Politics & Governance Why have student protest engulfed Europe? Are students tired of their future being decided before they even become an adult?
45
u/Fluffy_Falcon92 2d ago
Must be fake for Austria, as student I am not aware of any organized wide protest. There was only one demo because of the cut of funding towards universities, but this was not that big or revolutionary.

I think most western ones are - "students". Students of illegalbordercrossology

Ppl who are downvoting are students who have protested and people who have eyes and dont believe far right Russian propaganda lol

u/YourBestDream4752 1d ago
Wouldn’t Russia want western countries to divert money meant to go to the military to the education system?
1
u/myFullNameWasTaken Serbia 13h ago
Then don't reduce military budget but introduce tax on capital gains targeted at education.
Another mr strawman.-2
u/Odd-Total-73 1d ago
yeah "far right russian propaganda" as if putin isn't sending his men to die in ukraine and bringing immigrants in to replace them. what world do u live in?

u/BornInvested 🇽🇰 🇦🇱 1d ago

Kosovo is having protests in support of Hashim Thaci, recently convicted of war crimes, but no student protests over corruption.

If Thaci was out, they probably would protest about corruption.

In Germany there’s a strike against the military service act like 50 thousand students have walked out across like 100 cities and in Austria i think it’s much smaller because of the head scarf ban for students under 14 it has caused multiple schools to protest and ofc Austrian students coming in solidarity
1
u/BornInvested 🇽🇰 🇦🇱 2d ago
That sounded Islamophobic i meant as in Austrian students who arent Muslim
11
u/fickogames123 Serbia 1d ago
I'd note all these have very different main goals. Serbia is against one ruling party, while Albania is mostly against corruption, meanwhile in France its just about school supplies.
8
u/_Pixelmancer 1d ago
I think you worded this wrong. It implies serbian protests are fueled by a political ideology, while in fact they are as anti corruption as it gets. The ruling party is not a political party, it operatsles like a crime syndicate

u/RedScarySpectre Portugal 1d ago
The goals might be different but the cause is the same. And that's the current economic system that tries to make everything a profit including basic rights such as education, health and housing.

u/RedScarySpectre Portugal 1d ago
Not students but for housing. This was Porto last night after the police brutaly assaulted a movement of people camping as a protests against the massive housing crisis in the country. So you can paint us RED too.

u/ImNotUpForThis007 1d ago
Personally I'd add Portugal as well due to this weeks latest events. I'd also point out that all of these countries have different goals for their protests, although they circle around similar issues, they're still different.
6
u/BornInvested 🇽🇰 🇦🇱 1d ago
Well ofc it’s all different countries but they are all being led by students of course different countries have different problems

u/purplesilver45 Greece 1d ago
As a greek, I dont want to feel unsafe getting into a train because there's no telemetry system and the government doesn't sustain the trails (because 57 people died from a train crash 2 years ago), I dont want to pay over half of my wage (if not my whole wage) on rent for a house 35 sqm which has a ton of problems but the landlord wants to profit from the house without fixing it. I want a livable minimum wage because the minimum wage here doesn't help you get through the month (and the people earning a "good" wage have said that right now the last week of the month is hard, imagine earning minimum). Idk is that too much to ask and am I so privileged?

u/Sapphire-Drake 1d ago
My guess is that there are multiple factors that contribute but to different extents across the countries.
1) Current political climate. In some places the students are against a specific ideology that is gaining power. Like Germany with the Afd. They need to act early to prevent history from repeating. Or they just grew sick of being pushed down.
2) Intellectual inclinations. These are students. People who are in higher education and thus a higher percentage of them will have critical thinking skills and a deeper knowledge of things. That or a predisposition towards looking at data rather than listening to random anecdotes from a coworker. And usually, the more you see of the bigger picture, the more pissed you get since you keep finding more and more ways the system is rigged.
3) Flashpoints and inspirations. In some places there was an event that kickstarted the protests. Like Serbia. In some they just boiled over after suddenly seeing that other people were also fighting for themselves for similar reasons. No one wants to be the first, but with social media bringing you closer to others it does give you some courage.
4) Futures, work and opportunities. If the job market is equally fucked everywhere, that means that young people aren't able to work and build a career. This means that they both aren't exhausted after a days work and that they have time to doomscroll about how fucked everything is. They can sit and wonder what will be left for them if things don't change.
5) Media and social connection. Young people don't watch TV but rather social media. They see regular people, people like them, complaining about the same problems. So old people are comfortable with their jobs and don't really have a wide connection with society, being tied mostly to their work place, family and some few friends. Young people on the other hand have a very very wide connection because of social media. It's super shallow, but it's enough to see that a lot of people like you have the same problems. Even posts like this one can reach thousands. And if you ask a thousand people if they would join the fight for a better future, chances are you'll find some who'll answer yes. If you post a CCTV video of a cop putting his service pistol to his ex's head and beating her in a restaurant, that's thousands of people seeing blatant corruption and abuse of powers

