What is a sign you're in a bad neighborhood?
1.7k
u/InertEyes 21h ago
Many check cashing places.
Many liquor stores.
Grown men on child bicycles.
You see the same men on the street all day every day

If you see grown men on child bicycles you almost always also see them awake between 2 and 5am with flashlights going through trash or tinkering with said bikes

I was in Houston for first time ever. We are a block away from where we are staying and I look out the car window and say to friends "I love seeing a rent a center, pawn shop, and boost mobile all in the same plaza.
There was a random mattress on the corner of the street we stayed on too

I come from a place like that. Sometimes you'll see different dudes riding the same bike from day to day. Sometimes with another bike over their shoulder. Bicycle chop shops are big around here. With that comes a lot of rattle can paint theft at hardware and auto stores.

They lost their license to drive due to dui/ car is gone due to accidents, or sold for drugs, so they can only get around on a bike. Not sure why itâs usually a little bike though. Maybe they stole it from a kid.

When I was in 5th grade my bike was stolen from right in front of me on the school yard. Was 20 feet away from it playing basketball when some dude ran around the corner out of nowhere and hopped on it and rode away. Stole my first bmx bike:(
Certainly left a bad taste in my mouth. As an adult now I can't imagine doing that to a kid.

That sounds creepy!! I guess I have always lived in the better parts of the Vegas Valley for 20 years. I have never noticed that. I have seen houses with a couple maybe older dudes in their middle years would be hanging out in lawn chairs in shitty trashy yards.
For real sounds creepy!

An older guy pointed this out to me when I was a kid in one of Americaâs more notorious hoods that was and is just a straight up drug zone. He said look at all those guys on the street theyâre not your age, theyâre more like your dadâs age. What do you think theyâre all just standing on a corner in the middle of the afternoon for? Just hanging out by every other stop sign for fun?
That question opened my eyes as a kid lol. I knew the answer, I just hadnât thought about it that way. To this day I think dudes just hanging by the corners and every convenience store is the one reliable sign youâre in a rough ass neighborhood. Some are a lot more dangerous than others though. Thereâs a difference between a down and out neighborhood with mostly just relatively chill unemployed people hangin out and a neighborhood that turns into a goddamn Walmart of sex and drugs for sale.
→ More replies (1)12
u/SoftServeMonk 5h ago
Okay so why do they hang out by convenience stores? I pass a liquor store in the South Side of Chicago often and a group of mostly men are always posted up by it, and sometimes on lawn chairs. A lot of cars drive through and pause and talk to them, and I thought it might be drugs but I wasnât sure. Am I just super naive? It would make sense why they always stare at me like âwho is this little white woman and why is she here?â Hahaha

I was in a sketchy area of San Juan, PR driving down a one-lane road through a neighborhood where dudes were doing exactly that; hanging out listening to music and drinking during a weekday. Another car started coming towards me so I slowed, and immediately these guys got up and surrounded my car. Now Iâm from Detroit so I already clocked them before they got up and was already looking for the best way to escape the situation.Â
Right as I popped it into reverse, they yelled at me in Spanish, folded my car windows in, and guided me so me and the other car could pass each other on the one lane road. Then sat back down and started drinking again. I had to explain to my travelling partner that was usually a bad sign in a neighborhood like that.
47
u/TightInvestment330 13h ago
I wouldâve been scared too, especially when they all got up at once. The fact that they were actually just helping makes it even crazier.

Job took me all around the country and Iâve been to Compton and South Chicago, and never felt it was that bad. But I parked my car once on the side of the street to take a work call in Niagara Falls, NY and noticed all of these for the first time together and had to get back on the road and join the call later from a few miles down the road.

Chris Rock said in a recent special that you can tell by who is not working:
âIf youâre in any neighborhood in America, at 12:15 in the afternoon on a Wednesday, and you see women with sweatpants on coming out the gym, pushing babies, riding bikes, having brunch, going to SoulCycle, chances are youâre in a nice neighborhood.
If youâre in any neighborhood in America, at 12:15 in the afternoon on a Wednesday, and you see men in sweatpants, smoking cigarettes, hanging with their boys, lifting weights in the yard, riding childrenâs bicycles as their actual transportation, then you are in danger.â

Very little care given to landscaping, etc. Cars are left to rot.
Iâve been in poor but safe neighborhoods. You can tell, because the cars are older, but well-maintained. Yards are maintained and not kept wild. Sidewalks and driveways might have a few cracks, but they are clean.

u/Fuck_it_ 19h ago edited 17h ago
This is very true. I lifeguarded in a town with a wide variety of income. You could tell the neighborhood, and more specifically the street/house based on exactly this. Newer high school pool with lots of big fancy houses? Nice. You'll have a lot of snotty kids who buy a lot of the expensive candy bars. Community pool with big weeds across the street and random guys prowl those houses? There will be some fights there. You might have to call the police. Usually the kids just want to swim and actually listen better than the rich neighborhoods (except for that one group of kids. If you lifeguarded, you know).
12
u/RumHamComesback 6h ago
"Respect" is a huge thing amongst those people because it's one of the few things they have in life. Parents in rough neighborhoods (that don't get into shady shit) try to instill that in their kids hence the listening.

Back in the 1990s I went to my grandfatherâs old neighborhood in Newark New Jersey. My great aunt insisted we walk down the street to a place called Dicky Dâs.

My therapist had a hard time understanding why I didn't have a coffee shop to have therapy while I was doing online therapy.
I swear to you, there are like two bakeries on my neighbourhood and the rest are houses and bars.
Every food and drink place is a bar. There are not even restaurants unless it's a small fast food place.
13
u/octobereighth 11h ago
Not really the point of this thread I know, but did your therapist really expect you to have your sessions in public at a coffee shop? I close the door to my bedroom during online therapy when I'm home alone, lol. I've done it in my (parked) car a couple of times and felt super self-conscious. I couldn't imagine doing anything productive with a therapist in public.
