A friend from high school was a cave diver and diving instructor. Various cave diving sites have different suggested levels of certification to safely dive. On his last day, he and a friend were in a dive shop discussing the dive they were planning. Someone in the shop who knew him pointed out that neither he nor his friend had reached the level of certification for that cave. His last known words as he left the shop were something like, "There's no such thing as dive police."
Their bodies were recovered a few days later. He left a wife and two small children.

One of my great uncles (mom's dad's brother) was a bad alcoholic, and was the type to get really angry when he was drunk. One night he got into an argument with his wife over.. the furniture? He went out to the shed to get his chainsaw and just started chopping shit up. In the midst of his blind/drunken rage, the chainsaw bounced against something and went straight into his throat, nearly cut his head clean off
This happened long before I was born but my mom always told me about it as to why alcohol is dangerous and it's always stuck with me

I would think the chainsaw had a part to play as well. I use chainsaws occasionally, and I'm cautious as shit with them because I know how quickly it can go wrong. I won't even use one if I'm alone, just in case someone needs to call for an ambulance for me.

I had an accident once. I just barely swiped the tip of a chain saw, not running, across my thigh because I’m a moron. It cut through the skin and subcutaneous fat and left me staring at muscle tissue, a gash about 3 inches long, totally painless. I respect chainsaws a lot more now.

I had a fork lift injury like that. I walked past a parked and stationary forklift, and just happened to brush my calf against a tiny metal corner that wasn't even supposed to be sharp.
And that tiny corner just unzipped about three inches of skin and muscle like it was a party trick. It didn't bleed, and didn't even hurt at all until the ER doctor started stitching me up before the local anesthetic took hold.
I can't imagine the damage it could have done if that tiny metal corner had been the size of a chainsaw tooth.

Doctors son, typical rich kid. He got a brand new high performance car for his 16th birthday. He was a menace. Burning rubber around the school parking lot. Kids that were his friends even refused to ride with him. That was how reckless he was. Wrapped the car around an oak tree driving to school one day. Had the car maybe six months. Thankfully he only killed himself.

When I managed a security company I got this young dude with very rich parents who were insisting that he had to work a job so I stuck him on mobile patrol, where the cars all had gps and would give me automated calls if a guard was speeding.
So I got about 150 calls the first night and he stopped answering his phone after the first few times I asked him to stop speeding. By morning I got a call from a nice RCMP lady who had pulled him over in the company vehicle going 3 times the speed limit in a residential area who let me take the vehicle back while they took his license away (obviously fired).
I ask him what his big issue was and he said “I physically have to speed when I’m in a car”. So anyways a few months later he killed himself in a car accident and the world got slightly safer.

There was a Monty Pythoneque situation in Australia about 20 or so years ago.
An Asian family (China?) on holidays in Australia went swimming on a beach with a rip and the mother of the family was swept out to sea. Search and Rescue boats and helicopters went looking and couldn't find her.
After a few days, the rest of the family accepted that they had lost their mother, and so had a memorial service on the beach.
Guess what washed up nearby during the service?

I work in cancer care, and the answer is always "I've decided to go an alternate route."
We can't stop them. But that alternative route always ends one of two ways. We receive a notice that they've died, or they come back and instead of stage 1 or 2 (highly treatable for most cancers), they are now stage 4 with metastases with limited options and possibly only palliative or hospice options.
Recently had a patient I liked who disappeared for a couple years because she was "going to try holistic instead." She came back when she was in terrible pain. The previously easy to treat cancer had spread to her bones, causing fractures, and just... everywhere else. All we could offer was palliative. She died a few months later.

Within two weeks of each other, a HS friend of mine's mom and mine were both diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Her mom did chemotherapy a single round and decided she hated it and would go the holistic route. My mom decided she would do anything it took to be around her babies for as long as possible.
Her mom died 2-3 months later in horrible pain and very ill. My mom beat cancer and is in our living room right now, free of cancer for the last ten years. Their first chemo therapy rounds started the same day. I don't think I'll ever, ever be able to talk to that friend the same way again-- it wasn't her fault, she did everything she could to try and get her mom to undergo treatment. But my mom lived, and hers didn't. And I know that hurts her. Orphaned at 22 with other relatives will hurt no matter what you do.→ More replies (12)197

