I'm 34m. And I very anxiously await the fact that in 4 months I will be at 50% of my life's average expectancy. And that scares the living shit out of me. I still feel 26. And I just know that fear will be amplified at 40-45-50
I’m 51 and it is very wild to think I’m much closer to death than birth.
I bought a car recently and bought a ten year manufacturer warranty so I have it until I’m 61. I expect I’ll do that one more time. Morbid I know, and it was a real thought I couldn’t shake.
What’s interesting to me is how much I’ve calmed down and the death part doesn’t scare me. I’m just more content with me and my life now.
The only thing that saddens me is I think of my kids and future grandkids (who don’t exist yet). I kind of feel like you’re reading a book where you won’t get to experience how it will end.
So you do what you can to help them increase their odds for a happy ending.
If it makes you feel any better, having made it to 34 means you have a really good chance of making it past the life expectancy. Alot of men die in their 20s because of accidents, suicide, etc and that really pulls down the average life expectancy.
Just continue living your life like you’re doing right now. I just reached 36 while being healthy (as far as I know) and I just ignore the number and do the same things as 10 years ago. Even though being a dad made me feel much older lol
That feeling of looking at the math and realizing the clock is moving faster than your mind is one of the most terrifying things in the world. Feeling like you are still 26 inside while the calendar keeps marching forward is a total mindfuck.
It is completely normal for that fear to feel heavy right now, because 34 is right around the corner from where the reality of aging starts sinking its teeth in. But the truth is that internal sense of being yourself never really catches up to the number on the page. You just learn how to carry it better, and those later years do not hit the way you think they will when you are standing here looking at them from the ledge.
What keeps me straight is remembering us humans decided to measure age by counting 365 days at a time and I can just decide to count bi yearly and thus I'm 17 and I'll just pretend that's allg 🙃
Meh, the older you get, if you’re mentally healthy, you’ll loosen your grip on life. Very slowly, very gently, it just happens as naturally as breathing. Don’t worry about it.
Don’t worry about it too much. Actually your adult life is still very long. You have only had 16 years sind you’re 18. So there’s much more to come and it’s not like you’re geriatric at 50. I can recommend starting being physically more active though. The sooner the better.
I’m 61 and not afraid of a damned thing. In best shape of my life and understand now that we need to make every day matter. Live your life with joy and thunder (the great R.E.M.)
Fuck all that. I’m 49 tomorrow and have lived an amazing life. Not rich or famous or anything stupid, but seen more shit than majority of people. Have had amazing experiences and truthfully I’m ready to go.
Now I just live for today. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and I’m at peace with the fact that my time is on the short end.
My advice- start living your best life. Don’t want to be on your death bed thinking about all the things you wish you did. Do them.