u/VladimirLogos 2d ago
Nobody wants to pay 80% of their paycheck on rent and be in debt all the time until retirement, basically. Which is why the elites will start another World War to avoid a global revolution.
3
5
u/oblivion_mike 2d ago
You simply cannot put any of those protests in the same basket. Not even if we randomly choose any two of them.
It’s not some sort of a sudden international event, emulating past ideologies
3
u/Sapphire-Drake 1d ago
The whole world is internationally going to shit so the people who will be stuck with cleaning it and suffering from it are getting pissed. There isn't any real shared goal but they are linked because one inspires another

1
u/corvidephiphany 1d ago
Students have historically been a huge factor in protests. 1968 of course, but they also played a role in other movements like 1848. They're a social group with a great ability to organize, free time, no dependents, and a strong interest in politics due to entering the job market. These are happening for specific reasons within the countries, but overall all of Europe is having issues with inequality, lack of jobs and disillusionment with the mainstream political class.

Simple, every country has it's problems, people were afraid and unwilling to do smth themselves, so when one group stepped up and made big enough noise, the rest quickly took to action.
No new happenings, just a cork unscrewed.

Social capital. These protest movements are how left wing parties recruit new members. Every left wing European politician has some photo of them at a protests when they were in some socialist youth organization

1
u/Gullible_Process6391 1d ago
15 year old activists grow up to become adult politicians. The current PM of Spain would go to state sponsored trips to Cuba while in highschool. These are the children of politicians , and they enter the family business early.

Kids need to vent somehow, so we let them destroy some of our cities so they have fun and at the same time understand that it is completely useless. It's also good for GDP.

Pride, and ungratefulness of the young west. Its a historic problem (I am a westerner myself, and a student) but whenever I see stuff like this I just think don’t you have enough already? I am tired of my generation especially in the privileged west constantly complaining about everything.
I always say its because they watch too many movies and have inherited the urge to constantly want to “rebel” against something so that they’re the good guys fighting the bad guys, like in the movies.

Technically, they're defending rights that would be luxuries to many people on the planet.
But they live in countries that have the wealth necessary to provide those things without issue. And they see that that wealth gets siphoned off at the very top.
You'd have to be extremely submissive to accept that.

Those "students" in France don't look French to me so it's entirely different from the Serbian one
2
u/BornInvested 🇽🇰 🇦🇱 1d ago
Well as someone that has been to à French school protest believe me it’s mostly white French students and you don’t have to be so racist ❤️
-1
u/gothfangsx 1d ago
Videos and photos of those "students" waving flags from north african countries beg to differ. Also French youth wouldn't be torching their own cities to improve their country. Take a look at Serbian students, just because I disagree with you that doesn't make me racist
2
u/BornInvested 🇽🇰 🇦🇱 1d ago
Why would they be waving à French flag 😭they’re against the state and pictures and photos Youve seen are clearly biased unless you think all 400k immigrant students in France decided to all protest at the same time that meaning you are retarded
1
u/gothfangsx 16h ago
You're asking me why would they wave a French flag in France? Real French wouldn't be burning down their cities, you're defending people who look like you so I'm not suprised

u/Select-You7784 2d ago
The EU and national governments are entirely to blame for their appalling immigration policies, which have led to a situation where virtually every video of "student" protests shows palestinian flags rather than the national flags of the countries where these protests are taking place.
Puzzin may be a piece of shit, but he wasn't the one who decided to let these people into those countries without considering the consequences.

u/BornInvested 🇽🇰 🇦🇱 1d ago
Lmao i never said that Russia had access to how Europe manages its borders i said theyre clearly trying to make it fascist from the clear propaganda and racism from European media’s conveniently supported and funded by the Russian government and i mean are you that blind did you not see the what happened in Russia

I dont wanna live like a slave of regime of Aleksandar Vučić, nor I want that life for my kids and grandchildren, they will pay off his debt and he just ruined Serbia with his corruption and people who has a purchased diploma, and again his regime killed 16 people in Novi Sad because of train station canopy fall... Students are winning, for better future.