"Mr. Jobs, please, let us treat it now while we can"
"Nope, juice. maybe accupuncture. I'll go vegan and think really hard"
"Mr Jobs, you're back. it's been 9 months. Let's see... oh, this is not good"
"Juice doesn't seem to be working, so do your treatment thing"
"Oh, Mr. Jobs, that was 9 months ago. We'll do what we can, but you turned a 95% chance of success into 5%"

You left out the part where he used his wealth to hop state lines and basically cut in line to get a new liver, that only lasted two and a half years. He basically stole a liver from someone else on the transplant list to buy a few more years, he really was a bastard.
660
u/Neuroccountant 20h ago
And he needed a new liver because that was where his pancreatic cancer had metastasized! Oncologists would never recommend a liver transplant in these circumstances, because there is essentially a zero percent chance that there is only one distant metastasis, so at best the patient would be buying a little bit of time, much less time than another recipient of the liver would receive. Just incredibly selfish all around.

On top of that, an organ transplant requires taking immuno-suppressive drugs to prevent organ rejection. This meant Steve Jobs suppressed his own immune system from being able to kill cancer cells, causing his cancer to grow even faster.
At any rate, the whole episode led to a grim joke: "It was the only time PC (pancreatic cancer) defeated Apple."

I knew a guy who refused to get medical attention for a year for his giant testicle. He had testicular cancer ofc and by the time an ex girlfriend cajoled him into going to the hospital it was too late. He was one of the 7% of people who get that and don’t survive it. At the end ofc he was pretty optimistic about the mushroom tea he was taking, and would tell anyone who would listen that metastasis just meant the cancer was no longer trapped in the original tissue so the immune system would deal with it.

I just posted this as a parent comment but I figured you’d be interested, as it’s similar to the stories you’ve seen.
I knew a woman who was a friend of my cousin, I met her a few times, really nice person. And I’m not posting this to mock her, it’s just really fucking sad.
She got diagnosed with breast cancer, Stage 2 I think. The oncologist was confident that with surgery and chemo it would be treatable. She had two young kids and was about 14 weeks pregnant with the 3rd. They made the difficult decision to end that very wanted pregnancy so that she could have the chemo.
Not long after that, some fucking woo woo peddler told her that he could treat her cancer with herbs, costing thousands of dollars. She decided not to get any proper treatment at all. Her poor husband begged her to see reason, but she refused to listen. Not surprisingly she passed away, leaving a devastated husband behind with two young kids to navigate grief with. But last I heard he remarried, he and the kids are going as well as they can be.
That’s one reason why I hate that woo woo natural and anti-vax bullshit. She should still be here, or at least had a lot more time with her family. What I think is dumb here is that this shit is still going on in 2026 and people are still dying because of it. She died around 2008 I think, I didn’t find out until later. It must really pain her husband to know that nothing much has changed.

There was a whole thing with Austrian wine in 1985 where people were getting sick because the vintners, to save money, were putting diethylene glycol - a major ingredient in antifreeze - in their cheaper brands to make them taste sweeter and more full bodied. Part of what uncovered it was one vintner tried to claim a tax write-off for a huge shipment of the chemical...

The interesting thing is that IV ethanol is the treatment for antifreeze poisoning. (There's an actual medication for this now for humans, but for animals ethanol is often still the fix!) The ethylene glycol itself is fine, but it's what our bodies do with it that's the problem. The enzyme that breaks it down (alcohol dehydrogenase, or ADH) converts it to acids that wreak havoc on your everything. But ADH more readily bonds to the ethanol and basically it gets "distracted" which gives the body time to get rid of the ethylene glycol (or time for hemodialysis to get rid of it for you).
Additional fun fact: same thing goes for methanol poisoning!

That's real. Life changes all of us, and reveals many things about ourselves and others that we might rather not actually know.
We're human. Hardwired dangerous. We get to choose how to change and grow. With intention, will, courage and behavior, we get to behave in the manner of our own choosing.
Sounds simple, and maybe it is, but it's powerful stuff - and not at all the modern human default behavior.
Seems to me like most folks just drift around like jellyfish in a current, going to and doing what they believe is expected of them, and not rocking the boat unless absolutely necessary.
But we get to decide to act otherwise, if we want it. And every tiny little thing changes us some.
Food for thought. Perspective from an older introspective guy.

