 24 '26
6'4 is barely above average height in some countries. It's not "very" anything
3
u/shelchang Jul 24 '26
Even if that were true, 6'4" is unarguably freakishly tall compared to the average height they seem to design economy class airline seats for.