Actually, you often can't hear a train coming toward you on the tracks. It's why you really shouldn't walk on tracks for an extended period of time without paying attention.
Something about an air vortex buildup in front of the train stops the normal vibrations that make up sound.

One of the kids decided to lie down on his stomach right near the tracks to feel it go by (I think this was something a bunch of them were doing), but at some point he decided to stand up and was hit by the edge of something on the side of the train and killed. He was only 7 or 8 years old.

I have two:
First was a guy who loved to decorate elaborately for Christmas. He was hanging decorations in his bathroom and stood on the toilet. Somehow he slipped off, hit his head on the sink and died.
Second was a former client. He was a white collar guy with a vacation home in a rural part of Michigan. He went up there alone to have focused quite time. There was a big storm and a tree fell across his driveway. This was a long driveway surrounded by forest off the main road. He decides he can use a chainsaw and chop up the tree because he was expecting a FedEx delivery later that day and for whatever reason wanted the delivery to make it all the way up to the house.
He had no business trying to use a chainsaw but he fired it up. The rest is speculation because there was no witness. But what we think happened was he was trying to cut up the fallen tree and the chainsaw kicked back and decapitated him. Right there in the driveway. FedEx driver found him a couple hours afterwards. I’ve always thought about that damn FedEx guy coming upon that scene…

He stole some guns and sporting equipment, then tripped on the steps on the way out and stabbed himself in the stomach with an arrow. He pulled out the arrow and made it back to his pickup truck, but bled out a half-mile from the house he'd robbed.

That “I’m gonna treat myself for being clean” hit kills a LOT of people, because even if it’s not laced they very quickly want to move back up to their previous dose and their body doesn’t have the tolerance built back up yet

Never actually met the guy, but he was my sister in law's ex husband. He went out drinking with his new wife. He was too drunk to drive so she drove them home. He was passed out and too drunk for her to get him out of the car so she left him there and went inside. She fell asleep (I think she was pretty drunk, too). He froze to death.

There was a rig that the fellows at work were using to kill dew worms in their lawn. Two wires stuck in the ground a few feet a part. The other end to a 12 volt battery. They decided to make so it hooked in to a 110 plug and supercharge this worm killer. One guy went to move it and forgot to unplug it first. Knocked him to the ground and one of the wire ends landed on his chest and anyhoo he was a goner.

A lot of people have MRSA as their normal skin flora. 25-50% of all people have S. Aureus, and some of these people have bacteria that is inherently resistant to antibiotics. This particular person most likely had MRSA on their skin, scratched their nose and caused a staph infection that way.

A friend of a friend was “cleaning” his gun and mentioned his trigger was much lighter than his wife’s. The jackass didn’t clear the gun before pointing it out in front of him to demonstrate. His wife started reading him the riot act at a volume I did not know to be humanly possible before the sound stopped echoing through the house.

I remember reading accounts of nurses and doctors during the pandemic. It was shocking what our healthcare workers were subjected to. The psychological trauma of knowing the family of a dying loved one is downstairs arguing with staff over wearing a mask in a hospital when the guy just wanted to see his wife and children before he succumbed to covid. Mind you, these dying patients adamantly denied covid as a democratic hoax, and begged for the vaccine with their lasts gasps of air, while (again) their family is raising hell over having to wear a mask.
I don't feel sorry for them. I pity them and their stubbornness, but I don't feel sorry for them. I feel sorry for the children and the healthcare workers.
I think I read most of those stories on r/HermanCainAward

In an Infectious disease office.
When he told me "don't bend the knee" on the way out of the office I wanted to reply with "dude, you don't know what I GOT!"
I did not say that, I stayed silent, the desk staff handled it wonderfully.
Fortunately what I had was not considered transmissable person to person. Still had a nice rusty stain on my mask after wearing it from the bloody mist I was exhaling with each breath.

She would continuously insert herself into the middle of any argument or disagreement and fan the flames wildly. She moved 2 states away and was killed in a drive-by by local gang members because of some drama at work she involved herself in.
Edit to add another I just thought of that u/future_speedbump made me think of. A manager at another store in our district told an employee trying to call out with COVID that she had to come to work. Anyway, it was raining, around 6am and I'm doing my morning round. The rain was forcing my awesome hair into my eyes and I swooshed my beautiful locks aside with an energetic swish of my head. Very reminiscent of a shampoo advert.
The swish was so awesome, and the aforementioned rain was so rather wet, I lost balance of my bike and crashed to the ground, breaking my arm.

One of my first friends I made in elementary school died that way (same as Bob Sager as well). We lost touch for about twenty years before reconnecting on Facebook and within a year he slipped on his bathroom floor, hit his head on something, tried to clean up the blood and put a bandage on it. At some point he lost consciousness and died. His mom found him when he didn't reply back to her morning message about dropping his daughter off at school for him. Absolutely devastating for the family because his older sister had died a few years earlier from a genetic disorder.

My grandmother was a toxic beast. Just, truly a horrible woman. My therapist uses cult deprogramming methods on me because growing up with her as Matriarch of the family was hella culty.
Well, after my mom died (her doormat, Mom spent her whole life trying to get some kind of love from that wire mother of a woman) she expected me to fall into line as replacement. Unfortunately, I had started realizing I hated the kind of woman she was years before but I was a Good Daughter(tm) and didn't let anything show. I figured I'd drift away, but then she robbed our house during Mom's funeral and I got ugly.
Ended with her demanding everyone in the family choose, her or me. Most chose her.
You'd think that would mean she'd have plenty of family support as she grew older and frail, right?
Nope. She always favored her youngest son (who was a life long fuck up, but was as much a parasite as her so I guess that was what it took to get love from the woman) and managed to push away anyone with a touch of decency.
And then she had a stroke. And her Beloved Son... just kinda let her rot in a back bedroom. Didn't feed her regularly, and I'm told the state of the mattress she spent months motionless on was "unbelievable". I didn't ask for details.
Eventually something got him to put her in a nursing home (not sure the details) where she still was unable to feed herself, but Beloved Son refused to let them give her a feeding tube or even a hydration IV. Apparently the staff didn't care, so she slowly starved to death there. Hopefully somewhat cleaner than she was on the Mattress Beyond Belief? But it was a horrible way to go and she didn't go quickly. Took her six months since some nursing assistants were like, spoon feeding her water and Pedialyte.
The dumb part? If I'd known, I absolutely would have done right by her. Not out of love for her (my emotions towards her are... complicated. I don't know if I "hate" her, I might even have loved her a little. But I couldn't let her go that way if I'd known. I would've had APS on him faster than he could spit dip in my sodas when I was a kid.
The cousins who chose my side in the feud? They would've done something too. Same reasons, not because she was good but because she was human and we aren't monsters who would let a disabled old woman be in that state.
But she'd pushed away everyone who was empathetic or kind. And when she was weak and needed care, the son she did EVERYTHING for, from lying to courts to prevent him from receiving full punishment of his crimes, to blackmailing aquaintances into giving him a job, to finding someone to raise his kids so social services didn't realize how much of a fuck up her was... Just let her rot. Couldn't be bothered to feed her, clean her or do anything at all.
I feel like that's pretty fuckin dumb, yeah?

An old timer I knew used to hang out at his little coffee klatch group everyday. It was at a volunteer center that had a lot of people in and out all day, and he and a few of the old guys would sit in the kitchen all day and drink coffee. One day he flips his shit that someone was drinking his creamer. This is again, a very popular volunteer center that has many members in and out each day, and the vollunteer center provides coffee and creamer, maybe someone thought it was for anyone, it could have been anyone that used his creamer. He accused one of his coffee buddies and like got in his face, and really went off.
Anyway. He grabs the rest of his creamer, storms out, goes home, falls down the stairs, breaks his hip, found basically upside down on the stairs, covered in creamer, and is dead in days.
Really surprised me, he was a man of the cloth and had like baptized a bunch of my cousins and their kids.
Like, man, coffee creamer is pretty cheap. What are you doing????

If he was old he might have started experiencing dementia and no one really noticed. Some first noticeable dementia/brain injury symptoms are changes in personality. About 10% risk aged over 80 and jumps to about 40% over age 90! It can also develop faster in people who have untreated hearing loss.

Kid in high school I knew got partially paralyzed when ejected from his car driving stupid with no seat belt. Worked on physical therapy and whatnot for a while, dad bought him a new SUV converted for him to drive it while still partially paralyzed. Drove stupid again with no seat belt and ejected again when he crashed, but that time he died.
